Paulette Levin wrote to me asking about Ancinas
and whether this was a place in Latvia in 1895. Every Email I have sent her is bouncing back to me. I do wish that everyone posting or sending messages would make sure that their spam programme is not sending back messages to people that they have contacted as it is very frustrating. I have not found a name like this in Latvia but I received information >from a fellow researcher (see below) and as her document says that he came from Russia and Lithuania was part of Russia itmay be the place she is looking for. FALIKOV family from Kilia, Vilkovo, Tarutino in Bessarabia
#romania
ALEX VOLKOV <volkoff@...>
Hi All Genners!
I am looking to FALIKOV family roots in late 19th century or deeper, in three villages (little towns) in Bessarabia, namely Vilkovo, Kilia, Tarutino. FALIKOV last name can be spelled FALICOV, FALICOFF, FALIKOF, FALIKOW or even possibly FALIKS. In Kilia in particular, it has double last name, FALICOV-BANCHIK Places also have different spellings and alternative names, Tarutino has Yiddish name Anchokrak, Vilkovo was called Valcov in older times, and Kilia is also called Chelia In Tarutino, another family I am looking for is GENESSIN. Izhok Genessin, (possibly son of Shaya Genessin) was a father of a large family in Tarutino, related by several ties with FALIKOVs in Vilkovo Other related last names, persons who lived there: BOTOSHANSKY, FRIEDMAN, FIEDELMAN Thanks in advance for any tip or information! Alex Volkov MODERATOR NOTE: For greater success in locating family please go to the JewishGen Family Finder at: www.jewishgen.org/jgff and enter your family names and towns. And please add your place of residence (country, state or city) to your signature. Thank you! Moderator on Duty information, where it can be found by the many thousand who

grateful if everyone could send me their particular ones, and would they also let me know if they are willing to be credited. With thanks Joyce Howard-Edwards

and >from her I learned the ones where stepping over someone made them short (I am 5'1" so...) pulling an ear when you talk of the dead wearing a red 'bendle' to avert the evil eye not sewing ones clothes while wearing them spitting three times (over the left shoulder was favoured) to avert evil KN after nearly everything Sayng Boruch HaShem on occasions too numerous to detail Putting salt in the corners of the room to avert evil As you can see we were kept pretty busy with all of this. Fortunately we didn't have the keys or bed superstitions as well - how would we have coped? All the best Shirley Holton MODERATOR NOTE: This has been a fun thread. I think we will give it until midnight and then no more will be sent out.

My mother would only sew on a button, if I was wearing the garment if I
would chew some cotton at the same time. Another one was we must never share an egg as the only time you do is when you are sitting Shiva. And I always had red ribbon pinned to my vest as a child. Georgina Phillips

Dr. Eleanora Bergman to speak at JRI-Poland Luncheon Aug. 13
#poland
JRI-Poland is delighted to announce that Dr. Eleanora
Bergman, Vice Director of the Jewish Historical Institute (JHI) in Warsaw, will speak at the JRI-Poland luncheon at the IAJGS conference in New York. The luncheon will take place at noon on Sunday, August 13. Deadline to sign up for the luncheon is this Friday, August 4. For those of you who have registered but have not yet signed up for the luncheon, go to the conference website at www.jgsny2006.org then click on "Update Registration" and add the luncheon. Dr. Bergman will speak on the project to index the more than 230,000 Survivor Cards at the JHI. These cards were filled out immediately following World War II by Jews who were in Poland and registered with the various Jewish communal organizations then functioning in Poland. The cards includes town of birth, parents names and other valuable information. We had earlier announced that Yale Reisner and Anna Przybyszewska Drozd of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation Genealogy Project at the Jewish Historical Institute would be speaking at our luncheon, but they recently announced they will not be coming to the conference. We look forward to seeing you at the luncheon on August 13. Stanley Diamond, Executive Director, Jewish Records Indexing-Poland
