This cemetery in Lviv-Lwow-Lemberg is situated at Janivska (Yanowska) street which is the beginning of the road in the direction of the city of Janiv (old Polish name Yanuw-Lwowski, now it is called Ivano-Frankowe, situated 35 km to the W >from Lviv). That is the reason of the name of the cemetery - it is called due to the name of the street, the street is called due to the name of the city. 2. I think Rakhil is a (Bible) form of Rachel. Shalom,
I recently posted a Polish record on ViewMate which needs translating. This is a marriage record registered in 1827, Jozefow, for Szmul Thorem and Laja Aychel. It can be viewed here. https://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/responselist.asp?key=69956 I'd be very grateful if anyone can help out. Re: using Tracing the Past

Ruth & Bruce Lynn <lynn33@...>
Hi everyone,
In contrast to Jeffrey Knisbacher's disappointment in Tracing the Past, I've found new information on more than a dozen family members by using this new database! This new information includes death dates and emigration data that is not included in the Yad Vashem Shoah victims database, nor in the German Jewish Roof Card Collection, nor in the 1939 census online. Of course I also checked the database for many, many more family members who did not turn out to be listed there, but I'm thrilled with all of the new information that I did find. Thanks so much to the creators of the Tracing the Past project! Ruth Nadelman Lynn, Lexington, Mass. lynn33@rcn.com

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page

Bruce Drake <BDrake@...>
According to its Yizkor book, "Stryj on earth was destroyed by the
Nazis in 1943, in the year 5703 of the Jewish era." Eleven years after the extermination of the Jews in this Ukraine town, Jonah Friedler recounted the terrible and blood-chilling events that began with the arrival of the Germans, the establishment of the ghetto, and the hardships and horrors the people suffered not only >from the Nazis, but especially the Ukrainians who he called "the axe in the hands of the Gestapo." Friedler's account can best be summed up in his own words: "Death is a dreadful thing, but sevenfold more dreadful was the way that led to it." Subject: More on Jewish soldiers serving in Franz Yosef's army
#galicia
I subscribe to several discussion groups and earlier this month
responded to a query in Gesher Galicia, posted on October 6, 2018, namely, "Subject: Jewish soldiers serving in Franz Yosef's army." I responded back referring to a dual language (German/English) book I own, published in 1989, by Dr. Erwin A. SCHMIDL, with the English title, "Jews in the Habsburg Armed Forces, 1788-1918." Since that posting, I was inundated by interested individuals asking how they could get a copy (either impossible or very expensive); some wanting to find out if their family member's name was mentioned; and some sending me histories of their soldier-relative. To help them, I copied out the list of names in the book and created a PDF of it. The problem then became, how do I make this available to people? Since the initial query was >from Gesher Galicia, and thinking Poland, I decided to post it at the bottom of this page of my only Polish KehilaLinks site (https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/nowy_targ/Nowy_Targ-Other.html). I also managed to contact the writer himself, and Dr. Erwin A. SCHMIDL was very gracious in also providing me with the similar index list for his newer book entitled, "Habsburgs Juedische Soldaten, 1848-1918." This book, published in 2014, is entirely in German, but Dr. SCHMIDL is working on an extended English version that is due out sometime 2019-2010. In the meantime, he sent me the similar list of names and places in the existing German language book. This list (in PDF format) has also been added at the end of the same webpage, https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/nowy_targ/Nowy_Targ-Other.html Dr. SCHMIDL (erwin.schmidl@gmail.com) added that he would welcome receipt of soldier-histories >from those who have them.
