GENESSIN Izhok - Tarutino, Bessarabia #rabbinic

ALEX VOLKOV <volkoff@...>

Hi Genners!

I am looking for one particular person - Itzhok GENESIN (likely, son
of Shaya). He lived in shtetl called Tarutino, Bessarabia and was
highly respected man. I am not sure if he was a rabbi, but what I
know for sure, he was very involved in Kabbala, even tried to teach
my grandfather some basics. Chances are, he was a rabbi.

The time he lived there is not known exactly, but definitely from
1860s till at least 1916.

Thank you!
Alex Volkov

Visit in Slobodka Belarus #belarus

Guy Elizur - Israel <GuyE@...>

Dear colleagues
Few weeks ago I returned >from a route journey in east Europe. One of the
places I visited was the village where my grandmother was born named:
Slobodka.
Slobodka is located near Braslev in the west-north of Belarus near the
border with Lithuania (Latitude: 55.6833 ; Longitude: 27.1833)
There were about 40 Jewish families in this shtetl before the war and
also there was Jewish cemetery. The cemetery was destroyed in 1960s by
the communists. Center of culture was built on this place. Jewish
monuments were used as a foundation for this building.

Anyone having interest in the Slobodka shtetl, please contact me through
by private email.

Best Regards,

I am going to go with Ury and Judith's explanation, at least in the

English name was said to have been Philip Phillips.

Re: PAIS - the name #general

Stan Goodman <SPAM_FOILER@...>

My answer is: The giving name Pais is a nickname that is derived >from the
name Faybush that also is a nickname to the Hebrew Biblical name Uri. It
is a long story to tell why it came to this name and if you look in the
JewishGen archive you find a lot of letters about the name Faybush ,Pais and
Uri. This nickname was very popular in Holland and it is also used as a
family name.
It isn't such a long story. Someone explained here some time ago that
"Feibush" is nothing but a slight corruption of "Phoebus". "Phoebus" is
another name for Apollo, a Greek god associated with the sun, therefore with
light. "Uri" is >from a word meaning "light", as is "Meir". "Feivel" is
another form, differing only in the Yiddish diminutive suffix.

One is surprised if it is not a kinnui for "Shimshon" too, which is also
related to the sun.

Query re Rabbi Chaim Nathan Dembitzer #general

Jules Levin

Chaim Nathan Dembitzer was a dayan of Krakow in the 19th Century,
and the author of an early book in Hebrew on Jewish genealogy (google
his name for full details, or see Jewish Encyclopedia).
Some questions:
Was his book translated into English?
Assuming not, does he include his own genealogy in this book? I have
one source that he was
descended >from Isserles, but would like some confirmation and details
re the lineage.
Finally, are there any pictures of him--he lived till end of 19th
Century so it is not improbable?

I am writing on behalf of my wife, his greatgranddaughter, a child
survivor whose parents did not survive and only in
the last decade has been able to restore her knowledge and contacts
with her family. It would be a mitzvah to help her
in this endeavor.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Query re Rabbi Chaim Nathan Dembitzer #general

LAREDO and TILI from Alexandria, Egypt #general

J.R. Silver

I have been commissioned by my cousin to try to investigate her family line
from Alexandria, Egypt. Family members emigrated in the 1920's to Southport
in the UK and a large cluster of the family lived between the two wars in
Paris. The family names are LAREDO and TILI ( unsure of spelling of
latter)

She will be visiting Egypt on business in September and wonders whether
there are any traces to be found of the former Jewish community of
Alexandria.

I shall be at the New York conference .
