1939 Flight of Chofetz Chaim Yeshiva from Radin to Lithuania #general

Steve Orlen

Dear Cousins,

In 1939 a relative of mine fled the Chofetz Chaim Yeshiva in Radin
with about 100 students & their teachers to either Vilnius or Utan in
Lithuania. By a stroke of ironic luck, a few weeks before Hitler's
Blitzkrieg the KGB arrested them all as counter revolutionaries and
sent them by freight train to various gulags in Siberia. After the
war, those who survived gathered in a town near Nurenberg in the
American Zone. >from there, some went to a French town near Monaco...
Has anyone seen any references to this trek, any books? I should
assure you that the story is essentially true, but I'm not sure
whether my cousin simply went to the French town, or Yeshiva bochers
re-gathered there. The story was told to me by my elderly cousin who
took that journey.

Best, Steve Orlen

July 9 JGSCV Meeting- "Detecting Faults and Errors in Genealogical Sources" #general

jan meisels allen <janmallen@...>

Dear Jewish Genners:

The Jewish Genealogical Society of the Conejo Valley and Ventura County
(JGSCV)-- California is meeting on Sunday July 9, 2:00 -4:00 p.m.

Topic: Detecting Faults and Errors in Genealogical Sources- Werner Frank

Is the information you have obtained >from documents, metzevahs, photographs,
family stories true or not? Come and learn about the many times family lore
or information leads genealogists to the incorrect conclusions! Be the first
to hear this new lecture which will be given at the IAJGS Conference in New
York this summer!

Our speaker, Werner Frank, founding member and newsletter editor of the
JGSCV, author and lecturer, will discuss potential problems inherent in
genealogical research found while "digging" for his own family roots. The
presentation will focus on controversies in line of descent (using
rabbinical lines as an example); confusion in representation of names
(format differences when names were recorded); reliability in tombstone
inscriptions (errors in translating >from Hebrew lettering); biographical
fuzziness (questionable secondary sources); differences in Julian and
Gregorian calendar dates (effects Russian era and non-Russian calendars AND
resulted in the US of a loss of 11 days in September 1752); and
photographic authenticity (does the camera lie?). The presentation
sensitizes the genealogist's questioning of resource materials and
encourages validation and confirmation of their conclusions.

The meeting is scheduled for July 9, 2006 >from 2:00-4:00 pm at Temple Adat
Elohim. The meeting is co-sponsored with Temple Adat
Elohim.

Location: Temple Adat Elohim, Social Hall
2420 E. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA

Directions:

Take 101 Freeway - exit Rancho Road in Thousand Oaks, go north (if coming
from the east across Thousand Oaks Blvd) to E. Hillcrest Drive
turn right on E. Hillcrest go about 1.3 miles (just east of Conejo School
Road) Temple is on the right.

There are approximately 75 parking spots within the complex. There is no
parking on Hillcrest Drive. You may park in the complex or on any
of the side streets.

There is no fee to attend the program, and anyone interested in Jewish
genealogy is welcome to attend.

Hospital in Kaunas #lithuania

Sylvia Furshman Nusinov

I am prompted to ask if there is anyone reading my message who may be
familiar with a hospital in Kovno, 1939.

My Father's sister wrote to him at that time - her last letter - saying she
was a nurse in the hospital near her home on Pilies g=red No.14

Is it possible that there is someone in LitvakSig who may have knowledge
of the hospital, its name and/or its records or documents of employees?

A friend touring Kovno a few years ago graciously took a few photos a short
distance >from the rear of the hospital as it could be seen >from Pilies St.
Using all the resources I know of, I have not been able to secure any
information on the fate of my Dad's sister since the dating on the letter -
December 1939.

If anyone has any thoughts on my search, please contact me privately -
unless the information would be advantageous to the members of the
Discussion Group or LitvakSIG.

Thank you.

I have recently discovered that my JACOBS family come >from Poland. I
have since then discovered that my great - grandmothers name was Hannah
nee COHEN. My grandfather's birth certificate shows our JACOBS surname
as JACOB. My grandfather's name was Woolf (b + - 1887/8 ) and his
parents were Abraham Jaocob / s and Hannah ( nee COHEN). I am struggling
to find where in Poland they came from.

If any of this is familiar please e-mail me privately.

Great news that we can now order on line >from the US National Archives. I
was trying to find the fee schedule and it looks like to order
naturalization records, the charge is the same $.50/page (regular size

This seems too cheap. Did I miss the right schedule? Can someone give me the
