An address in the 1860 Federal Census for the Town of Oyster Bay, New York State #general

e l

Hello kind people:

I found my ancestor, a renter, and his family in the 1860 Federal Census. He
only became a citizen much later. All persons in the Town of Oyster Bay are
listed as having a Glen Cove postal address at that time, and the definition
of the Election District is coequal with the Town (township). Can anyone
suggest a source that would list my ancestor's address in the Town of Oyster
Bay for 1860. He kept a fancy store, meaning that he sold trimmings for
ladies dresses and thread. I have not yet found any advertising literature
on him. Can you suggest where to look for any advertisements at that time.

So far as I am aware, the first City Directory for Queens County appeared in
1864, at least a year after my ancestor left the Town of Oyster Bay in New
York State. However, when I looked at that city directory, it was not clear
to me that it included the Town of Oyster Bay. As you probably know, the
1860 Federal census does not list street or even village locations, and
there appears to have been no extant city directory. Oyster Bay became the
northernmost of the three Towns in the newly-formed County of Nassau in
1899, long after the subject of this inquiry. My ancestor appears in city
directories in the early 1860s in Manhattan and also in the 1850s before he
moved to the Town of Oyster Bay. He had relatives in Manhattan but, so far
as I know, none in the Town of Oyster Bay. I believe that the Federal
records of Civil War taxes on income and watches, etc. is held in the
National Archives only for periods beginning 1863 onward so that does not
help. I found him there in those records in New York City in 1863.

Apparently, business was not so good, or he missed his family and social
support group because he moved back to Manhattan in or before 1863. The
newly operating Long Island Railroad would have greatly shortened the travel
time, but the family would still have had to stay overnight on a visit to
see relatives in Manhattan because the crossing >from Long Island to
Manhattan would have required a ferry trip. Since my ancestor had little
contact with Jews in Oyster Bay/Glen Cove, can anyone suggest what contacts
he might have established that would have left a paper trail still extant
today? He was Orthodox at the time. I know where he was buried in 1905 but
that gives no clue to his time in Queens County, NY 45 years earlier.

Any advice that you can offer in placing my ancestors at a specific address
in 1860 would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Edward Luft

American Line Records #general

My elusive relative was deported >from NY to Cherbourg on the SS Philadelphia
in June 1914. He was deemed physically unfit. I've been unable to find a
trace of him since. I contacted the French archives but they don't have
passenger records but said that the shipping lines kept their own.

My question: Does anyone know where the records for the American Line are
kept or even if they survived? I'm really trying to find out what happened
to him after he was returned to Cherbourg.

Can't locate information from index card #lithuania

Ava <spirit-images@...>

The national archives sent me a copy of an index card, because
naturalization records were unreadable. The index card states that Mark
A Sulkowitch arrived July 1, 1883 in New York, NY. It says he was born
Oct 16, 1875. I thought it would be easy to go to the Morse site and
find information about his arrival in the US, but I can find nothing at
all using the information they gave me.

He should have been traveling with his mother and siblings. The only
thing I can think of is that the last name is very different on the
manifest. Does anyone have any ideas on which direction to go in to
find the information?

Tracking Benjamin Kesselmann #france

Jackye Sullins <jsullins@...>

Recently, it was suggested here that I contact the French archives about my
relative. He was deported back to Cherbourg on the American Line
Philadelphia in 1914 because he was deemed physically unfit. He had been
living in Paris but was probably still a Russian subject. The archives have
focused on the passenger list which they say the shipping lines maintained
and they don't have.

My question is: What would happen to someone after they landed back in
Cherbourg and left the ship? Would they be allowed to stay in France?
Would they have to register somewhere or could they just disappear into the
night?

I would appreciate any insight or being pointed in the right direction.

Seeking descendants of Louis and Hannah KORN #general

Sharon R. Korn <s.r.korn@...>

My husband's great-grandparents, Louis and Hannah KORN, immigrated >from in
or near Vienna (Wien), Austria to Manhattan in approximately 1873. He died
in 1887 and she died in 1907. They had a son Peter and 6 daughters,
Elizabeth, Anne, Ida, and Rosie, born approximately 1866 to 1873 in Austria,
and Polly and Mamie, born approximately 1876 and 1878 in Manhattan.
Elizabeth, who was known as Betsy, later Lizzie, married a man with the
surname WALTERS. She was widowed at a young age and may have lived in the
Bronx and taken in roomers. Since she lived for a time with her brother's
family, I doubt that she had children. I do not know the other sisters'
married names or even whether they married. I have information on the son
Peter and his descendants (most of whom I know or have known personally).
If anyone has any information about the daughters and their families or
about Louis and Hannah's siblings and/or parents, please contact me
privately.

I am trying to locate a copy of a book: "She'elot U'Teshuvot: Minchah
Ketannah" written by R. Jechiel HaLevi ROSENFELD, Rabbi in "Winniki"
published in Lemberg in 1892. I know a copy existed in the 60's,
possibly in Hechal Shlomo in Jerusalem as my parents Z"L copied the
introduction, which finally, after 30 years of looking for it, I have
found while doing a very intense search through their remaining papers.
Thank you.
