Gdansk chapter in Pinkas HaKehillot #danzig #gdansk #germany #poland

Logan J. Kleinwaks

I am very pleased to announce that the English translation of the Gdansk
chapter in Yad Vashem's Pinkas HaKehillot Polin, vol. VI is now available
online at
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_poland/pol6_00033.html
on JewishGen's Yizkor Book Project website. This is available especially
because of the efforts of translator David Lewin (SIG member), whose work
was enhanced by proofreader Tamar Amit (SIG member), with assistance from
Ada Holtzman and Logan Kleinwaks (SIG member). We are grateful to
JewishGen -- in particular, to Joyce Field and Lance Ackerfeld of the Yizkor
Book Project -- and Yad Vashem, without whose support this also would not
have happened.

Included in the online presentation are several photographs, beginning at
the bottom of the first webpage and continuing on subsequent webpages
(reachable by clicking the "Next Page" button at the bottom). Please
examine the following photographs, which contain members of the Danzig
Jewish community, and let us know (either by contacting me privately or by
posting on the SIG mailing list) whether you can identify any of the people
depicted:

Bottom of the first webpage: "The founders of the TAZ [(A Jewish Health-Care
Association)] Organization in Danzig, 1930s"
Second webpage: "Students of the Jewish Gymnasium [High School] in Danzig,
1937"
Second webpage: "World Zionist Youth Congress in Danzig 1924"

When making an identification, please indicate how well you knew the person,
and whether you are aware of any documents or other photographs of the
person that could be used as corroboration. (Please do not email me those
other photographs just yet.)

The chapter discusses many Danzig Jewish organizations of the 20th century,
and I would be interested to hear >from anyone who belonged to them and can
tell us more about their activities and membership. Some, but not all,
membership records are preserved in the community's archives at the Central
Archives for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem.

Thanks very much and Shabbat Shalom,

Searching family names need help! #poland

Debbie Jurblum <debbie_jurblum@...>

My name is Debbie JURBLUM and I have been researching my family tree for
many years, seriously for the last five yet I am a novice.

My family tree consists of around 600 people and all have been found by word
of mouth except for about ten people which I have just recently found on
Jewish Gen. They are my first discoveries! I have recently been to Israel
and in touch with family I have never met before! Did some research in Yad
Vashem and Beit Hatefutsot but had no luck there. Just not enough time!
I will be at the New York Conference. I was hoping that there might be
others at the conference and also members of the SIG groups who may also be
looking for my families. The Paternal sides of the families are the hardest
I would have thought that they would be easier due to surnames!

My family names and towns are;
RECHTSCHAFFNER, SWARTZBARD, REISS (Lwow, Lyon )
FEIWEL, MILROM, WEKER, MELER, SPERGEL, SCHRAEGER, (Sokol, Tartakow, Lwow)
UNGER (Germany, Gurs / Escou France)
WEISS, WOLFMANN,TEICHTAHL, (Lubavetcher WEISS in Switzerland, Bielsko
Biala, Zacopagnya/zacopane(Czech side of Poland?) , Bendzin,Osweinim,
Jureno/ Juryno USSR)
DRUCK/ER, MEISELMAN (Kuty,Romania)
JURBLUM, ZYLBERBERG/SYLBERBERG/SILBERBERG(Warsaw)
DOBROWODKIER (Chelm)
If you have any information on any of these families I would love to hear
from you.

Preservation and Cemetery Restoration Project #poland

Avigdor&Laia <lbendov@...>

This is a public notification that Yad LeZehava Holocaust Research Institute
is actively engaged in a major project to renovate and reclaim endangered
Jewish cemeteries throughout Poland, including in the Bialystok region. The
work is carried out by teams of youth accompanied in study trips with expert
guides and professional supervision and with the cooperation of local Polish
municipalities and officials. The Polish Foundation is also partnering with
Yad LeZehava for this purpose. The Israeli Ministry of Education and the
Israel Defence Forces IDF are cooperating with Yad LeZehava to broaden the
program and reclaim and preserve as many cemeteries as can be prioritized
and document the sites and names of Jews interred before there will the
ravages of age and outright theft destroy this Jewish heritage. Interested
organizations and individuals can contact me privately for more details.
Our intent is to raise awareness of this activity; one of many by Yad
LeZehava in Eastern Europe.

Our website is under construction and should be up and running soon, but
this is an advance announcement.

From: Eva Blanket <eva.b@...>

Could anyone please advise how one can get details of persons entering the
US after 1924, especially to New York, if they don't subscribe to
Ancestry.com?

Also is there any way of being able to get address and telephone numbers
from US telephone directories for any time period in the 20th century
(particularly the first half) on the net?

Also, is there any overall registry of Jewish Cemetery records in the US one
could access over the net?

Thanks a lot.
