Note that many people on the list are shown as >from Kurinetz, Karancz,
Kurenitz, Kurenec and similar names. Since the web page you reference is
titled "Ellis Island Passengers list form Kurenets," these and your "Kernize
" are all mis-readings or mis-writings of the same place name.

Kurenets was within the Russian Empire in 1914 but is now in Belarus. It is
83 km NNW of Minsk at 54 degrees 33 minutes North and 26 degrees 57 minutes
East.

Two More Faikes Siblings-Jennie Frankel & Zelda Segal-Need Help In Finding More Information On Them #general

sacredsisters3@aol.com <sacredsisters3@...>

Hello

I just had a wonderful volunteer lookup an obit on an ancestor of mine.
Her name was Jennie(Faikes)Frankel. She was a sibling of my grandfather
Milton Faikes. She died in March of 1959. According to her obit she
also had a sister named Zelda(Faikes)Segal. I would like to find more
information on Zelda, but when I do a search I come up blank. I do have
her on the passenger manifest, which listed her as age 21. On the
manifest her name is spelled as Selda Faikis.

Jennie lived with her husband Joseph and three kids in Philadelphia.
The kids names mentioned in the obit are Sylvia Fay Davis, Ruth
Debenberg of Cheltenham, and William Frankel. Can anyone help me get in
contact with any of these children if they are still living or their
grandchildren.

Any and all help is appreciated

Agudat Achim Cemetery in Los Angeles - Peretz PARKER #general

tina levine

[corrected for grave location-Mod.]

I am trying to obtain headstone information for Peretz
PARKER (born Peretz Pachter) who died 4/30/1936 and is
buried at Agudat Achim Cemetery, 1022 South Downey
Road in Los Angeles. The grave is located at North 47,
Number 9.

I need to know the name of his father in order to
confirm that Peretz was/was not a brother of my
great-grandfather David Pachter.

I would be most grateful if someone could go there and
either take a photo or email me the name of his father
as it appears on the headstone.

Sincere thanks to anyone who can help out. Please

Jewish colonies in Ukraine #ukraine

Chaim freedman

There were a number of Jewish colonies in Kherson Guberniya which were
collectively referred to as "Judenplan". The names of the colonies were
Isluchisyaya, Kamenka, Novokovno, Novopodolsk, Novovitebsk, and
Novozhitomir.

I am seeking information about these colonies, in particular families who
lived there.

In addition I am seeking information about a German (Lutheran) colony
Schoenbaum, located in the Grunau group north-west of Mariupol, since
members of my Levin family lived there.

Weitzners of Lemberg/L'vov #ukraine

I'm looking for info on the WEITZNER family of Lemberg, Galicia. My
grandfather Rubin WEITZNER and his older brother Charles arrived in 1891.
Some family members think Charles arrived first and Rubin followed later.
Rubin marries Pauli SCHEIN/Pauline SCHOEN and had 4 children. He worked as a
conductor for the NYC Transit Authority.Charles married Yetta UPIN and had 9
children. Charles died young in an industrial accident in 1917.

Re: Discovery about Relative in Savannah #general

Maria T <elena@...>

Thanks to the kind efforts of the Savannah Archive representatives, I'm
in possession of two death notices for my mother's great uncle, Bernard
(or Barnett) Maltinsky, in 1934. Two interesting questions popped up as
a result:

1. The notice informs the reader that Masonic ceremonies will be
performed. Apparently Bernard Maltinsky was a Mason. Of course now I
need to find out how and why he became one. Does anyone have advice as
to how to approach the Freemasons (is there a key branch, should I try
to contact the Savannah branch directly, etc.).

2. The wake was held in the home of Bernard Maltinsky's "brother in
law", Dr. Philip Rubin, on East Anderson Street. This was a totally new
name to me, and I have gathered these facts about him: he was born in
Florida, in 1899, to Morris and Rachel Rubin. They were >from Russia,
came to the US about 1886 (not sure if they were married at the time);
moved to Georgia (Savannah, presumably) in about 1900 when Philip's
younger sister, Hattye, was born. In 1930, according to the census,
Philip is married to Freda, and is an insurance agent. Microfilm
directories for Savannah confirm this. He then disappears >from the
directories until 1934 when he is now at the correct East Anderson
Street address and he is a chiropodist. Hattye appears to still be
unmarried. Freda's maiden name is yet unknown, but her father was
apparently French, her mother Polish. She seems to have had a sister
with whom she and Philip were living. The sister, Sophie, is married to
a man name Al Siegel.

None of this gives me much in the way of connecting the Rubins to either
the Maltinskys or to the Paderewskis, into whose family Bernard
Maltinsky married. I have a hunch that the connection will reveal itself
through Freda Rubin's Polish mother and that it will be via the
Paderewskis that they are linked to Bernard, but it's all very
mysterious at the moment.

Does anyone have any connections with Dr. Philip Rubin of Savannah, born
in Florida, and/or his wife Freda?

Many thanks,

Maria Torres

Re: Bazaar #ukraine

dave_mason@juno.com <dave_mason@...>

"Bazaar" and its variants must be one of the many loan words from
Turkish or Persian in the Ukrainian and Russian languages.

Particularly in the southern steppes, these (and other) cultures
predated Russian and Ukrainian settlements.

So there must have been pre-existing market towns and trade centers --
"bazaars" -- retaining this title even after locally dominant
languages changed to Ukrainian or Russian. It's correct usage may
have been adjectival (such-and-such bazaar). However speakers of
unrelated languages probably didn't know this and evidently started
using it as a noun.

"Bazaar" is such a common word that it is hardly surprising to find
multiple instances. Evidently there was no centralized naming
committee preventing names >from being duplicated at different
locations.
