How wonderful to read of all these crazy superstitions in other people's
Jewish families. I always thought my mother and family were together the
superstition capital of the world. They came up with superstitions I never
knew were possible - someone out there had real imagination!

Some other examples: Sick people must not wear new clothes. Don't put shoes
on the bed (besides the fact that they might not be clean). A bride must not
sew her own wedding dress.

I'm sure we all know how to ward off the Evil Eye - Pt Pt Pt (three little
spits - the Nanny does them quite well!); say Kein ayn hora; Please G-d;
Chas v-chalila. And so on...

Are we all nodding and smiling yet?

Although my family has no connection that I can find to Eastern Europe (we
are Sephardic), we had the keys on the table superstition and another that
has not been mentioned here yet.
A baby had to have a piece of red ribbon pinned to it's clothing to ward off
the 'evil eye'.

As to Harold's suggestion that, because he lived in Leytonstone, it may
account for his family's lack of superstition, I can only say that I live in
Leytonstone now and there is no lack of superstition around here :-)

Someone mentioned that when a person dies he is placed on the floor with his
feet facing the door.

This reminded me of when I worked for builders merchants and my boss came
back to the office and asked me whether it was true that in a bedroom the
bed must not be placed with the foot of the bed facing the door because it
was a Jewish superstition and they were now having to change the design of
the bedroom to fit in with this custom.

Hi,

I'd like to comment on the facing the door. This is not merely a
superstition, rather it is based on a custom. When a person dies, he
is placed on the floor with his feet facing the door, until the body
is removed. Therefore, it is customary not to face the door, feet
first.

The big one in our family, >from Poland and Belarus, was not stepping
over a person, especially a child. This would cause him/her to stop
growing.

Yesterday I placed a picture of a 1798 tombstone >from Denmark on
ViewMate, asking for help in reading it.

We already received five answers, all incredibly clever and also very
consistent as to what they could read.

So we do not need to trouble more with that stone, we are perfectly
happy with the result.

seeking grave information in Connecticut #general

Paul & Irene Berman <ikpjb@...>

I am seeking information about three individuals buried in the Knesset
Israel section of Ellington Cemetery, Maple Street, Ellington, Connecticut.
I have asked a former area resident to inquire of the community member who
is nominally in charge of the Knesset Israel section at Ellington, but,
unfortunately, he seems to be too busy to check the records or the stones.
Perhaps one of the list members may be able to help in some way.
The persons I am seeking information about are: Charles ASBEL, died in 1957;
Chashe ASBEL, died in 1924; Rachel ASBEL, died 1967.

I'd like to make a correction. Schelly wrote me that KATZAV was Hebrew for
(and not the Hebraicized version of) GHASSEB, both of which mean: butcher.
So, Judith Romney Wegner's surmise is correct: GHASSEB is butcher, as are
KATZAV and KATZOFF.

Expulsion of Jews from France 22 July 1306 #general

Nick <tulse04-news@...>

According to the BBC Religion and Ethics Newsletter the Jews were expelled
from France by King Philip IV on 22 July 1306 (the day after the fast of 9th
Av in the Hebrew calendar - which is on Thursday).

I knew, of course, that the Jews were expelled >from England in 1290. I
hadn't appreciated that a similar fate subsequently happened to French Jews.

See
http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/judaism/history/expulsion_from_france.shtml

[or http://tinyurl.com/kxkbq -- Mod.]

Apparently there was a series of readmittance and reexpulsion until 1294.

This didn't encompass the full area of modern France and there was
subsequent expansion of the kingdom into areas to which they had fled
(Burgundy, Savoy, Dauphiné, Roussillon, and the papal lands at Avignon).
