problems w/ Yad Vashem database #ukraine

taxtroll@...

I was wondering if someone could help me. I've been trying for weeks to
search the Central Database to finish a summary of records mentioning
Opalin, Ukraine (formerly Poland) but every time I try to search, I'm
directed to a IBM Workplace Service Express window. I e-mailed Yad
Vashem a while ago about the problem but got no response. I just tried
it again and apparently my e-mail address is on a spam black list. I
was wondering if other people are having this same problem with the
search engine or if there's someone >from Yad Vashem on this
distribution list who can look into the problem and get back to me.

Thanks

Ok people...i get the point about nicknames, but if
that where the case here why would he show his name as
Jacob Kopyl Frank on official documents. And he always
used all three names. I really do think there has to
be more to this than a nickname. But thanks for the
ideas.

Montifiore's Jerusalem Census #general

amrothman2@...

Hello,

It's been a while since I was on the list and am looking for information
about the Censae that Sir Moses Montifiore took in Jerusalem, I believe
they were taken before 1900. Am wondering if these records are searchable
and if so are they internet searchable?
Where do I access them? Please respond privately.

Thank you

Re: Has Anyone Filled Out FOIA Form G-639, If So Can You Help Me #general

Dear Peter,

I can attest to the fact that NARA on Varick & Houston Streets in Manhattan
has the St. Albans lists incuding those for Detroit, MI, Buffalo, NY,
Niagara Falls, NY and possibly a few others. They are cards on microfilm
indexed by name but in many cases they are difficult to read off the
microfilm machines, difficult but not impossible.

I Know that NARA has manifests and border crossing cards that accompany the
St. Albans Index. I found my grandfather there after some difficulty that
had me bouncing through a good many of them, both cards and ships manifests.
What I don't know >from personal experience is whether the NARA Branch in
Manhattan has those films, as I looked at them while visiting the branch
near Boston.

Derivation of the name "JANKELSOHN" #general

I am interested in the derivation of the surname "JANKELSOHN". The person I
am interested in was born in Latvia around 1875. The name seems to take
several forms, such as JANKELSON, YANKELSON, IANKELZON.
Thank you,

Research in Lithuania/Vilnus #general

Shuman, Carl H

1) I will be visiting Vilnius, Anyksciai and Ukmerge in August. In the
course of reviewing various tax/voter records that I believe are housed in
the Kaunas regional archives and that are summarized in the JewishGen
Lithuania database, there are references to a Smuelis/Shmuila/Shmuyla PAL
and a Dvora PAL. I believe these are my maternal greatgreatgrandparents.
I have also been in contact with the chief archivist for the Lithuanian
State Historical Archives and she has located other state documents housed
in Vilnius that list a Shmuelis/Shmuila/Shmuyla PAL and Tauba PAL. Both
sets of documents list Shmuil/Dvora and Shmuil/Tauba as having resided in
Ukmerge at roughly the same time. Is Tauba a Yiddish form of the Hebrew
Dvora? Could Tauba and Dvora be the same person?

2) Does anyone know if the Jewish cemetery in Ukmerge still exists? My
greatgrandfather, Moshe Yom Tov PAL, is supposed to have been buried there
with his parents.

3) I am trying to determine if there is a marriage record for my
greatgrandfather, Moshe Yom Tov PAL, and my greatgrandmother, Rocha Frieda
BINDER. I do not know for certain but I think they could have been married
in Anyksciai. Moshe Yom Tov was born around 1847 and I believe Rocha
Frieda was about the same age as my greatgrandfather. I don't know how old
they were when they were married but their oldest child was Shifra and she
was purportedly 18 according to the 1892-94 revision list, which means she
would have been born around 1874. I am assuming, therefore, that Moshe Yom
Tov and Rocha Frieda would have been married sometime between 1865 and
1874. I am also trying to determine if there is a death record for Rocha
Frieda BINDER. I believe she died in the 1890's in Anyksciai. There are
apparently no records of her marriage and birth in the Lithuanian State
Historical Archives in Vilnius. Would it be more likely that such
documents would be located in the Kaunas Regional Archives, if they exist
at all? Does anyone know how Jewish marriage records were kept in the
region?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.-Carl H. Shuman

St. Alban's Canadian-US border crossings #general

John Hoenig

Readers might be interested in seeing an article I wrote for
Family Chronicle on the "St. Alban's" border crossing records.
There are several things to note. First, there are two name indexes to
some of the records, a soundex and an alphabetical index. Second, in
addition to crossings >from Candada into the US, there are also ship
manifests for boats arriving in Canadian ports like Halifax and Montreal.
The US Government convinced ships entering Canadian ports to prepare a
separate ship's manifest for travellers who intended to continue on to the US.
These manifests look just like what you see on the Ellis Island website.

As an example of why this is worth pursuing, consider the following.
My father's family came to NY as visitors in 1940 and then had to leave
the country and re-enter to be permanent residents. I knew >from their
citizenship papers that they took the train to Montreal, then turned around
and re-entered the US at Rousses Point, NY. I went to NARA and looked
quickly through one of the name indexes and didn't find them. On another
trip to NYC I decided to try again. This time I found them. I hadn 't
expected to find any new genealogical information but, surprise, there was
one item: under name of closest relative or friend in place >from whence alien
came was listed my grandfather's newphew! Evidently, he had left Hungary
and made it to France. Two years earlier, when my father's family came to
the US as visitors, they had listed their neighbor as their closest
friend or neighbor in France. Now if only I could find out what was the
fate of my grandfather's nephew... He's not in the list of people deported
from France so maybe he survived.
