Re: Visit to Bialystok #poland

1. Visiting Bialystok/Records

My family emigrated >from Bialystok to New York in about 1905 - Poznanski -
and I have visited there three times in the last two years, as I currently
live in Budapest. It is an easy plane ride to Warsaw ( 1 hour) and then a
2-hour train ride to Bialystok.

There is one Jewish woman there, Lucy Gold, whom I met through Mark Halpern,
the Coordinator of BialyGen. Lucy is wonderful, works with the city of
Bialystok on its annual commemoration of the Ghetto uprising (Aug 16-23,
1943), as well as travels with visitors who want to see Bialystok, the
Jewish cemetery and surrounding countryside (Treblinka, Tykocin, which
has a beautiful synagogue). I don't know Tamas Wisnieswski, although I
have surfed his website.

Re Records >from the 1880s -- I believe there are some, and Lucy works with
the archivists in town, as well.

If you are interested in contacting Lucy - she speaks English - not
perfectly - but better than most people in Bialystok -- I will be happy to
send you her email address.

I hope this has been helpful.

Karyn Posner

Anti-Semitism in Bialystok #poland

Bialystoker

Dear BialyGenners:

In this forum, I have previously reported about the interest of
"educated" Polish people (and specifically the Bialystok area) in the
former Jewish history and culture of Poland.

In March 2006, a terrible incident occurred in Bialystok that shows the
interest of some in teaching Tolerance and others in spreading Hate.
Even though very few Jews live in the Bialystok region, hate continues
to exist.

Read about this incident at

I am looking for information about Julius LICHTENSTEIN
(my great grand father) who was a lawyer in Danzig
with active participation in the KC and in the Jung
Juedisscher Bund. I also found an artiCle by Grzegorz
Berendt citing his name as a member of the "Auxilium
Academicum Judaicum". He lived in Danzig until 1939
when he left to Zakopane where he was arrested by
German officers. My grand father (Hans LICHTENSTEIN)
left some months before to Palestine in a trip
organized by the Jewish community in Danzig.

I would appreciate if somebody in this forum has any
information.

Thanks very much

Lithuanian Jews in Sweden #scandinavia

Lloyd A.

My great grandfather came to America in 1886. He was
probably >from Lithuania. However, the ship manifest
lists his previous residence as Stockholm.
Originally, I assumed that Stockholm was merely a
way-station on the way to America, but I have read
that Russian Empire Jews moved to Sweden during this
time to avoid pogroms. Would you think that it is
more likely that Stockholm was just a transfer point
for a Russian Jew in 1886 or do you think that it is
at least possible that my ancestor lived in Sweden for
some extended period? I have also read that about
this time, most Lithuanian Jews who migrated to Sweden
came >from the Suwalki area.

My great grandfather's surname, SUSSMAN (or ZUSMAN),
was somewhat common in that area.

Research inn Wuppertal [Resources for] #germany

Henry Wellisch <henry.kelwel@...>

Some years ago the University of Wuppertal started several major
research projects into the Nazi period. One project is entitled:
Juedische Buerger in Wuppertal und Umgebung zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus
(Jewish citizens in Wuppertal at the time of National Socialism)

The other project is called:
Arisierung juedischen Eigentums in Wuppertal (Arianization of Jewish
Property in Wuppertal).

Further Information can be found on:

http://www.wiwi.uni-wuppertal.de/Projekt_2.298.0.html

In connection with these projects the University has established a
searchable database under the title "Juedische Verfolgte in Wuppertal"
(Persecuted Jews in Wuppertal) which can be accessed on the internet under:

http://www.ns-verfolgung.uni-wuppertal.de/

These projects cover over 4000 persons, but because of German privacy
laws the database included only those born before 1916.

Duccio Leoni England member 217885 <duccio.leoni@...> Asked:
"....> Does anyone know how to go about to find:
1) How long the families have been in Ebelsbach? 2) what was their business?
3) is there any archives available to search as more than likely the
registration of births, deaths and marriages would not be recorded yet
centrally? 4) Was there a synagogue and is it still there?
I would suggest that you persevere as doing the exact same as you did, I
received a very good response >from Bavaria 8 or 9 years ago.

You would need to find the cemetery where Jews in the area were buried and
then obtain the cemetery list. [JewishGen offers two Cemetery Data Bases:
JOBR and IAJGS Cemetery Registry. MOD]

You also need to find the list of Jewish births, marriages and deaths.

I have recently obtained eg the marriage list for Wallerstein for 1820 to
1880. I can't speak about the area of Ebelsbach.

Therefore you need to identify the rabbinate which covered the area of
Ebelsbach (Wallerstein covered all the surrounding towns and villages).

It is also possible that you had relations that were left behind in Ebelsbach.

There is a paragraph in German about the Jews of Ebelsbach in
http://www.vg-ebelsbach.de/index.phtml?La=1&object=tx|423.674

See: http://www.juden-in-bamberg.de/Letter_from_bamberg/Letter_18/lfb18_20.htm
about the Jews in Ebelsbach (in English).

says that the Limbach cemetery received the burials >from Ebelsbach >from 1714
(not precise translation).
