Re: Lost Grandmother with family name of J(Y)erukamovitz #names #unitedkingdom

Dr.Josef ASH

Stephen,
by the suffix of the name, -ovich, I'm sure is comes from Russia
This suffix is translated as "son of": Ivanovich - s/o Ivan, Abramovich - s/o Abram, Yerukamovich - s/o Yerukam (by the way Yeroham  is the name from the Bible). I think in other Slavic languages it sounds a little different.
More: are you sure it is the surname? For Russian it is too long, it is prefered be, as a surname, just Yeruhamov.

I have just stumbled upon a website called Jewish Roots which is a Russian website. Is anyone familiar with this website and have they used it? If so, any guidance in using it.

FamilySearch uses volunteer indexers and a two level system.  The same data is indexed by two different people.  The two results are compared, word  by word.  Any difference is highlighted and a third person takes another look before making the final decision. FamilySearch volunteers come from many parts of the world.  They can choose what records to index and are likely to select records where they have the most familiarity.  (I have  done some indexing for FamilySearch)
I believe Ancestry employs paid indexers, many from outside the U.S.A.  I don't believe their indexing is subject to the same level of scrutiny as FamilySearch

I'm looking for info about my grandfather's Ukraine family. Naftola Marantz was Born in Odessa in 1872. Father was Schea Joshua Marantz.  He was from a large family but can't find any records. Had cousin, Morris Katz,  who moved to South America around 1905.  Moved to Vienna at young age. Eventually married Rebecca (Bena) Steele who was born in Kiev. They emigrated first to London around 1895 and then to New Jersey, U.S. around 1906. Changed name to Marans around 1920.

One reason may be the indexer misread the entry. Try to find others on the same pa
via Ancestry and you may also find your relative. Each service seems to use
their own indexers.

My grandparents were miss indexed in the 1930 US census, but my 3 year
old father was listed with the correct name but at a strangers home.

He was recorded as grandson of the HOF.

Using Googleearth I found the address, and saw that Heggaman Ave was
a cross street, I know the family lived there and searched house by
house until I found the entry. The small "u" was indexed as an "a".

Does anyone have Volume II of the 3rd edition of The Unbroken Chain? #rabbinic

Ted Gostin

I'm trying to find a copy of Volume II of the 3rd edition (currently in publication) of Neil Rosenstein's The Unbroken Chain.  Unfortunately, all libraries in my area are still closed, and so I can't review it at any library.  I don't want to spend $100 on one volume of a multi-volume work just to review a couple of pages.  The indexes of the current volumes show that Volume II has the family I am interested in.

If anyone has a copy of this book and would be willing to check something for me, please contact me off-list.  I need to compare 2-3 ages to see how the description of a particular family compares to the description of that same family from the 1st edition published back in 1976.

Thanks.

If you go through the Jewish Journal link to Holy Silence it works. I was the original poster and posted before I tried the direct link, but was able to watch the film going through the JJ link without a problem. You do have to do the free register click all the necessary buttons- its free and it takes you to the Jewish Film Institute order form then click to watch.  Remember it is only available to August 22 and there is a Zoom Panel Discussion 8/20 at 5:30pm PST co-hosted by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM).  I have no affiliation with the video but it well worth the machinations to get to see it.

Isaac LAZAROFF-Turn of the cent. London/Ct.USA/Jerusalem-1900 approx #unitedkingdom #usa #israel

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Family rumour has it that my great great grandmother, Gittle
ABRAMOWITZ married (second marriage for both) a British widower by the
name of Isaac LAZAROFF (spelling ? no records). This LAZAROFF was
supposedly "wealthy" (in Jerusalem turn of the century life style) and
had some ther heren children from his late wife. She may have been
financially "comfortable" as she was supposedly a silversmith in Ct.
and seems to have travelled back and forth between Ct. and Jerusalem
to visit her son Mayer ABRAMOWITZ ( my great grandfather) whom she had
sent there after she came to New Haven.

Eventually the above Isaac and my ancestress lived in the "fancy" new
religious neighborhood , "Mea Shearim" in Jerusalem.

As this is strictly family lore it is combined with other family
stories such as that Gittle left Novarodok, as a widow with 4 orphans
around 1880-1890 to Ct., USA, via Liverpool and supposedly married a
gentleman she met in Liverpool either in England or Ct.

I have a very strong reason that Gittle may have been a HOROWITZ from
birth in Novarodok as there many connections with the Novarodok
HOROWITZs who emigrated to Ct. around the turn of the cent. and
another branch who emigrated to Petach Tikva (Israel) around the same
time.

As all the above is based on family lore without records I would
appreciate hearing from anyone knowing about the above.

TIA

Yoni Ben-Ari, Jerusalem

Dear Barry,
I think it's of great interest to those who are interested in the origins of the Hope Place Synagogue and the people involved in it at the time.  Not sure it gives a big insight into the life of the local Jewish community at that time.  There are photographs also, but not particularly good quality, as the book is old.    I don't mind scanning some and the index and sending them to you if you give me your email address.

I would also go for Jurbarkas / Yurberg or Yurburg.

It's circumstantial, but supportive, that her husband's birthplace is given as "Shellel".  Šilalė, the Yiddish for which JG TownFinder gives as Shilel, is only some 70km distant.

The Naturalization papers for both Jacob and Molly Novick can be found on Ancestry.com.  Both say that home town is Ekatrainslav,  (Ekatrinoslav) Russia.
Today is Dnipro in Ukraine.  Nothing like what is on the passenger list.

You might want to try enhancing the image at https://www.myheritage.com/photo-enhancer. I think it is free for non-paying members, up to 5 images. I have found it really helps
