Galician families WW2 #galicia

Beata Kalinska

I am researching deportations (and fate of deportees) >from Galicia
during WW2 and often come across Jewish names. These might have
relevance for someone who is searching for family history.

Going through the listings of Anders Army soldiers who died during
the period the army was being consolidated and are buried in USSR,
I have come across, so far:

BELIC Abram age 24 buried at Tockoje

BIEGIELAIZEN Jakub age 30 buried at Tockoje

BLOCH Szepsel age 35 buried at Tockoje

CYNDLER Julim age 48 buried at Buzuluk

RAJCHENBACH Szulim age ? buried at Koltubanka

If this is of any use to anyone I will update this list as names
come up. I hope someone can make a connection.

PENN Genealogy #general

Arnon Hershkovitz <arnonh@...>

Hello, Dear Colleagus!

While trying to help a friend with a family mystery, I'm trying to trace the
paternal ancestors of the director Arthur PENN (b. 1923, PA) and his brother
photographer, Irving PENN (b. 1917, NY).

Their father was Harry PENN (divorced >from his wife, Sonia nee GREENBERG) c.
1926, and died in the 1940s, probably in New York, NY. I've found Sonia as
the head of the family in 1930 US Federal Census, but didn't find the family
in 1920 census.

I'm trying to find information about Harry's ancestors and particularly
information about his possible connection to the famous Hebrew poet
Alexander PENN.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Yours,
Arnon Hershkvoitz, Israel

Re: Japanese ancestor in Shavli (possibly SCHUTZ or SACKS) #lithuania

Jules Levin

The possibility of a Japanese ancestor is remote, but could be true as there
were always converts and there were always traders or merchants.
But there were not "always" Japanese traders, since Japan practiced
official isolation, and if the occasional Japanese somehow found himself
on the Asian mainland, it is hard to imagine a scenario that would bring
him to a commercial backwater like 19th Century Lithuania.

See my recent message on the many closer sources for
"Oriental" eyes, including >from Estonia or Finland

the Siauliai Ausros Museum has the largest collection of classical
Japanese ukijo-e prints >from the Eda Period in
Lithuania. This may indicate a connection to the presence of the
Japanese in Siauliai.
I did go to this site. The museum was founded in 1923. The Eda
prints were doubtless collected by local merchants who donated them
to the museum. More importantly, I discovered something of possible
interest to Litvaks: The museum has come to own a mansion built by one
Chaimas Frenkelis and his son Jacob in 1908. Apparently after renovations,
ALL the museum's collection will be housed in the Frenkels' former
mansion. Any Frenkel/Frankel heirs on this list?

Raja ORLIN found on Holocaust Survival Lists #lithuania

Steve Orlen

Dear Cousins,

On the Lithuanian Holocaust Survivers Lists (1946), I found the name
Raja ORLIN, >from Kaunas, with the notation "Found in Italy." My first
two questions: how do I find the original reference, &, equally
important, might there be more information included? My third: I
couldn't find the given name "Raja" on the Given Name Database. I
know it's a Sanskrit word, but does anyone recognize it as a Jewish
given name, or might it be a misspelling?

Best, Steve Orlen

LitvakSIG VRT Project Update - Vilna County 2nd okrug [court district] birth record translations #lithuania

Joel Ratner

The first translations of the Vilna County records have been received. In
particular, the birth records for the 2nd okrug [court district] have been
translated so far and will be followed by the 3rd okrug births. I have
prepared a set of surname frequency lists for each of the 10 towns
represented in the translations.

These lists are contained in a file accessible >from the GoogleGroups
JewishVilna group which Eden Joachim and I co-coordinate. I am distributing
this limited data to Vilna researchers in the hope those of you who have been
unable to find records for your family in Vilna proper may come to find
ancestors elsewhere in the Vilna County.

The raw translations are being proofed and will be distributed to the $100
donors for the Vilna County, as well as Moletai and Shirvint donors who
funded most of this work.

These translations represent the first surname data to appear for many of
the towns. I look forward to some discussion of this data. Specifically, we
would like to hear >from researchers who have found their surnames of
interest among these records.

Please contact me if you are a Vilna researcher interested in this data.

"You can find photos of many buildings in Israel at http://zoomap.co.il/
but you need to be able to enter the address in Hebrew characters."

I used "English" characters and had no problem going through the site. (It
helps to read Hebrew, but if not, having the assistance of a Hebrew reader
would suffice.) Thanks for the site information!
