Do you recognize (Washington-Baltimore area) ? #general

The photo was taken in February 1982 in Rockville, MD when Itzkhak KAMINSKY
of Israel (second >from the right) visited Abram VIZHANSKY ((standing). The
assumption is that the two unidentified couples, who are most likely
deceased by now, lived in the metro Washington-Baltimore area.

A note to KAMINSKY researchers. This was not Itzkhak's birth name. He assumed the
name in the 1950's to facilitate the escape >from the Soviet Union although he
lived under this name for the rest of his life. So, this is not a lead for you,
sorry.

Emigration path from the Cherkassy region #ukraine

Felissa Lashley

I am trying to find out what the typical path to the U.S. would have
entailed for immigrants in the early 1900s >from the Cherkassy area of
the Ukraine. How might they have travelled >from their village to a
port? If they went first to Great Britain and then to the U.S. how did
they know where to stay? When they arrived at Ellis Island or Boston
was there a network of help for these immigrants? What did travel by
steerage mean? What were sleeping arrangements? Would appreciate any
help in understanding the brave journey of my ancetors.

Thank you for any insights.

German archives notice, posted to Jewishgen circa Jan 2019 #general

Mel Comisarow

The search engine for the Jewishgen Main Discussion Group is not working
for postings after November 2018. Circa January 2019 there was a
Jewishgen posting regarding a German archive of Holocaust material that
had just become available. As I recall the archive was in Berlin. Does
anyone recall the website for this archive? Thank you.

Survindt(a), Latvia? #general

Charles Yaker <cyaker@...>

Hello

According to the town database the above town doesn't exist and probably never did.
None the less my mother wrote it on her citizenship application.

The closest name is Sesouliui which interestingly is where my Grandmother did come
from and is close to Vokimeer now Ukmerge the town my my mother always told us she
came from. Sesouliui and Ukmerge aren't that close to Latvian border.

I can understand my mother making a mistake when she applied in 1944 as she was 4
when she arrived in 1913 but what I don't understand is the US government accepting
her application with an obvious mistake or was there a Survindt in Latvia in 1903
when she was born?

There was another error which seems to have escaped whoever approved her
application as she said she had sailed >from Belgium when actually the ship (which
she got correct as I have copy of manifest) sailed >from Glasgow. Her aunt who came
latter that year did sail on a different ship that came >from Antwerp. I can
understand my mother's error but not the Governments.

Thank You
Charles Yaker

My first trip to Ukraine, the birthplace of my paternal grandfather, was
over 20 years ago. I have written about and lectured to genealogists many
times about my travel there in 1997 with my family, and then again in 1999
as a JewishGen Shtetlshlepper Group Leader.

As owner of the KehilaLinks website about Lyubar, I have shared my
experiences as well as information about retrieving documents and about the
history of the Jews of Lyubar, Ukraine where my KARGER and SHINDELMAN family
lived for at least 150 years.

In an extraordinary turn of events, material and photos >from the Lyubar
website < https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/Lyubar/ > is being used by a
German-government funded group called "The Protecting Memory Project" to
erect a memorial on two mass gravesites in Lyubar where relatives were
murdered in 1941. I have been invited to speak at the Opening Ceremony in
Lyubar, Ukraine on June 20, 2019.

If interested, you are invited to follow my travel journal on Tripcast which
will contain photos, videos, and notes about my trip back to 'Ukraine in
