ZIMMAK & STECKELMACHER holocaust testimonies in the Wiener Library, London

KOENIGSBUCH family has sent me this URL: microformguides.gale.com/data/download/1016000R.pdf It does work but not directly. It is the listing of the archives of the Wiener Library, London re Holocaust testimonies. I noticed quite a few Vienna/Prague references in it and also and there is a ref. to Leonhard ZIMMAK [Sweden] re Commandant Seck translated >from the German and Mrs Ernst STECKELMACHER document too: Eyewitness accounts of the Rabbi Dr STECKELMACHER and his wife in Germany and France 1933-1945 - 16 pages Photographs include: Irma and Karl NEUMANN and son Zdenko - family photos >from Czechoslovakia Other names which caught my eye connected to our SIG area were KULKA, Else KAFKA and Hans KLEIN [Vienna] There is no index and you have to trawl through the many pages using your magnifier and "find" function! Tragic, but potentially valuable. Celia Male [U.K.]

I visited with my son and two youngest grandchildren Prostejov and its cemetery on the way after our roots, less than a week ago! The names mr. Lonstein sent, some of the people i knew personally, or I knew the families. Jacob and Clothilde Steckelmacher were my grandparents. I knew some members of mister Lonsteins family Gruenhut. Back in stormy Israel, Maud Michal Beer.

Argentina postal code
#general
Carlos Glikson
Vera Finberg asked
I need assistance in determining a postal code in Buenos Aires.Vera, to find the correct postal code the door number is needed, and I understand you can not publish full addresses in the forum. With street name and door number, you can find the postal code online: 1. Go to http://www.correoargentino.com.ar/cpa/ and click on "Consulte su CPA" - (consult your Argentine Postal Code) 2. In "Seleccione una Provincia" (select a province) choose "Capital Federal" for Buenos Aires City. 3. Click on "Continuar" 4. In the new screen, at "Nombre de la calle:" (street name) type Dragones. 5. At "Altura": (Door number) type the door number. 6. Click on "Buscar CPA". If you make a mistake with the street name or the door number, or if you selected the wrong location for that address, you will get a message reading "Disculpe, puede que el nombre de la calle esté mal escrito o la altura sea incorrecta o la calle pertenezca a una localidad vecina...." mentioning these possibilities and then asking you to check the data and try again. A door number is 3 or 4 digits long. Very exceptional cases for a record-long avenue have 5 digits. Be sure not to include extra numbers after the door number. They may be the floor or apartment number... Best wishes, Carlos Glikson Buenos Aires

New LitvakSIG elections to be held at LitvakSIG meeting August 14
#lithuania
Jrbaston
Because the resignation earlier today of LitvakSIG President Davida
Noyek Handler changes the candidates in the LitvakSIG election, and because some questions have been raised about the procedures of this election, the majority of the members of the LitvakSIG Board have voted to declare the election currently taking place null and void, and to re-schedule the election for the LitvakSIG meeting at the IAJGS Conference, Monday, August 14 at 4:45 p.m. This will be a completely new election, conducted under the provisions of the original LitvakSIG by-laws. It will be a completely open ballot, a tabula rasa, and no candidates (including current Board members) will automatically be on the new ballot. Nominations will be accepted on the floor of the meeting and by e-mail to Election Chair Eden Joachim at <esjoachim@optonline.net> before the meeting. Before the meeting, members may nominate themselves or other members who agree in writing (email or otherwise) to serve. As required by the original bylaws, members at the meeting will vote for members of the LitvakSIG Board, and the Board will choose its officers at the Board meeting. All dues-paying members in good standing who are present at the meeting may vote in this election. All candidates must be members of LitvakSIG. Those who have not yet had the opportunity to join LitvakSIG may do so at the beginning of the meeting. Any further details of this election will be posted by the Election Chair in the next few days. Please direct any questions about the election to Eden Joachim at <esjoachim@optonline.net> To see the original LitvakSIG bylaws, go to http://data.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.dll?jg~jgsys~sigspop and enter the word bylaws, searching LitvakSIG and displaying messages in forwards order. The messages of August 5 and 6, 1998 contain the original bylaws and additional language posted the next day. Judy Baston, for the LitvakSIG Board

Extracts of Vital Records of Jewish entries from the Civil Registers for Tuchola and Sepolna Krajenskie
#poland
Hadassah Lipsius <kesher@...>
The next update to the JRI-Poland database will include extracts of
Jewish entries >from the Civil Registrations for the former West Prussian towns of Tuchel and Zempelburg (today Tuchola and Sepolno Krajenskie). Tuchola is located at 53o35', 17o51' and Sepolno Krajenskie is located at 53o27', 17o31'. The two towns are South West of Gdansk and North of Bydgoszcz. These entries were prepared by the JRI-Poland Shtetl CO-OP program under the leadership of the Monica Leonards, Z"L. In the spirit of cooperative research that is the hallmark of the JRI-Poland project, Monica, before her untimely passing, worked quietly and diligently to prepare the entries for these two Prussian towns. When she knew that her illness was terminal, Monica made sure to complete the extractions and submitted the completed files for addition to our database. Monica expressed to me that she did not want to waste all the work that she put into to creating the extracts. Monica was selfless in her desire to share her work with other researchers without fanfare and glory. Monica's work is one example of projects undertaken by JRI-Poland < www.jri-poland.org > since 1998 to index both the Jewish records and the mixed Prussian civil records (Standesamt) LDS microfilm collection of the LDS. JRI-Poland also has indexed records of Prussian towns not microfilmed by the LDS found at the PSA Branch archives located in Poznan, Torun, Olsztyn and Bydgoszcz. May Monica Leonards' family be proud of her efforts and may her selflessness be an example to all of us. Please consider indexing the records for your towns. Templates and sample indices will be provided by Roger Lustig, the JRI-Poland Area Shtetl CO-OP coordinator for the Prussian Region. Roger will be pleased to provide the necessary guidance for your data entry. For more information, please contact Roger at: prussia_mix@jri-poland.org Polish State Archives Project ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The later civil records, ca 1885/1889 to 1905 were not filmed by the LDS and will be indexed at various branches of the Polish State Archives as part of the PSA project. Information about the surviving records for your town(s) can be found in the Polish State Archive PRADZIAD database at: http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.eng.php A full list of mixed civil records (Standesamt) may be downloaded if you go to www.jri-poland.org/psa/psagdansk.htm and click on the link Hadassah Lipsius JRI-Poland Associate Director

LitvakSIG history and a note from Davida Noyek Handler
#lithuania
Davida Noyek Handler <dnhiowa@...>
Dear LitvakSIG Members and Digest Readers:
Most of you know that I co-founded LitvakSIG, Inc., in 1997. Our initial meeting was held at the IAJGS Conference in Paris. This move grew >from the beginnings of the NW Lithuanian SIG, founded by Ed Cohler in Jerusalem in 1994. We incorporated as a 501(c)(3) and, since then, we have all seen LitvakSIG grow - >from a small group of people interested in acquiring and translating documents to learn more about our Lithuanian ancestors - to a huge organization producing the largest number of searchable translated Lithuanian-Jewish records on the internet, an internet discussion group, and an Online Journal. I am very proud of the progress we have made, and especially of the team who have made this possible. Over the past nine years, they have become my colleagues and close friends. Nine years, however, is a long time to head up any organization - even one as close to my heart as LitvakSIG. Although I look forward to working on some special new projects and intend to remain active, I have notified the board that because of health issues, I will be resigning as President. I look forward to LitvakSIG's continued growth. Davida Noyek Handler MODERATOR'S NOTE -- LitvakSIG extends to Davida our deepest thanks for her nine years of love and commitment to LikvakSIG.

FRANKEL from SLATINA, Olt County Romania
#romania
Gayle Sherburne <gssherburne@...>
Dear All,
I am seeking information about the Jewish Community which once existed in Slatina, Olt County Romania. This is in the area known as "Oltenia", and in the 1800's was part of "Romania Mare", before Transilvania was officially a part of Romania. Slatina is between Craiova and Bucharest. Despite much searching I cannot find a trace of the Jews >from Slatina or Olt County. My grandfather Jacques Frankel was born there in 1886. He had a brother Roland born in 1881. The parents were named Isaac and Rosa Frankel. There may have been other siblings as well. Their address was "Bucharest Street." Roland became a naturalized British citizen in 1909 and changed his name to Franklin. Jacques also lived there apparently but later immigrated to American and was also known as Franklin. In between Romania and their immigrations the family was in Cairo for a period of time, and probably also in Palestine. I have no clue what happened to the other family members, including the parents. All information clues and suggestions gratefully accepted. Thanks Gayle Sherburne Timisoara Romania
