I have no idea what was usual. But I have one instance of a relative who
debarked alone at the Port of New York in 1900 enroute to Montreal (so says
the passenger manifest), and gave an ultimate-destination address that was
then, as it is now, occupied by a large church, and promptly disappeared

from the planet, as far as I have been able to tell. I also don't know what

happened to the wife and large family he left behind in Lomza.

Help. I am caught up in a bit of a confusion. I have several
records for a woman named Sarah Borak. I am not sure all
of the records refer to the same person. In some records a
Sora Ryfka Burak has a father named Byszko Burak, in others
Sora Ryfkas fathers name is Bysk Berkowicz. In some records
Sora Ryfka Buraks mother is named Basia z Joelow, and in others,
she is listed as Bejla Joskowna.

She died in 1927. Her gravestone, lists Sarah Burak as daughter of
Binyamin Ha Cohen. Her death certificate listed Benjamin Burak and
Fannie Miller as her parents.

Questions:

1. Was marriage allowed between first cousins in the 1800s era in Lomza,
Poland?

Yes. But I don't think that is what we have here.

2. Is Byszko Burak and Bysk Berkowicz possibly the same person?

They are. "Berkowicz" in this case is a patronymic, not a surname. Sarah's
grandfather is Berko.

3. Is Basia z Joelow (or Joelowna) the same person as Bejla Joskowna

To me, it looks like there has been some confusion at some point between
Basia/Bejla and Joel/Josko. My bet is that there is one woman here.

4. Is Bysk a yiddish diminuitive for Binyamin?

Evidently.

The marriage license for my great grandparents lists her father as Asur

My cousin sent a scan of a tintype. We both clearly recognize her
g-grandfather (Louis) because of his ears. She believes the older woman on
the image is her g-grandmother and the younger her daughter. There is also a
man in the image that appears to be the same age as the older woman. I
believe the younger woman is Louis's wife as they appear to be the same age
and both are posed on the left side of image while the other couple is on
right (women seated in front of men). I suspect this for three reasons - the
apparent age of the women, the pose, and the fact that the daughter was born
in 1890. While tintypes continued to be available their popularity had
declined by the time the daughter would have been a grown woman. This leaves
open the possibility that the older couple is either the parents, ie, my
gg-grandparents, or older brother, ie my g-grandfather. I have a book on the
history of photography but am wondering if anyone can recommend a book that
is helpful in dating an image based on fashion?

And chewing a piece of cotton negated the feared effects of sewing clothes
while wearing them.

Another one was not whistling in the house (not that we whistled a lot but
we were warned against it altho' I'm not sure why)

About spitting over the left shoulder to avert ill-luck: my mother told me
that as a child in Leeds she went with her mother to see a Yiddish theatre
company perform Hamlet (in Yiddish of course). All went well until the graveyard
scene. The curtain rose, the audience saw a graveyard with tombstones - and
rose as one person, spitting three times in unison over their left shoulders.
My mother died last year aged 96 so this must have occurred over 80 years
ago.

grandmother. But I was told it was a matter of hygiene rather than anything
