Holocaust era insurance policies #hungary

Tomer Brunner

some years ago the "Generali Fund" was established, in order to compensate
heirs of people who were insured by "Generali" company and perished in the
Holocaust.

People who think that their relatives had insurance policy, issued by
"Generali",
can contact the fund *** directly *** (without the help of lawyers, etc..)
and *** with with no cost at all ***.

"Generali Fund" do not publish a list of policy holders, but there is a site
which allows searching for policy holders of "Generali" and other companies.
The site is at www.pheip.org/search.asp

* I suggest that you enter only the surname and go through the all list of
results.
* Enter different spellings of your surnames.

If a person had insurance at "Generali" - it would *probably* be indicated
on this site.
(it seems that other companies are not specified, eventhough the names of
insured people are found on the site).

If you find a relative with "Generali" insurance policy (or if not and you
just want
to be sure...) I strongly suggest that you contact "Generali Fund" office
and ask for claim forms.
I know only the address of the office in Jerusalem:

1 Shazar st.
P.O.B 36311
Jerusalem 91360
ISRAEL

(if you are not located in Israel you might want to search for a local
office, if exists...)

If indeed they find a policy of your relatives then, besides the possible
payment that
the heirs might get, you can also get some genealogical details like:
Date and place of birth and occupation of the policy holder and name of
spouse.

As far as I know, the last date for submitting claims is January 2007, so
now is the time to do it!

Good luck!

Farkasne and Farkas as given names #hungary

Marian Brown

Dear Language experts,

Is it possible that Farkasne Turk is a way of stating that this female
is the wife of Farkas Turk? Or would Farkasne be a given name in its
own right?

Thanks,

Ellis Island notation #general

Re: "QE" notation on the Aliens held for Special Inquiry list:

Thanks to all those who responded to me concerning this notation. It does
appear that almost everyone was right that it stands for Quota Exceeded.
I found an article showing the notation and have read about the quota issues
starting in 1923. This family did arrive in November 1923 and it appears
they were allowed to land, kept somewhere for 7 days and then returned to
Ellis Island for 14 days before allowed to enter. They were probably 2nd
class passengers who landed ashore and not taken originally to Ellis Island
like the Steerage (3rd class) passengers were.

Very interesting information for those of you who care read some articles
dealing with the race to get ships into the US before the quota's were
exhausted, conditions at Ellis Island due to this situation, public
opinions, government involvement, etc, read "Immigration Quotas, Ellis
Island and Other Events of 1923" at
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/1923.htm Fascinating
information!

Re: "missing" manifest pages #general

Diane Jacobs <thegenie@...>

Also, if there is a check or X left of the person's name that means that
there is a detained or special inquiry page with their name and info on it.
These pages can be found at the beginning or the end of the regular manifest
pages. The detained manifest pages can be especially helpful if there is a
name and address to whom the person was going and it is different than the
one on the manifest page.

Dear Genners,
When you do your search for the newly posted records at A***.com (or for any
other records that you may find) , make sure to go forward or backward by one
page and thus secure the **second page of the manifest which includes more data
on your selected immigrant. This often where the nearest relative or contact in
the US is mentioned.

Synagogues in 19th century Netherlands #general

Clare <clare.l@...>

I am looking for the location of the Nienwedorp Synagogue in the
Netherlands?? I hope the spelling is correct. I found a donation, given by
one of the ancestors to this synagogue, as listed in the "Jewish Victorian".
The family moved >from Leeuwarden, Netherlands to London in 1814. I can find
no web listing of the names of synagogues of the Netherlands >from the
1800's. Any help would be appreciated.

Abrahao <435.gavea@...>

Hi people,

I'm Avraham Yehoshua Kahana, 24 years, currently living in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. I'm looking for any information I can find about the following
Shtetls/cities (I can't tell which were small shtetls or which would
have been real cities):

- Zychlin (Poland - near Kutno and Viskit)
- Sokirjany (Western Ukraine, near Ocnita, Briceva, Mogilev-Podolski)
- Kalarash
- Pikow (would any one figure out which city would that be, nowadays ?
I was told this it is >from Ukraine)
- Kishinev (Giverts family ?)

I would really appreciate exchanging/sharing information with whoever
may be interested in - >from simply listing useful sources and
institutions to describing experiences such as contacting foreign
government departments.

Thanks in advance and the good luck in your searches,
Avrum Kahana
