Immigrants' visas were forwarded to the INS (now USCIS) in Washington, DC. The
visa files for people admitted to the US for permanent residence after July 1,
1924, can be requested under FOIA. See

have the visa's been issued. The father had sent for his four kids, but
they came over two at a time in two different years(2 girls and 2
boys).I would like to know how to get copies of the visas on these
children. They were all born in Minsk, Russia but at the time of
departure were in Rotterdam, Netherlands. On one of the passenger lists
it even states something about a petition approved in regards to two of
the children both boys who came over in 1927. I believe that all of
these 4 children may have been in an orphanage waiting for family to
come get them.

If anyone can help me answer these questions of mine I would appreciate
it. The two girls are listed as Sara & Hana Rakowtshik and the boys as
Berel & Simon Rakovschik/Rakowschik.

KALICH of Tzfat and Ustrzyki Dolne / Istrik #galicia

Yaron Pedhazur

Dear Genners,

I am re-researching my KALICH / KALECH family roots.

The family came originally >from Istryk / Ustrzyki Dolne (Galicia,
now in Poland, 49°26' 22°35'). The first was Yeshaya Sholomo Zalman
KALICH who was son-in-law of the town Rebbe, Yissacahr Berish BER,
and son of Moshe Yosef KALICH. YS"Z died in Tzfat in 1879. As he
was son-in-law of the town's Rav, I don't really know if he was
originally >from Istryk. I think he may have immigrated to Tzfat
also just after the Montefiore census, so I cannot find there his
birth place.

When I look into the JRI-Poland index, I mainly see KALICH in
Lublin and its surroundings. Thus far, I could not see the relation,
and there are no records >from Istrik to help.

Also, there is a family tradition by which the KALICH family descend
of the Rav Abraham Yehoshua Heschel of Apt (Apta Rav, or "Ohev
Israel"). However, the lineage has not been traced yet.

Any info on the KALICH family, or leads as to how to trace its
origins, will be most helpful!

Please respond also directly to: yarpd@yahoo.com

Thank you,

Ruth Kluger's autobiography #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Ruth Kluger* [born in Vienna abt 1931] has written an autobiography: "To
Continue to Live". You may be interested to read this recent interview with her
talking of her "trip" >from Vienna to Theresienstadt to Auschwitz and finally to
California: http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,435879,00.html

I have no personal interest in the book {statement according to Jewishgen
policy}.

I *suspect* [but have no documentary proof] that Ruth's father was Dr Victor
Kluger of Lindengasse 38, Vienna VII. Here is a POT for Victor, written
apparently by his brother in Israel in 1957 [nb the family name differs]. This
says he died in Auschwitz [incorrect - see below]. Family data given is as
follows:

Father's First Name: Gerson: Mother's First Name: Katharina
Spouse's First Name: Alina
Spouse's Maiden Name: GREIDINGER
Permanent residence: Wien Profession: Physician
Submitter's Name: REINER Jehuda {brother}
Registration date 17/02/1957

However, the name and birth date coincide with Serge Klarsfeld's site and
lettertothestars: http://www.lettertothestars.at/ which tells a different
story supporting Ruth's account: Victor was born on 21 Jan 1899 in Vienna. His
last address has not been researched. Victor Kluger was deported >from Drancy on
15 May 1944 to Kowno {Reval]. As usual, we have the sentence at the end "there
is no further information about Victor's place and date of death."

This is probably the grave of Ruth's grandfather:

KLUGER Gerson aged 64 12.07.1916 Zentralfriedhof Gate 1 52/20/9
Could this be her grandmother? Another holocaust victim:

Katharina was born on 02 July 1866 in Zilina. Her last known address was Vienna
2, Rembrandtstrasse 6. Katharina was deported on 24 Sept 1942 >from Vienna to
Theresienstadt ..... No further data is available about her place or date of
death. I have not found a POT for Katharina, which is strange if Yehuda was her
son. We remember Victor and Katharina here today.

Using JewishGen funds for IAJGS conference #austria-czech

Dear Siggers,

JewishGen has agreed to allow us to use some of the funds that you all have
donated and earmarked for the SIG to help pay for two speakers at the 2007
IAJGS conference in Salt Lake City. SIG member and IAJGS president
Anne Lee is coordinating the invitations to two potential speakers >from
Austria. Our plan is to alternate and concentrate on Austria in 2007 and
the Czech Republic in 2008, and so on. I have heard >from others who are
also planning lectures at the conference. It should be a good one.

Now would be a great time for all of you to make year-end donations to
JewishGen and the SIG. It is quite easy to do if you follow the link to
http://www.jewishgen.org/jewishgen-erosity/. I would recommend making at
least half of your donation to the JewishGen general fund. This pays for
all of the resources that JewishGen provides us, which are quite expensive.
Funds earmarked for the SIG will be used for special projects and events.

Thanks again to all of you who contribute to JewishGen. Your donations
make everyone's genealogical work possible.

Announcement Concerning JRI-Poland Projects with Polish State Archives #galicia

Jewish Records Indexing - Poland

Dear Fellow Researchers:

On September 26, 2006, Dr. Slawomir Radon, the former Director of
the Polish State Archives in Krakow, was appointed as General
Director of the entire Polish State Archive (PSA) system. On
November 9, 2006, Jewish Records Indexing - Poland was notified of
the unilateral termination of two Agreements that had previously
been concluded with the PSA and signed by Dr. Radon's predecessor.

Effective November 30, 2006, after more than nine years of
cooperation, Director Radon has chosen to terminate the Indexing
Project that covered the indexing of all Jewish records not
previously microfilmed by the LDS Church that are in the possession
of the PSA and are more than 100 years old.

Effective November 17, 2006, after more than three years of
operation, the JRI-Poland online ordering system has been
terminated. The online ordering system handled orders for all
records indexed under the Indexing Project.

It is with great disappointment that we must report these decisions
concerning this aspect of JRI-Poland's widespread activity. The
JRI-Poland Board is taking every step possible to address this
situation. We will continue to provide service to the Polish Jewish
Genealogical community. The online database will continue to
operate providing a finding aid and tool for researchers to
identify records of interest.

If you have a question on the status of any Archive indexing
project, please send your messages to questions@jri-poland.org.

Other JRI-Poland projects to index records >from other sources,
including the LDS Microfilms of Polish Jewish records, will
continue.

If you have a question on the order processing system, please
contact Mark Halpern, Order Processing Coordinator, at
willie46@comcast.net. Mark will soon have a follow-up announcement
explaining how to order records in the JRI-Poland database that
were not microfilmed by the LDS Church.

Up until the end of the month, JRI-Poland will continue to index
records >from some Archives and Branches. Along with our existing
backlog of new data, researchers will continue to see additions to
the JRI-Poland database. JRI-Poland, in our normal course of
business, continues to explore and acquire new sources of
genealogical data to help you in your research.

The 1851 UK census shows records of the Hebrew Girls Boarding School
Palestine Place Bethnal Green. This innocuous listing conceals the fact
that Palestine Place Bethnal Green was the headquarters of London Society

However my parents told me the the poor Jews of the East End before WW1of
