It's not another spelling, but in a sense another way of putting it.
"Lomzhinskaya" is the nominative case of the adjective formed >from
"Lomzha", and in this case refers to Lomzha Gubernya. "Lomzhinskoy" is
the form used in several declension cases of this adjective (here
probably the locative).

All we know is that her name is Rachel
and she lives in Kibbutz Ma'aleh Ha'Chamisha. This Rachel would be related to
us through the KREINES family. Does anybody want to help me find this woman?
I know I haven't given you much to go on but I would appreciate anyone's
help! Hopefully there aren't too many Rachels on this kibbutz!

Thank you in advance.

The easiest way for you, with fewest people in the loop to delay and distort
messages, and involving the least imposition on others, would be to drop a
line by paper post to:

Secretary
Kibbutz Ma'aleh haH.amisha
Israel

And ask, giving as much information as you have. I am certain that the
Secretary will post a copy of your letter on a bulletin board in the dining
hall, and perhaps take other measures as well.

Announcing the Obermayer German Jewish History Awards for 2007 #general

Arthur Obermayer <obermayer@...>

The German-Jewish Community History Council, the German Jewish Special
Interest Group of JewishGen, and the Berlin Parliament are pleased to
announce their Call for Nominations for the annual Obermayer German
Jewish History Awards to be given to non-Jewish Germans who have made
extraordinary contributions to preserving vestiges of former Jewish life
in their local communities, including historical records, cultural
material, cemeteries and synagogues. Thousands of Germans have carried
out such activities as volunteers because they feel it is the right
thing to do - the preservation of Jewish material is one of the few ways
in which they can respond constructively to their country's horrible
past. This award provides Jews throughout the world with the opportunity
to recognize and honor German individuals who, in many cases, have
devoted their lifetimes to such important endeavors.

The deadline for submission of nominations is September 20, 2006.

Many of you previously submitted worthy nominations. Those nominees who
have already received Certificates of Commendation are prime candidates
for this year's awards, and will only require updating of the submissions.

This will be the seventh year for such awards, which will be given in
January 2007. Each awardee and their spouse will be invited on an all
expenses paid trip to Berlin to receive the award at the elegant Plenary
Chamber of the Abgeordnetenhaus, the home of the Berlin Parliament. The
honorees will receive a framed certificate and an honorarium to be used
for the furtherance of their work. Awardees' contributions will be
described to attendees and to the local, national and international news
media.

These awards have in the past received extensive coverage in American
newspapers, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Miami
Herald, and the Boston Globe. It has also received coverage by the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the Associated Press, and a great many German
daily and weekly newspapers, as well as specific articles in American
Jewish weeklies, as well as numerous overseas newspapers, such as
Ha'aretz and the Jerusalem Post.

If you know someone who may be appropriate for nomination, further
information -- including the Call for Nominations and profiles of
previous award winners and the jury -- can be obtained at:

http://www.obermayer.us/award

You may obtain a hard copy of the Call for Nominations by sending an
email to:

germanaward@...

or a letter to the German-Jewish Community History Council, 239 Chestnut
Street, West Newton, MA 02465 USA or to Lother Funke, Referat Protokoll,
Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin, D-10111 Berlin-Mitte Germany.

Marjorie Rosenfeld <marjorierosenfeld@...>

Elena Aschkenasi asked how to find information about her family >from Lisko
and Przemysl, noting that she had been unable to find Lisko in Poland.

Lisko is quite easy to find with Google. It's a district in south-eastern
Poland, also a sub-district, though I think it may now be spelled Lesko.
See:

http://www.pgsa.org/Inter/galizien.htm

You can also find interesting information about a town called Lesko at:

http://www.poland-tourism.pl/r1.asp

There's information there, too, about Przemyl.

You can search at Miriam Wiener's Routes to Roots Foundation to see what
records exist for Lesko or Przemyl (or any shtetl, for that matter). The
search page is at:

http://www.rtrfoundation.org/search.asp

Just put in your town name and then click on Search. You'll get a list of
records. The record types appearing in blue are links. Click on the blue
letters and you'll get the years covered by any existing records.

Hope this helps. There seems to be quite a bit for Lesko.

Seeking descendants of Jacob DeVRIES / Julia KATZ #general

Marty <mdmajor@...>

I am searching for descendants of Jacob DeVRIES (b Amsterdam,
Holland bet 1836 and 1845, son of Isaac DeVRIES and Bertha
HARING) and Julia KATZ (b ca 1848 Hesse Cassel) who were married
in New York City 6 Nov 1870 by Rabbi Moritz Tintner of
Congregation Shaare Rachamim, NY City.

Children I know of are:
Elizabeth b 14 Apr 1872 NY City, d 17 Feb 1873 NY City
Joseph b 26 May 1874 NY City, d 27 Jul 1941 Takoma Pk, MD
Isaac (aka Gilbert Isaac) b 22 Dec 1877 NY City, d 24 Jun 1940
Cleveland, OH, Buried Mayfield Cemetery, Cleveland.

Julia KATZ DeVRIES died in NY City 15 Apr 1891. Jacob DeVRIES
died in NY City 18 Dec 1892. Elizabeth, Julia and Jacob are
buried in Washington Cemetery, Cemetery 1, Post 72. The burial
society they belonged to was New York Lodge #4.
Jacob’s occupation was a cigar maker.
Their residence in 1870 was 185 3rd St., Brooklyn (?), 1880 was 2
Avenue B, NYC; 1890-91 - 15 Second Avenue, NYC. Jacob’s residence
in 1892 was 13 Avenue B, NYC.
By 1900 Isaac (Gilbert) was living with his cousin Isaac KLEIN
(md to Nellie STEMPLE) at 50 East 104th St, NYC. Isaac married
Bertha KLEIN, daughter of Abraham KLEIN and Therese STERN on 24
Jan 1904.

They had the following children:
Julian DeVRIES b 19 Dec 1904, NYC; d Nov 1994, Phoenix, AZ.
Terese DeVRIES b ca 1907-1908, NYC, d ? Still unmarried in 1952
when living in Arlington, VA.

Isaac, Bertha, Julian and Terese eventually settled in Cleveland
where Bertha’s sisters and brothers had moved.

Joseph DeVRIES was a physician. He married Mabel WRIGHT in 1898
in Washington, DC.

They had the following children:
Joseph DeVRIES, Jr. b 28 Nov 1898, Washington DC, d 26 Mar 1899
Sybilla DeVRIES b 3 Feb 1901, Washington DC, d 6 Apr 1907
Garrett DeVRIES b 2 Jul 1910, Chicago, IL, d 15 Aug 1932, Long
Island, NY
Van Beuren DeVRIES b 28 Aug 1912, Brooklyn, NY, d 10 Apr 1968,
Town of Tonawanda, Erie, NY

My grandfather was Joseph. Many years ago, a cousin of my Dad’s
on his mother’s side told me that Joseph had brothers. The 1890
census would have been a huge help for this information but alas,
that is not to be.

Right now I am waiting for the marriage record of Isaac and
Bertha to arrive and hope that perhaps there may be a clue there.

I have checked The Family Tree of the Jewish People and Gilbert
I. DeVries is there, but I did not receive a response >from the
submitter of his information.

I would like to know if Julian DeVRIES ever married and if Joseph
and Isaac DeVRIES had any other brothers.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, I would appreciate your
help. Please respond privately.

Thank you.
