Bavarian Matrikel / Edict of 1813 /JudenEdikt #germany

ogburnwill@...

Hi.
Is there an English version of the 1813 edict issued by the King of Bavaria?
This is the Bayerische Judenedikt which allowed Jews to own land burt also set
forth various restrictions on Jews and requiring that certain records be kept of
Jews.

Actually, I have seen it referred to by different names: JudenMatrikel (which
actually seems to refer to records required by the edict); Das Bayerische Juden
Edikt 1813-1861; and, in English, the "Edict About the Conditions of the Jewish
Fellow-Believers in the Kingdom of Bavaria." It was issued June 10, 1813.
I have seen various names for this document, and many references to it, but never
the language of the document itself. An English version apparently existed on the
internet at one time, but that address (http://home.t-online.de) was apparently
sold and reorganized for other purposes.
Any leads would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

Hello GerSig,
I am new to the group. I have been doing genealogy for several years, and am
pretty good with American records and newer (novice?) to German records.
I live near Boston Massachusetts, USA, and speak only English.
I have identified great great, and great great great grandparents in Germany.
The names and towns I am interested in are:
HAMBERG (in America: HAMBURGER) Niedernberg, Lower Franconia, Bavaria to USA
(Baltimore and New York) in 1840s and 1850s.
KAHN Gonnesweiler and nearby villages, Birkenfeld, Oldenburgh to USA (Evansville
Indiana and nearby) in 40s, 50s, and later.
GUMBERTS >from Rathsweiler and Essweiler, Rheinish Bavaria; also >from Weisenheim
am Berg, Palatinate; to USA (Evansville, Indiana) in 1830s, 1840s.

I look forward to learning >from this listserve. Thank you in advance. -Will

Kohen alternate surnames #general

David P Cohen

Sat, 22 Jul 2006, Jane Zeman Smith asked about the surname "Kohen". It has
been disguised or translated to vernacular in host countries, viz.
Kahn/Schiff in Germany, Kaplan in Poland Sacerdote in Italy, Aronow, B'Aron
or many others.

Otherwise, kohanim have adopted secular names without regard to parallel
meanings. My Reznik, Rotsztejn, Beron and Rappaport antecedents all were
Kohanim.

Yizkor Book for Lida and the Surrounding Area #general

David Bickman

I have come into possession of a copy of the Yizkor Book for the town of
Lida, now in Belarus but formerly in Poland.

The book is in Hebrew and Yiddish, was published in Tel Aviv in 1970.
I would like to see the book find a good home. I would be willing to send
it to someone who has a family history interest in Lida if that person would
simply pay for the postage and handling.

Is it a section of a larger cemetery?

I know that Rebecca's son, Gustave WACHT is buried in Maimonides

WACHT.

Can anyone help me on this?

Dear Batya,

Perhaps the following may help you. The problem may be due to the
fact that you do not have the name quite right. The expression
"Rodesh Shalom" does not exist -- because Rodesh is not a Hebrew
word. However, the expression "Rodef Shalom" does exist -- and
could perhaps be the name of a cemetery. It means "Pursuer of peace"
and is an epithet that Jewish tradition applies to Aaron the High
Priest (the brother of Moses according to the biblical narrative,
although modern bible scholarship takes a different view ).

So, perhaps if you try "Rodef Shalom " you may get better results. Good luck!

I am trying to research my family and would appreciate any help you can
offer to find out what happened to my relatives during the Second World
War. The family members I am trying to research were Smuelis and
Nechama ZULTY. I do not know their exact residence before WWII, but in
1942 they were imprisoned in the Vilnius Ghetto. Smuelis was born in
1915 , was a baker and would have been 27 years-old when put in the
ghetto. Nechama was born in 1929, was a tailor/seamstress, and would
have been 13 years-old when put in the ghetto.

I know little about where my ZULTY family came >from but I do know that
some of the family came >from the Minsk guberniya and others >from the
Tiktin/Tykocin area. My grandfather, David ZOLTY, was born in Radomsko,
Poland.

I am French and my English is limited. This message I am posting was
translated for me. If you can reply to me in French, it would be
greatly appreciated. If you do not know French, then I will have your
replies translated. I mention this because the language issue limits my
