1936/1937 Poznan business directory #germany

Logan J. Kleinwaks

A small 1936/1937 business directory for Poznan is now available online at
the Digital Library of Wielkopolska
(http://www.wbc.poznan.pl/dlibra/docmetadata?id=38737). Because the
business listings are organized first according to business type and then
alphabetically by surname, it is not trivial to search the directory for
particular surnames of interest. The business listings are also not
separately indexed by street address. Therefore, I have made this directory
searchable at www.kalter.org/search (scroll down to the bottom). Please let
me know if you find it useful.

The result of a search is a list of numbers referencing images on the
Digital Library website that contain matches to your search term. The FAQ
on my search site describes how to view the images that interest you.
Please also read the description of the various search methods at the top of
the search page. Best regards,

Logan Kleinwaks kleinwaks@... near Washington, D.C.

Fathers and sons having same first names #germany

Daniel Kester <djkester@...>

I was always under the impression that it was a Jewish tradition not
to name someone after a living relative. But I have found some
examples >from the early 1800's (i.e. around the time family names
were taken) in Wiesbaden of fathers and sons having the same first
and last names. Is my data wrong, or did this commonly happen at
that time? Thanks.

Sharing VM7865 #germany

Hello,
I have posted an image in Viewmate to share.
The direct link is :
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=7865
or go to Viewmate's viewing section
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html and look for VM7865.
This item was just recently found among my grandfather Joel's papers.
It looks like a cover for a sort of ID card issued by the German
General guvermant in Poland and bearing a very bold J for "Jude".
Inside it is an ID card with a picture and fingerprints stamped in
Feb-1942 and "good until 1946"...

I would appreciate comments >from anyone who came acrosssimilar items
before and a translation of the middle part. It looks like it's in
Polish AND German but I am not sure.

I know my grandparents survived the war with fake papers so I guess
this was not used too much by them.

Thanks in advance, Tamar Amit Givatayim, ISRAEL

WW1 German Army Records - REHFISCH #germany

Pete Vanlaw <pvan@...>

Dear GerSiggers,
I'm looking for information on German Jews, who served in the German
Army during WW1, specifically regarding anyone named REHFISCH. I'd like
to learn more about my grandfather, Louis REHFISCH, and possibly his
brothers. I have a letter >from my ggf, Isidore REHFISCH to my gf, in
which he mentions having heard >from Solly and Berthold (REHFISCH?), who
I believe were also in the German Army at the time the letter was written,
in 1917. Any help and or information would be greatly appreciated. Regards,

Pete Vanlaw Studio City, CA <pvan@...>

Viewmate Translation Help Requested (DEUTSCHER family in Rozniatow) #galicia

Marlene Bishow

Dear All:

I have posted three postcards that were written in (Galician) YIDDISH in
October and November, 1912. These cards are a part of a series >from that
decade written by relatives of the DEUTSCHER family in Rozniatow, Galicia to
the children of Chaim and Feiga DEUTSCHER in New York City.

The web address for Viewmate is
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/index.asp

These three cards are particularly notable because two of them VM7880 and VM
7881 were written in October, 1912 by (or for) my great grandfather Chaim
shortly before his death.

VM7883 was written by (or for) his widow, Feige. We think that this was
written after Chaim death (or while he was critically ill). Feige came to
the U.S. in May, 1913 with her remaining children.

We are hopeful that these three cards will answer some important questions.
Better quality scans are available that could not be posted to Viewmate
because of the size restrictions.

Please reply directly to me at @Marlene

Thank you for your assistance.

WWII Commonwealth internments of Jews #general

Nathan Sturman

Fairly large numbers of Jewish refugees were interned as well by
Canada, which also interned its Japanese-Canadian population,
and under somewhat harsher conditions than the US did their
Japanese-Americans. The Jews, refugees >from Germany and occupied
countries, were interned in camps in the Maritime Provinces and
to my knowledge the British Commonwealth detainees were not
compensated or officially apologized to. My own apologies if I
am wrong about this. I don't know about Australia/New Zealand.
