This may seem a dumb question depending on how long have you been
"playing" with genealogy - I'm wondering what the termination "wicz" means. Is that like a "son" , like "Johnson", "Iankilevich" or "Bendavit" ? My family name in Poland accounts to have been "KANO", but among all the names I've been searching in the past 3 months, this is the most rare to find about. Although it is refered to as KAHANA in hebrew, arising other possibilites, I'm wondering if it could have been a branch/ramification of "KANOWICZ" which I remember having seen a couple of times. Kol tuv, Avraham Yehoshua Kahana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Seeking: ============================================================Poland (Zychlin, Wiskitki), Lithuania/Belarus/surroundings: KANO (KAHANA), TZUKERKORN, SOCHACZEWSKI, SKROBECK ============================================================Romania, Moldova (Chisinau[Kishinev], Calarasi[Kalarash]): GIVERTS, ROSEMARIN, FRAIMAN ============================================================Ukraine (Sokiryany[Secureni], Ozeve[Ojeva]): SCHECHTMAN, TSIPERSTEIN, BERENSTEIN, KOIFMAN, TRACHTENBERG, VAISENBERG ============================================================

Berdichev Families

jo bunker <noob_saibot@...>
Dear Jewish Gen:
At www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/berdichev/Berdichevhistory.html you write that, "In 1797, Prince Radziwill granted seven Jewish cloth merchants the monopoly of the cloth trade in Berdichev, and in the first half of the 19th century the town's commerce was concentrated in Jewish hands." I'm curious whether the family names of the seven cloth merchants remain? I contacted Shtetl and they refered me to Jim Borman (the link's author), who suggested I forward my question to this list. Sincerely, J Bunker

We live in NJ too and our last trip to London we made the trek to the
Edmonton cemetery on Montague Road - we had to take 2 trains and a bus. For us it was worth the trip. The same train that we took went to Cambridge so it was sort of a stop on the way there. You are 100% correct about the benefits of an online database - if it was not for the generosity of other JCR-UK SIG members I would have never known that my family members were buried there. Name on Census-Viewmate

Pamela Weisberger <pweisberger@...>
I need suggestions on deciphering a name on a census record >from the Bronx,
New York in 1930 of a Galician/Austrian man. A close-up of the name appears on Viewmate. No clue what it might be. Any and all suggestions appreciated, sent to me privately, please. Here's the link: http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=8914 "Scrotha Bearus" is the best I can make out, which makes no sense at all. He is listed as the "father-in-law" of Louis Kaufman, and father of Louis's wife, Sophie. Both >from "Galicia." Discovering his surname, will provide her maiden name, which is what I'm after. Thanks! Hi All,
My father got a letter to take a train in Vienna so he ran and escaped over the mountains to Switzerland. When my mother turn came she was able to get phoney work papers >from a friend in Switzerland and joined my father. My Aunt told me she received a post card >from my artistic Father who painted the escape route >from Vienna over the mountains and since the mail was censored wrote "The sun is bright the cheese is good" and >from this she knew to leave quickly and left the night before crystal night. I guess in all families a few can understand each with a look or a raised eyebrow or some words on a post card. I don't know if the words were a preplanned code. I wish i was smart enough to ask more questions when i heard these things. Evelyn Filippi

Sally Bruckheimer <sallybru@...>
I am happy to hear that my explanation was correct for Galicia, but it
is a general statement, as I know nothing about Galicia, being a Litvak. I know that it was true in Russia. In Russia, as well as Galicia, the government kept civil records and didn't care about the religious marriage (unlike NY State, and probably others, where you must have a 'civil' marriage license to have a rabbi marry you). Vel was often used in the late 1820's and 1830's, when family surnames were not set. Sometimes, a person seemed to go alternately by two surnames, and would be called Smith vel Jones, Smith or Jones in English. Recte and valse said one name was 'correct' and the other was 'false' - a slightly different situation. Sally Bruckheimer Princeton, NJ

Re: Can someone appear twice in the same census?

Beth Galleto
I found two records >from the 1930 census for Joseph
OSHEROFF, 26. One was taken in Neola, Iowa and the other in Omaha, Nebraska. (Though in different states, Neola and Omaha are only about 15 miles apart.) The Neola record shows Joseph with his wife, Erma, 25, and sons Harold, 5, and Gene, 2 and ½. The Omaha record shows Erma, 27, and sons Harold, 6, and Gene, 1 and 9/12. On one, Erma was born in Utah and her parents born in Austria. On the other, she was born in Budpest and so were her parents. One says that Joseph immigrated in 1904; the other, in 1905. Both say he is naturalized. On one he is a butcher in a meat department and on the other, a meat cutter in a market. Oddly enough, both census pages were apparently enumerated on April 12. Although many of the “facts” do not agree, I think there is no doubt that these are both the same family. My guess is that the family either had two homes or was in the process of moving >from one to the other. In one case the census taker probably talked to the husband; in the other, to the wife.
