While it's on topic, the *first* volume has 78 pages of biographical notes on the Rav, although I can't vouch for the availability of the book. There was also an article in Sinai (vol. 84, pg. 61-71) by Prof. Mordechai Eliav 'HaRav Yitzchak Dov HaLevi Bamberger - The Man and His Era'. I suppose an article by N. Bar-Giora (Bamberger) (Sinai, vol. 94) in regards to the prayer the Wurzburger Rav wrote in response to the edict by the German govt. not allowing more than one marriage per household would be of interest. It explains why familes were broken by siblings being sent away to marry, or young marriages ect. in order to avoid the edict. I hope the next step is to reprint the Responsa of The Wurzburger Rav (Yad HaLevi) Best Wishes, Rabbi Yosaif M. Dubovick Betar Illit, Israel

I've just begun researching the SHAPIRO line of my tree, and believe
there are a number of rabbis, including Baruch SHAPIRO (b. 1830s), Shiah Osieja SHAPIRO (b.early 1800s), and Yosele SHAPIRO (b. 1755). I believe they are >from the Bialystock region, but also have some information that indicates Yosele SHAPIRO was a prominent figure in Augustow. Re: Lithuania Related Films at NY Conference

The IAJGS conference is screening two excellent films with Lithuanian
themes: "My Grandfather's House" and "Kupishok: Unto Each Name a Person." These films will be shown in the fourth floor Ziegfield Room. MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE: THE JOURNEY HOME This personal documentary, follows filmmaker Eileen Douglas's determined search to find her grandfather's house in Lithuania, the home he lived in and left behind in 1911 when he fled, at 16, >from Kovno to America to escape the Tsar's Army. Four decades after his death, with only fragments to guide the way, the documentary is Douglas 's attempt to lift the veil of darkness and discover "where it all began." Traveling >from New York City, to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, to her mother's attic in Syracuse, to the homes of relatives and, finally, to the block in Kovno where her grandfather once lived, along the way she unexpectedly unlocks the mystery of stories he never told, discovers the fate of family members lost in the war, learns of the glory that once was Lithuanian Jewry, finds living relatives missing for years in Siberia, and resurrects a family shattered by the traumas of the 20th Century. The documentary weaves together original footage, old family photographs, archival records, translations of old Yiddish letters, archival film footage, family reminiscences, interviews, conversations, and music scored to evoke a vanished era. Produced by Eileen Douglas and Ron Steinman, Directed by Ron Steinman. Monday, August 14th - 8:30PM and Thursday, August 17th - 2:30PM - Both screenings will be with the filmmakers Ron Steinman and Eileen Douglas KUPISHOK; UNTO EACH NAME A PERSON In the aftermath of World War II, Christian midwives in Kupiskis, a small Lithuanian shtetl (village) that was called Kupishok by its Jews, compiled a list of the Jews of the town that were murdered by the German Nazis and their Lithuanian accomplices in the summer of 1941. All of the Jewish men, women and children in the town were herded into a makeshift ghetto and then marched to a cemetery reserved for atheists, where they were shot and buried in unmarked pits. The midwives' list of more than 800 precious names was a secret Mitzvah (good deed) until the Soviets left Lithuania in the early 1990s and a small numbers of survivors and descendants of the town's Jews were allowed to visit the town. On July 13, 2004, more than 50 survivors and descendants of the Jews of Kupishok, ages 9 to 86, now living in the United States, Israel, the UK, Denmark, South Africa and Australia, returned to the town to dedicate a magnificent Wall of Memory, designed and constructed in Washington, D.C. Unlike most other Holocaust memorials in Europe, the Wall of Memory is not in a killing field or cemetery: it is in the center of town, where ordinary citizens, particularly children, see its vital and unforgettable message, portrayed in Lithuanian, Hebrew and English. Co-produced by Ian Rogow and Alec Meyer. Thursday, August 17th - 9:30AM Several people involved in the 2004 trip to Kupishok and the making of this film will be in attendance. Eileen Douglas and Ron Steinman will also be panelists on the "Visual Storytelling" panel on Wednesday, August 16th at 7:30PM. Order forms for "My Grandfather's House" will be available in the Ziegfeld screening room. Pamela Weisberger IAJGS Conference Film Co-Cordinator pweisberger@hotmail.com MODERATOR'S NOTE: Eileen Douglas will also be the speaker at the LitvakSIG luncheon on Tuesday, August 15.

Lomza was a gubernia as well as a city (Not unlike New York, New York.).
JewishGen ShtetlSeeker shows Sol (53 17' 21 31') 65.1 miles W of the city of Lomza and Szla (53 05' 20 58') 88.0 miles W. of Lomza. Poland ceased to exist as a political entity >from the third partition in 1795 until 1918, so a municipality in what we think of as Poland would have been listed in Russia (e.g., Bialystok, Russia). From: elliott <elliottmalkin@gmail.com> Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2006 00:29:34 -0400 X-Message-Number: 1 Dear Bialystok SIG, I have an apparent contradiction in my genealogical records and was hoping that you could help me resolve it. The Ellis Island Ship Manifest (1913) for my great-grandfather Hyman Victor lists his place of birth as "Lomza." He was born in 1883. But his Declaration of Intent (1916) for American citizenship lists "Selie, Russia" as his place of birth. I'm wondering if anyone might know if Selie was a town outside of Lomza or if Lomza was considered a region in addition to a city. Perhaps Selie is the improper spelling. Any advice (and links to maps) would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Elliott Malkin

Hi,
I'd like to comment on the facing the door. This is not merely a superstition, rather it is based on a custom. When a person dies, he is placed on the floor with his feet facing the door, until the body is removed. Therefore, it is customary not to face the door, feet first. The big one in our family, >from Poland and Belarus, was not stepping over a person, especially a child. This would cause him/her to stop growing. Esther GREENBERG nee DRUSKOWITZ/GOLDSHMIDT
#unitedkingdom
Susan Goldsmith
Dear SIG,
I am seeking cousins: the family of Esther GREENBERG, nee DRUSKOWITZ. Esther emigrated >from Lithuania to England with her parents Avraham, a Rabbi and his wife Henne Leia (later Lillian) nee GOLDSHMIDT. I believe Esther settled in Liverpool. Rabbi Avraham Druskowitz was a Rabbi in Seta, near Kaunas and wrote a book that was publishd in Kaunas in 1933. I assume they emigrated after that, although it is possible that they emigrated as early as 1912. I believe a brother Yochanan and sister Sarah also emigrated, but I know Sarah traveled on to the US and then Israel. I have searched the Jewish Chronicle for DRUSKOWITZ(VITZ)(VICH) to no avail; for Esther GREENBERG, I have found announcements of grandchildren and great grandchildren, but am not sure if the Esther mentioned is my relative. I do not know Esther's husband's first name or the names of their children. If anyone knows the family please contact me privately. Thank you for your kindness. Best Regards, Susan Goldsmith San Francisco Bay Area USA ~

Yiddish Theater Notables - Mt. Hebron Cemetery in NY

David Harris <dorsharris@...>
It was brought to my attention by Judi Langer-Surnamer Caplan, that
Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Queens, NY has a section of burial plots for members of the Yiddish Theatre Alliance. The Alliance section is located in Block 67. Judi was kind enough to include a photo of the grave of Maurice Schwartz, a founder of the Alliance and a noted actor on New York's Yiddish stage. If interested in an email photo attachment of the grave stone, please email me directly at <dorsharris@verizon.net> A listing of names in that section can be found at http://stevemorse.org/vital/cem.php?cem=http://www.mounthebroncemetery.com/search.asp&fromyear=0000&toyear=9999 Be sure to copy the entire URL into your browser. For IAJGS attendees joining the bus trip to Mt. Hebron, if there's time to spare, you may wish to visit the Yiddish Theatre Alliance Section. Possibly, a future YT&V web page could be designed to include photos >from Mt. Hebron and other cemeteries with Yiddish theater and Vaudeville notables. So, if taking photos at the cemetery, please try to take additional photos at the Yiddish Theatre Alliance Section. David W. Harris Moderator, YT&V
