descendants of Mordecai M. NOAH #general

Jonathan D. Sarna <sarna@...>

An Israeli film-maker has contacted me seeking descendants of
Mordecai M. NOAH. I know that a family named LAWRENCE descended
from NOAH, but do not know how to locate them. Does anybody
have any information or suggestions?

Mordecai NOAH (1785-1851) was born in Philadelphia and died in
New York. He married Rebecca Esther JACKSON. They had seven
children, four of whom married and had offspring. Aside >from
LAWRENCE, the following additional names appear among Noah's
descendents as listed by Malcom Stern:
BOOTH, TURNER, De FLEURY and BALDWIN.

Many thanks in advance for your help! Please reply off-line to

Recording of Birth in Belzer Rebbe entourage during WWI #general

Shlomo Katz <SKatz@...>

If I am not mistaken, the Belzer Rebbe's sojourn in Hungary during World
War I was spent in Munkatch, which is today not in Hungary but in
Ukraine (Mukachevo).
When the Rebbe returned to Galicia, he did not return to Blez, but first
settled in Oleszyce until about 1925, in my wife's great-grandfather's
house. (His name was Yisrael Vogel. His cousin Shulim Vogel was the
gabbai/secretary of the previous and current Belzer Rebbes) Some 20th
century Oleszyce records are available. What was your relative's name?

mtDNA Hg K1a9 #dna

Steven R. Colson <stevecolson@...>

Aside >from the thoughts of the pundits, has anyone considered the
location of origin of the mtDNA Hg K1a9?

My mtDNA is of the K1a9 haplogroup and my oldest known matriarch was
born in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyy. Other K1a9 genetic cousins tend to
be >from Romania and Poland. I am of the opinion that the K1a9
matriarch originated in Poland and her descendents dispersed along
Carpathian trade routes. This Hg does not show in Western European
Ashkenazim.

Any thoughts?

Recording of Birth in Belzer Rebbe entourage during WWI #general

My father's father was the Shochet to the Belzer Rebbe for some period
of time (as was his father before him, etc.) until he gave it up
supposedly in favor of his brother who was more comfortable
slaughtering animals. i do not know what year this was. I do know that
the Rebbe was in Hungary during WWI at the time of what was my father's
birth. Assuming the Rebbe's Shochet traveled with him, and assuming his
father was still the Shochet, this would mean that my father was born
in Hungary. Would births in this entourage have been recorded with
authorities in Hungary if they were recorded? Would they have waited
till they returned to Galicia? If Hungary, are 20th century Hungarian
records accessible? How?

Thank you.

Canadian Border -Crossing Records (was Need Portland, Maine to Toronto, Canada Immigration Info) #general

Shlomo Katz <SKatz@...>

For the benefit of those seeking relatives in Canada, I wanted to
mention a not-so-obvious utility of the Canadian border-crossing
records. I was seeking information on my great-uncle Mendel Katz who
lived in Montreal. A professional researcher presented me with a list
of Mendel Katz's at various addresses in Montreal, but how could I know
which was mine? It turned out that one of these Mendels (identified by
his address) crossed into New York in 1917 with the declared intention
of visiting his brother-in-law listed as "David Nertes." Since I had a
great-uncle (who would have been Mendel's brother-in-law) whose name was
"David Kertes," I was pretty confident that I had the right Mendel.
Armed with this knowledge, I could now go back and figure out which
Mendel Katz information related to my uncle and which was probably a
different Mendel Katz.
I hope this helps someone.
By the way, I am still seeking Mendel's descendants if he has any.

Searching the birthplace of Ralp SIMANSKY in Poland or Lithuania #general

Leif Eriksson

Ralph (Jerachmieyl ben Yekutieyl) was born 1889 in
Suwalk Gub and left for UK around 1905. But I have not
been able to find out >from which town or shtetl did he
and his family come from.

I have checked the records available at various
on-line sources but not been able to identify him or
his relatives among the SHIMANSKY,SZYMANSKI,
SCZYMANCZYCZ, etc. in Suwalk Gub. or any of the nearby
Districts.

Ralph married Sarah HYMAN in Manchester 1914. His
father in law, David Hyman was born 1865 and came from
Wolkowich. Which probabely was Vilkaviskis in
Lithuania

Ralphs father was called Jekutieyl/Yekusieyl born
about 1860. His mother was called Tsirele (Sura/Sara)?

Ralph had at least one brother by the name of Hanah
(Chane) Itsshke and a sister called (C)Haya (Khaye)
Peshke. Her children were Yishmael Mordekhai and
Yehudah Leybke.

Ralph and Sarah Simansky got two sons in UK, of which
we have information. They were William (Velvel/Volvol
Jitzchak ben Rachmiel), and Leslie (Elazier ben
Rachmael), my father in law.

My hope is that anyone of you may have come across the
records of Ralph or his relatives in Poland/Lithuania.

We are most grateful for any help and guidance enable
us to go further.
