SILVERMAN - Worcester, Massachusetts #lithuania

Alexandra Alznauer <petiealznauer@...>

I am looking for information about or any family of Nochem SILVERMAN of
Girkalnis (Girtagole, Girtagoly), Lithuania. He sailed on the S.S.
Rotterdam on June 23rd 1906 and arrived in New York at Ellis Island on July
5, 1906. Nochum was 18 years old and the ship's manifest lists his
occupation as tailor. Nochum was going to his sister, E. Silverman, who was
at 15 Harding Street, Worcester, Massachusetts.

I am trying to piece together the ZILBERMAN family of Girkalnis and link
them to the TATZ and other families of Girkalnis, Raiseiniai and Pasvyntys.
I am the granddaughter of a ZILBERMAN >from Girkalnis. If you are related to
Nochum or Elizabeth we may be cousins.

I have searched for Nochum in WWI Draft lists and various US censuses but
have not found him. He may have changed his first name to something like
Nathan, Nat, Ned, etc.

lost their lives at Auschwitz and Teresenstat. The family name was BLATT.

Re: Rzeszow #galicia

Robin Meisner <the.meisners@...>

Hi all!

With regard to Rzeszow, I have been researching the Rzeszow records
and I have had a lot of luck. I have the Excel spreadsheets of the
Census for 1765, 1770, 1870, 1890 and 1910, and the birth and death
records on JRI Poland have been extremely helpful, especially using
the Soundex search methods. Marian Rubin has been very helpful, as
she has helped direct me to the resources I so needed.

I do hope you will investigate and feel free to contact me any time.
I am sure there are always more discoveries being made, as Suzan has
said. I have had much success in piecing together the families with
what has been made available thus far. I even found the streets from
the 1910 Census on a modern map, and matching with the house numbers
from 1870 (where street names are not listed), we can one day travel
to their old homes!

Also I know that many records >from Nowy Sacz (Neu Sandez) are now
just starting to be indexed (where my other relatives are from).
It is all very exciting and I am always happy to share any
discoveries with my fellow researchers. Let us find our families!

Sincerely,
Robin (Nack) Meisner

Tyczyn and Rzeszow #galicia

Marian Rubin

Suzan Wynne mentioned Rzeszow records held in the Lviv Archive
(excerpt below).

Rzeszow birth records for 1841-1866 held in the Lviv Archive have
been indexed and are included in the JRI-Poland database.

Additional Rzeszow birth records for 1866 are held in the Rzeszow
Archive. They have been indexed, and they also appear in the
JRI-Poland database.

Marian Rubin
Coordinator, the Rzeszow Research Group
San Francisco

Mark Halpern included the names of two communities in the list of
those whose records were in Lviv and recently filmed by the Mormons:
Mark mistakenly listed the town of Tuchin. It should be Tyczyn, a
subdistrict of Rzeszow district, which encompasses many small towns
in a very large area to the south of the town. Mark was unsure about
whether Rzeszow records were also included in this group. They are.

In speaking of records in the Lviv Archives, Suzan Wynne writes:

"I never personally researched the Rzeszow records so I can't
report anything about what they look like but I assume that they
are equally sparse [i.e., as sparse as Tyczyn records], as all of
the other early Rzeszow records in Poland are."

I don't know how full of information these records are either, but
I checked the Routes to Roots Foundation site
(http://www.rtrfoundation.org/search.asp) to see what was available
for Rzeszow. The good news for Rzeszow researchers is that there
appear to be quite a few records of many different types for this
shtetl -- in Lviv as well as in Rzeszow itself, where I have heard
that there is a very dedicated archivist who is committed to getting
all the Jewish records into some sort of order. (At least, this is
what the guide I had on a 2004 ShtetlSchleppers trip told me.)
