ozv. is widow and for Kaunitz the given name I would guess, might be Aron, but part of the paint is not good visible. Aron was in the past a popular name.
Best regards Gabor Hirsch Esslingen, Switzerland P.S. I do not think that full name, city or country of residence adds any valuable information to the mails, because in the majority the senders name is in the header and the eMail might give also information of the country of origin (ch for switzerland, hu for Hungary etc.). I make this remark as my original mail was returned with the following comment: **************** Your message was rejected by the list moderator because you did not include your full name and city or country of residence. A copy of the rejected message is included below. H-SIG Moderator **************** At the same time there were also 3 other without city or country or even without full name. On the otherside I would also appreciate if not an anonym Moderator would sign the comments. Best regards Gabor Hirsch Moderator: Messages will not be approved for archiving without names. Those City or country of residence is highly recommended in order to provide information that will allow H-SIG subscribers to provide useful advice to those who send messages.

Obtaining NYC Death Records
#general
ZIP908@...
I want to add one reminder to Ira Leviton's response regarding obtaining
copies of a recent NYC death record. If you are making your request by mail, do not forget to include a copy of your government issued photo ID. I somehow missed that instruction the first time, and after waiting 3 weeks for my grandmother's death certificate, got a notice that I had to reapply because I had not included that ID. If you apply in person, as I did the second time, you have to present the actual photo ID - a copy is not accepted. Also, as the reason for making the request, I had indicated "family genealogy" on the application, and there didn't seem to be a problem. That could be because, as the granddaughter, I was entitled to a copy. Laurel Presser Manalapan, NJ

Has anyone successfully searched Nevek Name?

Leslie Weinberg <lbw50@...>
I have been trying for months to register on and to search
Klarsfeld's Nevek Names site, and nothing happens, I simply wind up with the original screen. I tried on a Mac and then on a PC, figuring maybe the Mac had an issue, which does sometimes happen on some sites. I have emailed three times about the problem, and have not gotten a response. This is really important to me, since two of the names which appear on a llist of Stuthoff victims may be >from my family. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Leslie Weinberg Searching Reisz (Reis, Reiss), Oradea, Romania, Szegal, Oradea, Romania, Eisen, Tyczyn, Poland and Oradea, Romania, Blumenberg, Tyczyn, Poland, Iram, Tyczyn and Praybyszowka, Poland, November, Oradea, Romania

Mt. Zion (NY) Database
#general
A. E. Jordan
I know there has been discussion about the dates in the Mt. Zion (located in
Queens, NY) database already, but I wanted to add a word of caution to anyone trying to solely use that database for their research. It is wonderful that the cemetery put their records on line (more should do the same), but I just finished comparing their online data to my database of five plots in the cemetery. The results were not great -- beyond the generic dates, I found names that were incorrect, and most of all people that were missing for the cemeteries online database. One would hope the cemeteries data was complete but I can tell you that my data was developed >from maps of Mt. Zion's plots as well as walking each of the plots and photographic the stones. (This was done for the Courlander plots only.) Next I will be comparing the data >from Mt. Carmel and Mt. Hebron also both in Queens, NY to their online databases. If anyone is interested in can let you know the outcome of those comparisons. I offer this as a caution only and not as to denigrate the wonderful effort of having these databases available. Talsi, Courland's first lending library

Has anyone every heard about their being a lending library established in the
1800s in Talsi in Courland (modern day Latvia)? Speaking with a cousin last evening on the phone she told me her family established Talsi's first lending library. I am curious to know if there is anyway to establish the facts on this story? Thanks. Allan Jordan

Looking for Mira Segal Sefer and/or Asher Segal in Haifa, Israel
#general
ZIP908@...
I am trying to obtain the address, in Haifa, Israel, of my cousin Mira SEFER
(or SCHEFFER). Her husband is Zimi or Zeev. Mira's parents were Saul and Rifka SEGAL, also of Haifa (I'm not sure either of them are still alive). Although I'm a little hazy on the relationship (unfortunately, the family members here in the US who had been in contact with the Israeli branch of our family are no longer alive), I believe that Rifka's mother, and my grandmother, were sisters. My grandmother's maiden name was Routtenberg (although I have also seen it as Rotman and Roitman). The family was originally >from Romania. I would also like to obtain the address of Mira's brother, Asher Segal, who may be in either Israel or the United States (he is listed in an on-line US phone directory but the phone number given is not a number currently in use). Any information as to a current address or phone number for any of my cousins would be greatly appreciated. I can provide their last known Haifa addresses, if that would be helpful, but those are at least 10 years old. Please respond privately. Thank you. Laurel Presser Manalapan, NJ, US zip908@aol.com

Celia Male <celiamale@...>
I am delighted to say that the list of Austria-Czech attendees
has now reached 30. I know that other A-C siggers will be present but they will be wearing *different hats*. This is completely understandable because of the history and scope of the Habsburg Empire up to 1918. I will send out the complete list in the next day or so. So here are our four latest attendees: 27. Georgia Haken of Danbury, Conn. wrote <"My interest is the large PROPPER family who lived <in the 1840?-1880's> in Laun, Saaz, Teplice, Krusovice and Prague and later <1920> in Bubentsch. And I have recently added the PROBER-GOLD and ZINGER families who were in Vienna >from the early 1900's to 1938 when they moved to the US. The PROBER-GOLDS were transplants >from Tarnopol. 28. Fred Davis, Medfield, Mass. Past-President, Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston 29. Suzy Boehm [US] will be at the conference for part of the time. Most likely just on Wednesday.
