Origin of surname MALUS/MALES
#general
Tsiporah Trom
I'm researching the possible meaning of the surname MALUS/MALES.
For now, I came up with two possible meanings: - It derives >from the woman's given name Mali, as a possible ancestor. - It derives >from the Polish word "maluszke" or Russian word "maluchik", meaning "little boy" or "someone of small size". I do not have access to Alexander Beider's work. So I would gladly hear your thoughts on this. Thank you in advance for your help. Geraldine Trom Antwerp, Belgium

ROLNICK/ELKANOWITZ
#general
Sheldon Dan <sheldan1955@...>
I am researching a branch of my family which originated in Taurage,
Lithuania. I think that my great-great-grandfather David Elimelech (David King) DAN had three siblings. >from my research, one sibling was a daughter who married a man named ELKANOWITZ. They had a son and a daughter. The daughter married Feivel KUPERMAN (although some sources may have a shortened name). They had two daughters, Chaje Leie, born in 1850 in a nearby town, Upynas, and died there in 1827, and Dvora (Dorothy), born in 1852 in Upynas. Dvora married Dov Behr ROLNICK, born in 1840 in Upynas. They had four children, Leie (Lena), Hyman, Vuelvel (William), and Abel Judah. The children except Abel Judah immigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago and the Benton Harbor, MI, area, the same area that David King's son Solomon DEN lived. The son must have been named Abraham (Adolph) EKANOWITZ, who shortened his name to WITZ. We think he was born in 1864 in Taurage. He married a woman named Esther Johanna in 1887. Soon afterward, they had a daughter, Sylvia. Sylvia married Julian David MORRIS, who was born in 1875, in 1907 in Chicago. They had three sons: Sol, born in 1910 in Chicago; Bernard, born in Benton Harbor in 1919; and Herman, born in 1924. I think the Benton Harbor connection somehow connects my family to the Rolnicks and Elkanowitzes/Witzes. I would appreciate anyone who knows about these families to contact me privately. announcement of my book
#general
Judy Vasos
Dear Jewish Gen Members,
I'm happy to let you know a book I've been working on for over a decade - "My Dear Good Rosi, Letters >from Nazi-Occupied Holland, 1940-1943" - has now been published and is available for $16.95 >from Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and through Ingram at Independent bookstores, libraries and Jewish agencies. The book tells a compelling story through letters, photographs and historical documents of my husband's grandparents, Hugo and Clemy Mosbacher and their efforts to escape Nazi terror. After fleeing their long time home in Nuremberg, Germany for Holland, they prepared to sail to the United States to join their daughter, Rosi who had arrived safely in New York after leaving Nuremberg for London. Just one day before departure, the Nazis invaded Holland, all visas were canceled and the Mosbacher's lived under Nazi control for three years until their arrest and deportation in 1943 to Auschwitz where they were killed immediately. During their time in Amsterdam they rented a one room apartment with kitchen privileges. Other family members in Amsterdam came for simple Seder and birthday celebrations in an effort to create some semblance of normalcy while the Nazi noose was tightening around them. There even celebrated the wedding of a niece. And they wrote over 100 letters to Rosi and their "beloved ones" - letters filled with love, humor and anguish over their imposed separation. Rosi saved the letters for over 70 years and although she shared photos and documents with us, she couldn't let go of the letters - her last link with her parents. We discovered them in her desk drawer while helping her move shortly before her death. It was like finding gold! Hugo and Clemy's grandsons had never known them and usually referred to them as their mother's parents. Grandparents were for others not them. Reading the translated letters we now understand why Rosi often said "I wish you'd known my parents, they were such good people." I invite you to read this story and learn how Hugo and Clemy kept their hearts open and loving during a time of extreme duress. It offers inspiration as we face our own personal and political uncertainties today and speaks loudly to "Never Again". Thank you. Judy Vasos Historical Detective www.judyvasos.com

Know there are 24 oblasts/regions in Ukraine and many uzed/districts
also in Ukraine. Appears the borders of these oblasts/regions overlap into other provinces into other districts. Is there a map of these oblast/region borders showing their overlapping into other provinces/ districts thus showing the towns as well? would appreciate some clarification. Thank you. Sincerely, Mike Yesnes

December 15: deadline to submit family photo for January photo genealogy workshop at the Center for Jewish History in New York
#general
Moriah Amit
On January 23 at 6:30 PM, the Center for Jewish History will host a photo
genealogy workshop featuring Sherlock Cohn, the internationally-known Jewish genealogy sleuth. In this workshop, Sherlock will demonstrate why it's important to mine the clues our ancestors left for us in their photographs and how photo dating, photo identification, and fashion/ artifact history can help us solve some of our genealogy mysteries. If you plan to attend this workshop and have a family photo you would like Sherlock Cohn to analyze, please read the photo submission guidelines at sherlockcohn.bpt.me (deadline: December 15).
