Hello
In some old family documents I've found references to a family named
RACHLES (maybe spelt slightly differently in Roman letters - all the
documents I have are in Hebrew or Juedisch-Deutsch in Hebrew script)

from the city of Halberstadt. One member of the family - Yehuda Loeb

Rachles - Ived around the turn of the 18th Century and was the
son-in-law of Rabbi Abraham BERLIN (son of the well-known Court Jew,
Jost LIEBMANN and later the Head of the Beit Din in Amsterdam).

Does anyone have any further information about any of these people? Thanks

Finkel could also derive >from the German "Fink", meaning "finch". The use of
the name of a bird as a woman's first name would parallel the use of "Taube" in

wife was not Jewish, or did not keep traditional values.

I have a case like this in my family too - only they were
Catholic, not Jewish. The man divorced his first wife
because she was an alcoholic. [Divorce is not accepted
by the catholic church] He put his son in an orphanage at
first, then went on to marry a woman "who didn't like children"

I don't understand this because this man had a large extended
family who would have been able to help him raise the child, but
he chose the orphanage instead.

I can understand placing the child in the orphanage at first if
there was no one to care for him while the father was working,
or if the father had to travel for work, but like you, I don't
understand why they would leave the children there after remarrying.

One other thought in your case, maybe the wife became ill, and
was not able to care for the child either?

Does anyone know how complete the new Mt. Zion database is supposed to
be? I have death certificates for 3 relatives, all buried in Mt. Zion
Cemetery in Maspeth, NY. Yet none of them seem to be in the database -
under any spelling I can come up with! Any idea how many records may be
missing?

I want to correct something I posted regarding the above topic in the last
digest. I mistakenly wrote the following:

4. In the above publication there is reference to a report and a photograph
which was compiled by SS-Colonel Karl Jager in December, 1941, which lists
all those killed during that year in major actions in the Kovno Ghetto.
This might include all those killed in the hospital liquidation in October,
1941.

I would like to correct the above so that it states that the report *only* has
numbers of people, their genders, etc., and does not have names at all.
