Internment by British. British Army records #general

Regarding the internment of people by the British on the Isle of Man. The
English genealogy magazine "Family Tree Magazine" carried a two-part
article "The internment of enemy civilians in wartime Britain" by Tom Wood
in its November and December 1998 issues.

Also, the very well known and recently-deceased architect Harry Seidler,
who was responsible for several key buildings in Sydney, Australia and
elsewhere, kept a daily diary of his internment by the British. Although
the book is now out of print, second-hand copies are available on the www.
It is "Internment, the Diaries of Harry Seidler May 1940 - October 1941",
edited by Janis Wilton, published by Allen & Unwin 1986. ISBN 0 86861 915
9.

Regarding the WW2 records for the British Army, three years ago I obtained
a copy of my dad's records from:
Army Personnel Centre
HQ Secretariat
Historical Disclosures
Mail Point 400
Kentigern House
65 Brown Stree
Glasgow G2 8EX

At the time their email address was

voter registration, Julius W. RUBIN, Chicago #general

Ruth Hyman <ruth.hyman@...>

Dear Genners:
I have a voter registration >from 1936 for a Julius W. RUBIN, West
Palmer Ave, Chicago. His father was Israel and naturalization info is
included, though this record is very hard to read. This is not the
person I was looking for (he has, however, been found), so if this
"belongs" to anyone else, I'll be happy to send it to you.

JRI-Poland appoints Area Shtetl CO-OP coordinator for Prussian Region #general

Hadassah Lipsius <kesher@...>

Jewish Records Indexing - Poland is pleased to announce that Roger Lustig
of Princeton, NJ has become the Prussia Area Shtetl CO-OP coordinator.

Roger is uniquely qualified to take on this role. Fluent in German and
very knowledgeable about all Prussian records, Roger has not only already
indexed many German-language LDS films for JRI-Poland, but has also
previously handled quality control responsibilities for the work of many
other volunteers in this area.

Anyone with an interest in the towns in the former German
areas of Poland is urged to contact Roger at: julierog@...

There are two main sources for Jewish records in the vital records of
the former German area of Poland.

Jewish only records
~~~~~~
There are LDS (Mormon) microfilms of Jewish vital records for more than
240 towns in the former German territories. Indexing these records is a
key component of JRI-Poland's goal to provide indices of all of the
records in the more than 2000 LDS microfilms of Poland and places now
or formerly in Poland. Roger's primary efforts will be concentrating
on these records.
Mixed Jewish and non-Jewish Civil Records
~~~~~
There are many hundreds of microfilms that cover the years >from 1874 -
ca. 1883 mixed vital records (Jewish and non-Jewish).
If you are interested in these records, contact prussia_mix@...

The later civil records, ca 1884 to 1905, are in various branches of
the Polish State Archives and are being indexed as part of the PSA
project for each of the branches. Information about the records for your
town(s) may be found in the Polish State Archive PRADZIAD database

Suvalk, Russia #general

Richie Small <Richard_Small45@...>

I was recently able to identify the town, Suvalk, Russia, where my
Grandmother and her siblings were born. Russia owned this area at the time
of their births, but I believe it is located today in the northeastern part
of Poland. I know each of their names, year of birth, and year of
immigration to America. I have all the information I need about them after
they arrived in America. If possible, I would like to find out more about
them and prior generations in Eastern Europe. Can you give me any advice on
how I should proceed?

Genners,
I am back after a long absence. The recovery of my grandfather
Nusen/Nathan STURMAN's immigration papers and the passenger data
from Ellis Island and the Yad Vashem records revealed that I had
been searching the wrong district. My STURMAN family did indeed
come >from Teplik, Podolia, Vinnitsa Oblast, very near Uman,
Kiev, as several fellow researchers had suggested. Lilian MAAS
for one was right, it seems. Nusen STURMAN's wife Rose KAISERMAN
came >from Byalostok according to the recollection of my late
uncle Benjamin STURMAN, one of Nathan's sons.

Re: Value of 400 rubles in 1906 #ukraine

Jeremiah Wilton <jwilton@...>

Wow that really helps. I compared some of the food prices to prices at my
local supermarket:

400 rubles = 1212Lb butter = $3500
400 rubles = 2222 doz eggs = $3500
400 rubles = 1600 qt oil = $5000
400 rubles = 800 chickens = $6000

Average value of 400 1905 rubles in 2006 US$: 4500

That makes US2006$11.25 per 1905 Ruble using these few examples. However,
when compared to wages, it looks pretty grim for the relatively well-paid
steel founder listed. This conversion factor has him receiving the
equivalent of US2006$540/month. I guess this can tell us something about
life in Russia at the turn of the last century.

Thanks again.
