JOWBR Update
#sephardic
Joyce Field
JewishGen is pleased to announce a major update to JOWBR, JewishGen's
Online Worldwide Burial Registry, a searchable database accessible at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/, There are now 689,125 burial records in 1,525 cemeteries and cemetery sections online. The cemetery section list can be viewed at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/tree/CemList.htm. JOWBR is totally dependent on donations of material >from individual donors and other organizations who share data with us. Every one of these donations is important to us, but I do want to point out a few noteworthy efforts for this update: -Bruno Segel, Rosanne Leeson, and others entered ~13,200 records >from Botosani, Moldavia -Terry Lasky has submitted over 16,000 records for Colorado cemeteries -JGS of Toronto, Canada has added to this update 13 more cemeteries and over 8,000 records, for a total of over 29,000 records, almost all of which have been submitted by Carolynne Veffer on behalf of the society -Mathilde Tagger submitted data on six cemeteries in Egypt -Jewish Cemetery Berg Altena in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, probably one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the "New World," has been added, containing 1,217 burial records Many more individuals and organizations have made important contributions of data to JOWBR, too many for us to acknowledge here, and we look forward to adding many tens of thousands records in every quarterly update with your help. For information on how you can submit records, see http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Submit.htm and http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/JOWBRinstructions.htm. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Nolan Altman, JOWBR technical coordinator, at nta@pipeline.com, or me. We are in need of Hebrew translators who can transcribe tombstone transcriptions >from Hebrew to English. If you can help, please contact Nolan Altman. The JOWBR database would not be possible without the efforts of Nolan Altman, Warren Blatt, Michael Tobias, and JewishGen. Joyce Field JewishGen VP, Data Acquisition

This is a very special event. Former Belchatower Harry Haft will be inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, April 29, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Suffolk Y-JCC 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack, NY 11725 Tel: 631-462-9800. His story of survival and his boxing career (he fought Rocky Marciano in 1948), written by his son Alan, has been published by Syracuse University Press. GRUNWALD from Budapest with Relatives in Slovakia and Romania

Dear Genners,
Earlier last year I posted a message asking for GRUNWALDs >from Slovakia. Since then I was able to make some progress, and am now looking for Grunwalds in Budapest with family relatives in Slovakia and Romania. I don't know the exact identity of the of those >from Budapest, although I can name people who were in touch or lived with them for certain periods. If my description rings a bell to anyone, even if only partially, please contact me. Best Regards, Shaul Sharoni, Israel

Spoiled?

Nancy Ring Kendrick <ringgenealogy@...>
As I check my daily email >from JewishGen I find it interesting the number of
posts that ask the question; "are these records available online?" It also triggers the thought of how spoiled genealogists have become with access to millions, upon millions of online historic records through this wonderful resource called the World Wide Web." I, too, am one of the spoiled ones! Years ago, I use to travel to libraries in Orlando, FL, (60 minute drive pending traffic), libraries in the Jacksonville area (90 minutes or more drive), and visit the local Family History Center searching for something, anything that was documentation of my BLOCH, KWASNY and RING ancestors. I did this an average of 3 times a month, when time allowed. Now I don't. Therefore, I only have my self to blame for not breaking through my brick wall. Are you guilty of the same? Many in this world have become so programmed to looking it up on the internet, no matter what the subject, they forget about all the other important resources for genealogy research. Not to mention, there is nothing better than scanning microfilm and hitting gold. This may be the case with many of you, with the exception of those with handicaps, etc. who really do not have the ability to get away >from the computer. For those who think the World Wide Web is your only resource for genealogy records, remember, you are so wrong. And, you are limiting your chances of discovery! The World Wide Web is only one way to search. The World Wide Web should be used in "combination" with other forms of resources, such as your local library, The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration in your area, The Family History Center, and so many, many, more! For those of you not in the United States, challenge yourself to learn what facilities in your area offer genealogy records to meet your needs. Then, use them! For many reading this, Spring is just around the corner! Get out, and away >from your computer and when possible commit at least four hours per month to genealogy research away >from the World Wide Web. Then take what you learn, and use the World Wide Web resources such as JEWISHGEN, JRI-Poland, and the thousands of other records online, and proceed. Remember, the World Wide Web is only one luxurious research option among thousands to assist you in your goals! It should be used as just that, one source of research, not the "only" resource. If you have comments, please reply privately, unless it would be educational and beneficial to subscribers. Good luck to all! I have been told that my relative Minnie SHIBKO was one of the first women
to be employed on Wall Street. She was born (in Chicago) in 1883 so this would presumably have been in the early years of the 20th century, prior to her marriage in 1913. Can anyone please suggest how I might be able to ascertain whether or not this is true? Many thanks, Jacqueline E. Gill, London, England. <shibko@hotmail.com>
