Manchester records - Baker discovery
#unitedkingdom
Lois Kaufman <lois@...>
Many thanks to Lorna Kay for all the work involved in transcribing the
marriage records of the Holy Law Beth Aaron Synagogue (Red Bank) and the South Broughton (Sabrina Street) Synagogue in Manchester. I think that I have discovered the marriage record of the hitherto anonymous brother of my g-grandfather, David Baker: Michael Baker married Ada Rosenberg on 14th September 1902 at the Holy Law Synagogue. Michael's father is named in the Manchester record as Mendel Baker. (Menachem known as Mendel according to the Manchester Great Synagogue entry of the marriage of my g-grandfather.) Mendel is also described as a corn miller and this ties in with information passed down that the family owned a mill in Russia. (I believe that this branch of the family came >from the Vilkaviskis / Mariampol area.) There is a witness named Joshua Baker who I assume would be related. I do not think that the civil marriage record would add much to the information provided by the synagogue marriage record but I would like to know where I would find the marriage authorisation document for this marriage (the names of Michael's brothers would be given) - would it be with the Beth Din in London, or in Manchester. I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Does anyone recognise this marriage or these names? Regards, Lois Kaufman Pinner Researching: Baker, Fraser, Frezinsky - Vilkaviskis / Mariampol / Manchester Levy, Altman, Wolfssohn, - Poznan/Posen / Rogozno/Rogassen / Schoken/Skoki / Leeds and Manchester Harrison, Silverstone, Goldstone - Manchester

LEWEK of Piotrkow Trybunalski
#general
Steven Bloom <sbloom@...>
I recently found out that my 4th great grandfather, along my direct
paternal line, moved >from Piotrkow Trybunalski to Przedborz in about 1818. I spoke about this in another post. Though he took on the name Jankiel BLUMENZON it looks as if some relatives back in PT may have taken on the surname LEWEK, probably related to the name of an ancestor with the first name Lewek (usually associated with Aryeh in Hebrew). Jankiel's father was Arye/Lewek and his mother was Bluma. So, it seems reasonable that some might have taken on a patronymic surname as opposed to a metronymic one. I am looking for folks >from PT who might be connected to the LEWEK family (probably eventually spelled like Levek or Levick). Please reply privately about specific names and family info, but please reply to the group if you have more general info for Piotrkow that might be of interest. Thanks. Steve Bloom Farmville, VA

Hello All ~
I am helping Herbert Lindow (who does not have Internet access) search for his cousin Robert GOLDSMITH or Solomon Robert Goldsmith. Born Solomon Robert GOLDSCHMIDT on 19 May 1925 in Hamburg, Germany, Robert and his brother Bruno Goldschmidt made their way to England in the Fall of 1938, possibly on a Kindertransport. Solomon Robert Goldschmidt changed his name to Solomon Robert Goldsmith. He may be known as Solomon or Robert. He became a Naturalized British Citizen in 1947. In 1941 he was living with a British family in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire England. It is possible that Solomon Robert Goldsmith may have emigrated to Israel, Kenya, Uganda or somewhere else. Any information about Solomon Robert Goldsmith or his descendants would be greatly appreciated. Please respond privately to AnieDoodle@aol.com Best regards, Anne Dean Covington, Virginia AnieDoodle@aol.com June 25, 2006 3:56 PM Searching: ALLEN, BUKOFZER, COPELAND (Minsk/Grodno?), FRIEDLANDER, GILLMAN, GREENBERG (Grodno), GRODZKI (Suwalki), GROZCKY, GROSBY, GROSSKY, GRODSKY, KAPLAN, KILLASHINSKY, KILLASINSKY, KRAZINSKY (Dubrova), LEWIN, LEWINTHAL, SZEYNMAN (Suwalki)

I cannot comment accurately as I have not got the work at hand, but the Lukas
book Budapest in 1905 quite definitely states that a large part of the population of Pest was of Bohemian origin. Peter Bakos

Zimbabwe Jewish Community Website

Bev <bevshul@...>
I just saw an article about this website in the latest issue of the
Israeli ESRA (English Speaking Residents Association) magazine, looked at the site, and thought it important to pass it on to the genealogical community. It documents the fast disappearing 110 year old Zimbabwean Jewish community. The site is reported to span several thousand pages with 6,000 images and some video clips. Over 4000 tombstones in four cemeteries have been logged and photographed as well as 1,000 marriage certificates from the two major communities, Harare and Bulawayo. Many familyhistories have been posted as well. I have no connection to this website. http://www.zjc.org.il Beverly Shulster Yehud, Israel
