I have looked for the manifest for the Empress if Scotland (Canadian
Pacific Railroad) which came >from Hamburg to Quebec in 1922. I have been
unable to find it. Has any one had better luck? I am looking for a family
that was probably using the name HARMAN for GERMAN an consisted of mother
and 4 children. They were headed for Chicago via Canada.

Holocaust "Victims' in Teheran #general

Paul & Irene Berman <ikpjb@...>

In answer to the question as to what the European Jews who died in Teheran
during WWII, it seems that Teheran served as a route that eventually led to
Eretz Yisrael - then called "Palestine" - for a certain number of persons
fleeing the Holocaust. Like the German Jewish children of the
"Kindertransport", who managed to escape to England, there were what were
called the "Teheran Children", who spent the war years in Teheran, although
I think they only numbered in the hundreds rather than the approximately
10,000 that the British agreed to accept.

meaning of the word 'Ashkanase' #general

foxerly <foxerly9999@...>

Hello there Genners:

Besides doing some genealogy I am also an antique collector. Today I
stumbled on an old textile. Worked into the fabric on the bottom is
one word: Ashkanase. (That was exactly how it was spelled.)

I wonder what it was used for and what the word means? Could it be
someone's last name? Is this a challah cover or some other textile
used by an Ashkenase family?

Please excuse my ignorance and the impostion on your time. I am looking
forward to your ideas/suggestions. Rather than clog up the site please
respond to me privately. Thank you in advance.

Depending on the year, there are those who managed to flee the Nazis
eastward - including those with Sugihara' visas. They went east to Japan.
Some even went on to Shanghai to spend the duration of the war there. There
are a number of books on the subject. Those with offical Sugihara visas are
listed in the Lithuania database.

Etke RESNITZKY/Elka DYNSTEYJN mystery #general

David Priever

Hello fellow Jewishgenners,

I had written long ago about my on-going search for the descendants of one,
Etke RESNITZKY, born ca. 1875 in either Stawiski or Grajewo, Poland near
Bialystock. Her parents were Israel Dawid and Chana DYNSTEYJN (DIENSTEIN in
the United States).

Etke, as stated in the probate record of her brother, was believed to have
perished with her family during the holocaust. The lawyer at the time of
her brother's death in 1947 tried, through various organizations, to locate
Etke and her family. All of this to no avail.

I have tried the records of Yad VaShem and all the possible survivors
listings with no luck. The names of Mrs. RESNITZKY's husband and any
children are unknown.

There is no listing for Etke in the JRI-Poland database but there are
records for two of her several brothers. I located the descendants of one
of the brothers.

Then there is the 1921 passenger list of Elka DYNSTEYJN who came to the US
with three young children and was going to her husband, Leib Arye BERNSTEIN.
Why the difference in names?

I did locate a sister of Elka. I am in contact with the daughter who knows
very little information on her aunt Elka.

Up to this point I have exhausted every avenue of research (or so I think).
Now I turn to the outstanding ideas and suggestions of any of you fellow
Jewishgenners for help.

Thank you very much in advance.

Sincerely,

David J. Priever

"Mark Halpern" <mark@halpern.com> wrote

Zniesienie is not an Archive. Zniesienie (Ukrainian name Znesen'ye) was
a town very near Lwow/Lviv/Lvov/Lemberg where Jewish vital records for
smaller towns near Lwow were registered. The records that were
registered in Zniesienie are now included in the collections at the
Ukraine State Historical Archives in Lviv, the AGAD Archive in Warsaw,
and the Warsaw USC (civil records office).

Miriam Weiner's Roots to Routes Foundation Archive Database (see
www.rtrfoundation.org) shows that the Lviv Archive holds only 1858-59,
1862, 1867-69 births.

The Jewish Records Indexing - Poland AGAD Archive project, referenced in
Errol's posting, has access and would like to index the following
records:

Births 1857, 1872-1905
Marriages: 1872, 1877-78, 1882-84, 1886-1905
Deaths: 1877-1905

The Warsaw USC holds the Zniesienie records that are 100 years old or
less -- 1906~1939.
(...)

Mark,

Miriam Weiner book (and the site) are great sources indeed, but both need a
periodical update as per current Polish Archives databases.

Zniesienie Jewish vital documents are archived separately >from Lwow proper
archives.
They are identified as Lwow-Zniesienie under "zespol" No. 541/0.

(Lwow records are housed under sygnatura No. 300)

Marriages: 1900-1938
Births: 1900-1939
Deaths: 1900-1917, 1920, 1923-1939

All Lwow-Zniesienie vital Jewish records are located at:

Urzad Stanu Cywilnego m. st. Warszawy.
Wydzial Archiwum
02-678 Warszawa, ul. Smyczkowa 14
tel: (22) 847-48-21
email: usc@um.warszawa.pl
www.um.warszawa.pl

Since records are mixed, they will not be transfered to AGAD archives till
at least year 2038, and perhaps this indexing will be carried by our
children.

My son is now twenty years of age and he is already showing keen interest in
Jewish genealogy same as his cousins in Sweden. Hope they will continue our
digging.

In a meantime, one should approach USC Warsaw directly to obtain needed
vital data.

GUTSTEIN-TAUBES family roots #general

yoni ben-ari <yrcdi@...>

In Neil Rosenstein's "The Unbroken Chain" 1990 ed. my ancestors (themselves
descendants of the Mahara"l and the Maharsha"l) stop somewhere around two
hundred years ago with other children of my ancestors including the
GUTSTEIN-TAUBES families. Perusing Meir Wunder's book "Elef Margaliot" (in
hebrew) I see that also ends in my line with Rabbis (father and son) of
Kremenetz . If any other descendants of the father and son Rabbis of
Kremenetz-Arieh Leib and Shmuel (end of the 17th beg. 18th cent.) are
reading this message I of course would like to hear >from them.

Are their any descendants of these two families on this group who are "into"
their roots and could contact me directly. For those wanting to put me on to
the GUTSTEIN family of Chicago (descendants of the Conservative rabbi there
and listed in the Unbroken Chain) I tried to contact them several times
without success, so if anyone knows them personally I would appreciate
forwarding this mail to them.

TIA

Jacob, thank you for telling us about this online Teheran cemetery site -
it is very moving to see the names and photgraphs of the graves with their
decorations and script. This site is a real tribute to the author who has to
be highly praised for this work in honour of his father - David Ben BABAE.

I was very interested to see that over 60 "holocaust victims" were buried
there and immediately started to search for them and try and cross-index
them with Yad Vashem. I have found many "so-called" victims on the online
cemetery but was extremely puzzled about who they were and why they were
in Teheran, indexed thus on the graves: N-KS-ZM-xxxx/N-KS-ZM-xxx-x/
N-KS-ZM-xxxx-x, where x represents digits.

If you search Yad Vashem you find very little. Enter *Iran* as place
of death on an *advanced search* - you find only four named victims. If you
investigate carefully here you find a big clue: two victims died of typhoid
or sickness in 1942 and one SONNENBERG was in the Anders Army on the way to
Palestine - ie an epidemic took place in a camp. One victim has the word
Uzbekistan on his POT and indeed this fits in with the evidence given below.

Who were the other "so-called" victims and how did they get there -
presumably many others survived? I then entered *Teheran* as a place of
death and here I found another four victims and, believe it or not, the
reason they did not turn up in the first search was that *Teheran* is
indexed under Albania! I am sending in corrections. One POT had a
telephone number and I rang up - and I was told that the Teheran victim
was a German prisoner and escaped - he was captured by the Russians and
sent to this camp in Teheran and had also died in an epidemic.

I did live through World War II and had heard of Anders Army but being
a verysmall child I had never of the typhoid epidemic in Teheran. However
I did find a good account here:
http://www.library.cornell.edu/colldev/mideast/polsirn.htm

and here we can see a chapter about the trek of Anders Army via Teheran:

< The Polish Army enlisted thousands of Polish Jewish refugees, who moved
with the army through Iran and Iraq, and even reached Palestine,......
Accompanying Anders' Army were thousands of relatives .... including
hundreds of Jewish refugees, adults and children, who were transferred
to Tehran, after which arrangements were made for their passage to
Palestine. >

and there are numerous sites on the Anders Army:
http://www.robertambros.com/andersindex.htm

Jose Gutstein mentions Mosze Szymon SAWICKI (BURSZTYN) on his wonderful
Radzilow site as a member of this army:
http://www.radzilow.com/shtetllife.htm
The photographs bring Jose's site to life as do the grave photgraphs
on the Teheran site.

Israel Pickholtz wrote to me that Zygmunt PIKHOLC of Gen Anders Army
died of typhoid in Teheran and is buried as a Roman Catholic
<We have a grave photo in the virtual cemetery at pikholz.org.
I also have his file >from Ministry of Defence [MOD], London.>
