Re: Opinion Survey - Facial Features Recognition #general

Gloria Berkenstat Freund

I believe the website Ben Forman is referring to is www.myheritage.com .
Gilad Japhet, the CEO of this company, will be giving a presentation
entitled, "Exciting New Genealogy Technologies: Face Recognition and Super
Search," at the 26th IAJGS Conference on Sunday, August 13th, 2006 from
1:15pm to 2:30pm. He will explore how face recognition technology can
benefit genealogical research, as well as other features of his new software
program.

I have no financial interest in this company.

You can visit the Conference website at www.jgsny2006.org to learn more
about this lecture.

Hi Genners

A facial recognition database does exist, it has been developed I think
in Israel and I have visited the website twice, it is a subscription
based site but to prove the technology they offer a free test where you
can upload a picture of a celebrity and it recognises them, or tells you
which celebrity they most closely match. Unfortunately I can't remember
the address or name of the site.
Perhaps someone else can?

Re: KOHEN surnames-an anecdote #general

Stan Goodman <SPAM_FOILER@...>

One of my KOPELMAN relatives decided he was a Cohen, because he found a
photo on the internet of the oldest extant Jewish gravestone in Eastern
Europe and the name thereon was: Yaakov KOPELMAN. The stone designates the
deceased as a Cohen. Since an authority on my family says that all the
KOPELMAN's are related, it's odd that only this one was a Cohen. Perhaps a
Cohen married a KOPELMAN girl and the authorities made him take his wife's
surname as was often the case when no civil marriage took place.
Varda Epstein
Efrat, Israel
"Kopel" is a kinnui for Ya'akov (the final consonant turning into a B in
German, then a P, and with the usual Yiddish diminutive suffix; the syllable
"-man" is added for whatever decorative purpose, I suppose. There is no
reason to believe a priori that any two KOPELMAN families are related, or
that either of them are kohanim.

Can anyone help me trace what happened to this family, >from 1948 onward,
and what does RCAMC stand for ?
Jonathan, I can't tell you what happened after 1948, but I checked
the Montreal vital records held by the Jewish Genealogical Society of
Montreal (http://jgs-montreal.org/vital) and I found a Joseph Berman,
son of Louis Berman and Rachel Rubin who was born on January 31,
1919. In fact, his birth was registered twice, once just after his
birth, and again after the birth of his brother Gershon in 1925.
There was another brother, Wolphe, born in 1920 registered at the
same time (such late registrations were very common in Montreal).

Assuming that this was the correct Joseph, his birth date may help
you trace the family.

I have had good success dealing with legal and medical professional
associations and licensing departments. His name is relatively
common, but with the birth date (if it is the right one), you may be
successful. Doreen Berman is a bit less common, so a search for that
name may be useful - sometimes even a simple Google search is useful.
