SCHLOMKOWICZ Family #general

DZENA4@...

I am researching in to the SCHLOMKOWICZ family. David Schlomkowicz and his
wife Annie AURBACH came >from Galacia area of Poland. His father was an egg
merchant and her father Eleazer Aurbach was a weaver. He had 2 brothers
according to his marriage certificate Joseph and Leib. Annie had a sister Leah. I am
trying to trace the origins of his family in Poland.
David married Annie in london in 1902 and lived in Brady Street. They had 3
children Oscar, Francis and Selina. He was a hairdresser.
If any one can help me with this i would be so grateful. Or have come across
this family in Brady Street.
thanks zena davison >from Ascot Berkshire

Jill and Rebecca,

These websites you mention are not the only game in town (so to speak). I
co-administer the British Jewry list on Rootsweb and we have many databases
posted to our website of interest to genealogists. Someone could have
Bernie contact either myself or my co-administrator to arrange it.

I have asked a number of times if the Liverpool records can be placed on
the
JGSGB or JCRUK websites. But to date I have received no reply.

MODERATOR NOTE: It would be interesting to know who Jill and Rebecca have approached
to ask "if the Liverpool records can be placed on record". Liverpool Central
Library Archives Section holds a large respository of Jewish community records,
with the listing accessible via their website. Please note that JCR-UK (the largest
recipient of UK data) holds over 80,000 records >from many different UK sources in

Marriage Record Translation (Hebrew to English) #germany

Steve Hahn <steve@...>

MODERATOR NOTE: We suggest that the JewishGen ViewMate service be used
for requests of this kind.

Dear members,

I posted the marriage record for my great great
grandparents, Abraham MANN, and Caroline ANSPACH who
were married at the Rodeph Shalom Congregation in
Philadelphia, Pa. It is posted at:

http://steve.info/hebrew/

I have already received a translation of it by one of
our members (but I wouldn't mind having a second).

I posted the marriage records I found for people
having the name, MANN or ANSPACH who were also married
at the Rodeph Shalom Congregation (Ratchel MANN and
Mary ANSBACH). I do not know if I am related, but if
I knew the names of their fathers, I could rule them
out as siblings of Abraham and Caroline. I do not
need these records fully transcribed (unless their
father is Jacob MANN or AARON ANSPACH), I just need to
know who the father of Ratchel MANN and Mary ANSBACH
is. I know Caroline ANSPACH was survived by a sister,
and Mary could be her. Abraham is buried with two
sisters, but may have others. Thank you!

Daniel Mendelsohn in L.A. Dec. 11th - JGSLA Meeting #poland

Pamela Weisberger <pweisberger@...>

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles presents acclaimed author,
Daniel Mendelsohn, on Monday, December 11th at 7:30 PM at the Skirball
Cultural Center, Magnin Auditorium, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
90049.

"The Are Tears in Things: Remembering and Retelling the Holocaust

Daniel Mendelsohn discusses "The Lost: A Search for Six of
Six Million"

"The Lost" is much more than a book about the Holocaust. It is about
rescuing the stories of the Holocaust and re-imagining the lives of those
who perished so they are no longer lost to history

In this rich and riveting narrative, a writer's search for the truth behind
his family's tragic past in World War II becomes a remarkably original epic
- part memoir, part reportage, part mystery, and part scholarly detective
work - that brilliantly explores the nature of time and memory, family and
history.

The Lost begins as the story of a boy who grew up in a family haunted by the
disappearance of six relatives during the Holocaust - an unmentionable
subject that gripped his imagination >from earliest childhood. Decades later,
spurred by the discovery of a cache of desperate letters written to his
grandfather in 1939 and tantalized by fragmentary tales of a terrible
betrayal, Daniel Mendelsohn sets out to find the remaining eyewitnesses to
his relatives' fates. That quest eventually takes him to a dozen countries
on four continents, and forces him to confront the wrenching discrepancies
between the histories we live and the stories we tell. And it leads him,
finally, back to the small Ukrainian/Galician town of Bolechow where his
family's story began, and where the solution to a decades-old mystery awaits
him.

Expressing how the Holocaust continues to affect people who had no direct
experience of it, Mendelsohn, the classicist, expands on Vergil’s text:
“There are tears in things," by adding, "but we all cry for different
reasons.” Join us as Mendelsohn recounts this astonishing journey to rescue
from “generalities, symbols, and abbreviations,” the family, who, like many
of our own vanished ancestors, were calling out “to be known.”

DANIEL MENDELSOHN is an award-winning author, journalist, and critic,
educated at the University of Virginia and at Princeton. After completing
his Ph.D. in Classics in 1994, he began a career in journalism in New York
City, and since then his articles, essays, reviews and translations have
appeared frequently in numerous national publications, including The New
Yorker, The New York Times, New York, The New York Review of Books, Esquire,
and Travel & Leisure, where he is a contributing editor. >from 2000 to 2002,
he was the weekly book critic for New York Magazine, for which he won the
National Book Critics Circle Award for Excellence in Criticism. He is the
faculty chair of humanities at Bard College.

There will be a book sale and signing after Mendelsohn's lecture.

JRI-Poland Project Initiated to Index Galician Records from LDS Microfilms #poland

Mark Halpern

A great debt of gratitude to Mark Jacobson, Renee Steinig, and Gesher
Galicia Research Coordinator, Pamela Weisberger for announcing and
detailing the availability of 108 rolls of microfilm at the LDS Family
History Library covering Jewish records filmed at the Central State
Historical Archives of Ukraine branch in Lviv. This very valuable
collection covers records for some 60 Galician towns, most of which are
now located in Ukraine, and span years >from 1789 to 1942 (in some
towns).

These records are complementary (not duplicative) of the records for
eastern Galician towns found at the AGAD Archive in Warsaw. JRI-Poland
has already indexed many of the Jewish vital records in the AGAD
collection.

We are very pleased to announce a new JRI-Poland Area Shtetl CO-OP
project to index this valuable collection of LDS microfilms. All Shtetl
CO-OP projects come under the leadership of JRI-Poland's Associate
Director and Shtetl CO-OP Coordinator, Hadassah Lipsius. Hadassah now
oversees more than 200 individual town Shtetl CO-OP projects. This group
of projects (towns with vital records filmed at the Archive in Lviv,
Ukraine) will be coordinated by Mark Halpern, Shtetl CO-OP Area
Coordinator for the East Galicia area. This is a natural extension of
Mark's work as AGAD Archive Coordinator. This indexing project will be
undertaken in cooperation with Gesher Galicia.

The Shtetl CO-OP concept is an outgrowth of the experiences of many
researchers, who found that extracting information only on their
families >from LDS films was a duplication of effort. Shtetl CO-OPs
emphasize the value of cooperative research and sharing amongst groups
of volunteers with a common interest in an ancestral town.

Galician researchers with an interest in any of these towns (see list
below) or those interested in coordinating the indexing of the records
for their town should contact either Mark Halpern at
willie46@comcast.net or Hadassah Lipsius at kesher@lipsiusgroup.com.
JRI-Poland will be contacting the LDS Family History Library to
facilitate the indexing of these records.

Re: Jewish genealogy shaped by the Gold Rush #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Judith Romney Wegner wrote referring to my previous posting: "So, I was
surprised to learn that you have found no references to Jews and the Australian
Gold Rush on the Internet!"

I was most interested to hear of Judith's connection to Gold Rush families, but
but what I actually wrote was: There are many references to Jews and the
Californian Gold Rush to be found on the internet, but *as yet* I have found
none specifically dealing with the *genealogy of named families* in the
Australian Gold Rush.

There are many references you can find if you google - Australia Jews Gold
Rush - and variations but few lead to genealogical gems as I found with
families such as ROSENBLATT and WALLACH. I have now done more focussed research
and found some genealogical details of a number of early immigrants to
Australia, once I had broken into the network of the Australian Dictionary of
Biography and the Susser Archive:

1. Sir Julius VOGEL [1835-1899], journalist and premier, born 24 Feb 1835,
London - father Albert Leopold VOGEL, a Jew of Dutch origin and Phoebe nee
ISAAC: http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A060356b.htm
You can find him in the 1891 census of England with a wife born in Launceston,
Tasmania, a daughter called Phoebe and a large retinue of servants.

2. Joseph STERNBERG (1852-1928), auctioneer and politician born 3 April 1852,
London to Alexander STERNBERG and Frederica nee PLATT.
http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A120086b.htm
He married Selina daughter of Barnet LAZARUS and sister of D B Lazarus in
Sandhurst aka Bendigo on 3 Nov 1880.

3. Daniel Barnet LAZARUS (1866-1932), mining director and politician, born 20
Oct 1866 Bendigo, fifth child of Polish-born Barnet LAZARUS and Dina, nee
ABRAHAM >from London.

4. M.V.LAZARUS aka Bendigo Lazarus [no early family details]:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Australia

And here is a very interesting reference with many names and genealogical
details - http://tinyurl.com/yj9vsx

Like gold and diamonds, these genealogical gems are not always easy to find on
the internet, but once you have a strike you can proceed!
