The KOFFLER family
#romania
Jacob <koppler@...>
Hello,
My name is Jack KOFFLER and I'm >from Israel. I'm new to the family history research. I have some troubles because my father isn't cooperating. All that I know is this: My father Romanian name is Bazil KOFFLER, and he was born in Bucharest. They lived in Nerva Traian st. no. 42 or 46 (we don't know exactly). His father was Jack KOFFLER born in 1892 in Bucharest. He had a restaurant in Bucharest, which he got >from his father, But we don't know the name of the restaurant. It was in the street named Dudesti, not far >from the restaurant was Sinagoga Mare. My father's grandfather was Baruch KOFFLER and he was born in Austria, we don't know where. He was probably born in 1844 and got to Bucharest in 1848. His father was Yosef Koffler >from Austria, and we don't know anything about him. I also have some pictures. I'm looking for any relatives and the connection back to Austria. So far I have learned that the KOFFLER family probably originated in Austria around Tyrol, but all the records >from back then are Christians. I Don't know where and when the Jews picked up the KOFFLER name, or that it was a Jewish name all along. Any help is welcomed. Regards, Jack KOFFLER Ramat-Gan Israel

Location of Kazmazah, Transnistria
#romania

In the book Flares of Memory, a collection of stories >from survivors who
were teenagers during the holocaust, my mother Libby (Liba) TANNENHAUS, describes how her mother Tima TANNENHAUS and father Mordekhai (Motke) TANNENHAUS died of typhus during one of many deportations of Jews >from Romania (in this case, >from Suceava) to Transnistria. The location of their death was a place called Kazmazah, which my mother recalls to be a very small village. I am unable to locate any such place and was wondering if anyone has any information on it. Thanks. Theodore G. Stern El Cajon, California

Thanks to all the people who sent me information about Slutzk, because my
great-uncle was buried in the Slutzker plot at Mt. Zion cemetery. However, I have since learned that he was not >from Slutzk, but supposedly joined the Slutzker society because he liked their social life! So much for genealogical "clues"! Would the Sluktzer records at YIVO be likely to have any information about where he was from? Judy Floam Baltimore, MD Looking for GARFINKEL/GARFINKLE and STRELL/STRELETZ >from Minsk Gubernia

Seeking photos of Lugansk and Zolotonasha

Dara Pearlman <pearlman99@...>
Dear Fellow Ukraine Researchers ,
I am seeking photos of Lugansk and Zolotonasha to include in a small booklet I am writing about my BALIN and FUCHS family that lived in Lugansk and Zolotonasha circa 1900. I am especially interested in images of the country side, or of buildings that existed pre-1910. If you have any photos that you could share, I would be most grateful. I would of course include a photo credit, and copyright notice. If you wish, I would also send you a copy of the final booklet. Many thanks, Dara Pearlman Cupertino, California USA

Lodz and Warsaw ghetto - drama documentaries on BBC Radio 4
#general
Celia Male <celiamale@...>
For those of us who had relatives who lived/died in
the Lodz ghetto, this Friday's drama documentary, "The Conversation" on BBC Radio 4 should be of particular interest and poignancy. "The Conversation" is a dramatic reconstruction of a conversation between Trevor FRIEDMAN whose father was a Jewish slave labourer in the War and Roman HALTER, who had shared the same experience. It is based on tape-recorded interviews in the form of a "question and answer" dialogue with HALTER, a survivor and Trevor, the son of a survivor, whose father arrived in Britain in 1945 aged 20 and never told him anything of his horrendous youthful experiences. It was 24 years after his father's death that Trevor finally knew the facts. You can listen to it on "BBC Listen Again" till the coming Friday - it is informative and horrific. Stutthof conditions are also discussed as are Mengele's sadistic selection processes - all in a matter-of-fact calm manner. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml Go to Afternoon Play (45 min) Broadcast on Radio 4 - Fri 30 Jun - 14:15 The drama documentary I am just listening - "Dr Korczak's Example" about the orphanage in the Warsaw ghetto is also well-worth listening to: read about Dr KORCZAK here: http://korczak.com/Biography/kap-0.htm http://korczak.com/Biography/kap-1who.htm Unfortunately, it will bring tears to your eyes - especially the last ten minutes describing the liquidation of the orphanage and the transportation of he children to Treblinka. Dr KORCZAK's legacy to world at large is the the United Nation's "Rights of the Child". Go the the Saturday Play - on Radio 4 "Listen again." You have one week to listen to it. Celia Male [U.K.]
