Viewmate- Russian + Hebrew to English Translations needed #general

Hi all,

I'm requesting help with Russian translation to English of a Yad Vashem PoT
testimonial and the Hebrew to English translation of 2 other PoT's. I would
like to double check details but more importantly I need the address and
telephone number of the original submitters so that I could try and contact
them as I think we may have a common ancestor.

Thanks in advance. Could you reply privately.

Seeking for Sylvia HEID (born POLIACOF) from Australia #general

EG <ejg063@...>

Hello forum members,

My mother's cousin , Sylvia POLIACOF, immigrated to Australia at the
begining of the '50.
She was born in Constanta Romania in 1928 as Sylvia POLIACOF(or
POLACOF) to Samuel and Netty.
In 1946 she immigrated to Israel, married to Mr. HAID or HEID and
immigrated to Australia.
I know she had at least 2 children (boy and girl).

I'm trying to find her or her descendents and re-establish the
connection broken 50 years ago.
Does anyone know this family?

Many thanks for your cooperation,

Eli Greenhut

Ships with escaping Jews that sank during WWII #general

roe kard

One of the family stories is of a cousin who died on a ship carrying
Jews trying to escape >from Europe during or after WWII. Is there a
listing anywhere of ships such as this that sank? and a listing of
passengers? We checked the Struma but his name as we know it was not
listed.

Thank you.
B'shalom,

Re: English-language Jewish Newspapers in NY (1903) #general

<<If anyone knows of the names of English-language Jewish newspapers

One periodical that was publishing in 1903, was "The Jewish Messenger," founded
by Myer S. Isaacs (1841-1904) in 1857 -- a weekly espousing the cause of
traditional Judaism. Another journal published in New York City at that
time was "Jeshurun," which called itself "An Organ for the Furtherance of
Jewish Orthodoxy," and there was also "The Purim Gazette."

There might have been other established English-language Jewish papers and
journals published in New York in 1903, and the microfilm collections of the
Dorot branch of the New York Public Library and Hebrew Union's Library,
should have microfilms on all these. (Hebrew Union's libararies in
Cincinatti and Los Angeles also hold these collections.) Reading through
them is a treat!

At the IAJGS conference in August I'll be giving a talk on historical
newspaper research called "Jews in the News," which will delve into these
English language Jewish newspapers published throughout the United States in
more detail, along with explaining how to look for your ancestors in the
major papers-- New York Times, L.A. Times, Hartford Courant, Chicago
Tribune, Atlanta Constitution, etc. in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Most researchers are surprised to discover that even their less prosperous
immigrant ancestors made appearances in these papers, and that newspaper
research is a fruitful resource for genealogists that is often overlooked.

A Miracle 64 years later #general

I am very new to the digest and the positive help I have gotten has
been unbelievable I have another favor to ask if anybody knows how I can get
a book called Safer Minhas Aron written by Rabbi Aron Arak. I really would
love to have this book. Before I knew this place existed about 2
months ago I decided to look up people on my messenger service, that I had just
gotten. It was like a new toy and no one has it that I know. I had seen some
PoTs in Yad Vashem which didn't add up, one boy age 14 that had died in
Treblinka had a name which also didn't make sense and unknown to me was
the submitters name and it was submitted in 1990 in Hebrew. The whole family
had had died in Treblinka mother father and children, so who would put in
this name. I didn't know at the time that there were mistakes on the PoTs I
learned that in here. I recognized the other submitters of pots put in Yad
Vashem by cousins for this family but not this name. Also I had been told by
Shalom a cousin of my fathers that one of his brothers and his whole
family was dead. Anyway I put in the submitters name and the country Israel and
wrote about 25 messages simply stating. I am doing a family tree, do you
know these names. I got about 3 responses just to say no. One lady called
me a few days later that now she also wants to look for her families roots.
Then I changed the spelling and instant messaged another 20 or so
people I lost track. Finally one of my no responses said I will find this person
for you. I gave him my email address and I got an email. To make a long
story short. 64 years later on Yom Hazikron which was a perfect day. I
spoke to him in Israel. He had put in the PoT for his uncle and grandparents.
His mother was a kid when they had taken away her family. She knew that the
whole family had died and she was the only one left so she never searched
and she never would talk about it . The reason I didn't recognize the name is
that his mother had married. So thanks to the instant messenger
service I was able to find another member of my family.
