Ukraine birth, death, marriage records #general

I have traced my family's roots to the town of Yarun (Ukraine) and
neighboring towns.

Can someone tell me whether it is possible to obtain birth, death or
marriage records >from that area, dating to the time period between
1880 - 1918?

Family Zulty #lithuania

I am trying to research my family and would appreciate any help you can
offer to find out what happened to my relatives during the Second World
War. The family members I am trying to research were Smuelis and
Nechama ZULTY. I do not know their exact residence before WWII, but in
1942 they were imprisoned in the Vilnius Ghetto. Smuelis was born in
1915 , was a baker and would have been 27 years-old when put in the
ghetto. Nechama was born in 1929, was a tailor/seamstress, and would
have been 13 years-old when put in the ghetto.

I know little about where my ZULTY family came >from but I do know that
some of the family came >from the Minsk guberniya and others >from the
Tiktin/Tykocin area. My grandfather, David ZOLTY, was born in Radomsko,
Poland.

I am French and my English is limited. This message I am posting was
translated for me. If you can reply to me in French, it would be
greatly appreciated. If you do not know French, then I will have your
replies translated. I mention this because the language issue limits my
ability to quickly and efficiently utilize the Jewishgen website. In

Litvak SIG Dues #lithuania

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Dear Litvak SIG:

Can I get a clarification regarding Litvak SIG dues:

1. Must you be a dues paying member to vote in the Litvak SIG election?

2. If so, how much are Litvak SIG dues?

3. When is the deadline for payment of dues in order to vote?

4. Can you pay the Litvak SIG dues at the Conference and still be eligible
to vote?

5. If you can pay at the Conference, when, where and to whom can you pay
the dues?

Thanks,
Ann Rabinowitz
annrab@bellsouth.net

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Election Chair Eden Joachim will answer questions about
the election within the next few days, but to try to answer some of Ann's
questions: One must be a dues-paying member in good standing to vote in the
election. LitvakSIG dues are $36 per year. They may be paid at the
conference, and there will be a table set up at the beginning of the
meeting to accept dues for those who have not yet paid them but wish to
vote.

Re: Visit to Bialystok #poland

Dear Aviva:

There is an English guidebook to Jewish Bialystok entitled
"Jewish Bialystok and Surroundings in Eastern Poland" by
Tomasz Wisniewski.

I would suggest that your son visit the Bagnowka Cemetery on
Wschodnia Street; the Muzeum Historyczne w Bialystok (The
Museum of the History of Bialystok) at ul. Warszawska 37;
the monument to the destruction of the Great Synagogue; the
Ghetto Cemetery on ul. Zabia, which is now a park with
monuments to the Ghetto fighters and martyrs; and walk
around the Ghetto area where many Jews lived before the War.

I hope your son's group will also be visiting Tykocin, where
the ca. 1650 Synagogue now serves as a regional Judaica
museum.

I hope he has a very interesting trip.

Revier Fleisher and Reuven Fleisher #poland

Marcia Goldberg <marcia.fargotstein@...>

My mother told me that her paternal GGM arrived on a ship to Boston
on the day she was born. I realize that I don't know whether it was her
GF's mother or her GM's mother. I searched the manifests for four ships
that arrived within 5 days of my mother's birth. The Susquehanna lists
a Renvier Fleischer and a Feiga Rojtberg, so it could be either GGM.
That's assuming that Renvier is a woman's name. I have only seen the
name one other time. Does anyone know for sure that it is a woman's
name and the origin of it?

Frieda Celia Fleisher, my GGM, had a brother Reuven who had six
children: Sarah, Sam, Rita, Celia, Jack and Rachel (Rae). Sarah died
and her husband married a cousin who raised their son Edward whom I
know. Celia (Reich?) was the GM or GGM of Adam Rich of "Eight is
Enough." Jack had a daughter named Arlene and Rachel had a daughter
Cydel. I remember Reuven's wife as "Tante Fleisher" (Auntie Fleisher).
I actually met Arlene and Cydel in the 1960s, but do not know their
married names, and have lost track of all of Reuven's descendents except
for Edward Chakoff (of Cleveland, OH and now of California). The rest
lived in New York City.
Thank you.

An informal group of AustriaCzech SIG members are preparing an EXCEL
spread sheet listing information ( language, number of pages, whether
there are illustrations) on each town in Hugo Gold's book on the Jews
of Bohemia. If you can help us ( a little or a lot) please contact
Vera Finberg at hjfinberg@earthlink.net. It is not necessary to own
a copy of the book. It makes no difference where in the world you
are located, you can volunteer for this project.

Re: Hugo Gold's Bohemia & Moravia books #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Vera Finberg writes: <Does anyone personally own either of these Hugo
Gold books and could Xerox the Table of contents for me?

I am especially interested in which entries are in Czech in the
Bohemia book. I understand the Moravia book is in German>.

Thanks to Susan Boyer - another fantastic volunteer - I have the
Bohemia book which has been of great help to me.

I must tell Vera, and everyone else though, that the contents give no
idea of the language of the chapters. Each chapter [and there are
about 253 chapters - two hundred and fifty three!] just has as a
title - the *place name*.

Finally there is a statistical chapter in Czech at the end
p. 729-733

The best approach would be to make an Excel file and then post the
results on our website:

Four columns: [unless you have any better suggestions?]

Title - author - brief comment re contents - language.

This is a big task and I am prepared to volunteer to start the ball
rolling by indexing the first 26 places letter A-B:

Adlerkosteletz > Bukowitz
Who will join me?

Any translation project would be massive and I cannot see how this
can realistically be done by us. I hope I am wrong. Perhaps a few
key places should be targeted first?

Re: Hugo Gold's Bohemia & Moravia books #austria-czech

Ruth Coman <ruth.coman@...>

Celia Male has suggested that it would be useful to prepare an Excel sheet
listing the chapters in the Hugo Gold Bohemia book.

I think this is an excellent way of taking this key project forward. We can
use the helpful listing of communities shown on the Austria Czech website.

I will be happy to do C-E (Caslau to Elbogen and approximately the same
number of entries as Celia has volunteered to undertake) and would like to
suggest a 5th column "Number of Pages".
