Dear Genners,
When you do your search for the newly posted records at A***.com (or for any
other records that you may find) , make sure to go forward or backward by one
page and thus secure the **second page of the manifest which includes more data
on your selected immigrant. This often where the nearest relative or contact in
the US is mentioned.

Need help with name and address in Israel (MEIRY/MEIRI) #general

Eve Line Blum <eve.line.blum@...>

Searching for my father's ancestors for years, I just heard of a lady
living in Israel who is certainly a close cousin of my father. She is
supposed to be waiting for a mail >from my part. Unfortunately, the
information that was given to me by phone was mispelled and I cannot
join this person. As far as I could hear it, the name and first name
seem to be spelled as "Techrya MEIRY" but, according to the
pronunciation (Hebrew to French, by phone, then to English...), it
may be slightly different. Someone told me that it could be "Techia
MEIRI" as well. This lady and her husband are living in Givataim
(Gevataim) near Tel Aviv. The address email that was given to me
(still by phone, which has distorted the exact spelling) was
"???@netvision.net".il
I hope that someone living in Israel will be able to help me and I
would be very grateful for this help. Please respond privately.

Re: Who gets named after whom? #general

Benjamin Gabriel Gelman <bengelman@...>

Ashkenazim typically name children after deceased relatives, Sephardim often
name after living relatives (although this is certainly not always done, but
I don't have enough knowledge on Sephardic tradition to expound).
When Ashkenazim choose a name, names of relatives who died at a young age
are typically not chosen. Furthermore, if there is a close living relation
with the same name, it may be avoided [e.g., the maternal grandfather's name
was Chaim (deceased). The paternal grandfather's name is also Chaim, but he
is still living. A child in this family would not be named Chaim (after the
maternal gf), as long as the paternal gf was still lving].
With regards to the order of naming: there is a Gemara (don't remember the
exact location, but will post it later) that indicates that the first child
is named for the father's side, the second for the mother's. However, there
is a widely accepted custom these days that reverses that order (I have not
yet found a source). Of course, many couples come up with "new" names,
wither for personal preferences, or because there is no one to name after
(all names are already taken, or nobody to name after).
Hope this sheds some light.

ROSENBERGER: Ichenhausen #germany

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

My great grand aunt Clari SELIGMANN(1847-1928) of
Ichenhausen, Bavaria, married Nathan ROSENBERGER, also
of Ichenhausen. They had a son Moritz (born in the
1870s) who married Sarah PUPP. Moritz spent a few
years working for his uncle Sigmund SELIGMANN in South
Africa. Moritz had a sister Jeanette and a brother
Isak.

In an 1836 list of householders in Ichenhausen (see
<http://digbib.bibliothek.uni-augsburg.de/1174/2.3_Hausbesitz.pdf>
) Jakob SELIGMANN - grandfather of Clari - who lived
at what is now Marktstrasse, 9, is listed as having
been “Handelsmann mit Samuel Rosenberger”. This Samuel
ROSENBERGER is listed as living in what is now
Marktgasse , 11, with a son Moritz ROSENBERGER. This
Moritz is clearly not the Moritz ROSENBERGER described
above, as the latter was not born until the 1870s.

I am keen to learn more about the descendants and
ancestors of Moritz ROSENBERGER, son of Nathan and
Clari ROSENBERGER.

Thanks,
Adam Yamey, London, UK

ViewMate Help Wanted - German record translation, Zduny Prussia #germany

Michael Tobias <michael@...>

Dear all,

I have a posted an 1838 marriage record in German >from the town of Zduny,
Prussia (now Poland) on the viewmate site.

The direct links to the 2-page marriage record are:

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=8818 and
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=8817

(I posted the pages in reverse order!)

If anybody can assist me by translating the column headings and all relevant
information it would be much appreciated.
In addition the Registration Book had 3 pages of introduction in free-format
handwritten German. I am hoping this will also have some information about
the town that will be useful in my research.

My grandmother arrived at Ellis Island in May 1913 aboard the Friedrich
der Grosse out of Bremen.

The manifest lists her nationality as "Austrian". Her last permanent
residence is given as "Galicia" within the city or town of Lanki Male.

I have searched the general discussion archives as well as the archives of
the SIGs, and can find no matches to this particular location.

Has anyone ever heard of this town? Is it mis-written? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
The only reference to Lanki Male using Google is at

http://www.loc.gov/rr/european/egwinv/egwl.html

Its district is given as Bobrka.

According to http://www.polishroots.org/geomaps/galicia_admin.htm Bobrka is
now in the Ukraine (near Lvov).
