Effusive Thank You #rabbinic

Evelyn Filippi

** Miracle ** I want to thank again and again and
again Dov, Heshel, Arye, Tomer, Lisa, Aaron, Blima and all the other
many fantastic people who have been helping me. I have gotten
newspaper articles on family, help in researching, names, great advice
and support and such good feelings. You know how exciting it is to
find something new. Well it seems endless the help I have been
getting. Also a miracle with an ancient unreadable copy of my Yichos
Brief that was translated researched and translated. >from Hebrew to
readable Hebrew then to English then to English that I can understand
I can now go back 15 generations to the ReMa and if all calculations
are correct he is my 15th great grandfather .

Hello,
I have posted an image in Viewmate to share.

or go to Viewmate's viewing section
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html and look for VM7865.
This item was just recently found among my grandfather Joel's papers.
It looks like a cover for a sort of ID card issued by the German
General guvermant in Poland and bearing a very bold J for "Jude".
Inside it is an ID card with a picture and fingerprints stamped in
Feb-1942 and "good until 1946"...

I would appreciate comments >from anyone who came acrosssimilar items
before and a translation of the middle part. It looks like it's in
Polish AND German but I am not sure.

I know my grandparents survived the war with fake papers so I guess
this was not used too much by them.

Thanks in advance,

Louis SCHULMAN/SHUCHMAN ideas wanted #poland

Adiva Bloch

I have received a copy of Louis' Social Security Application where he
lists his name at birth of SHUCHMAN. He lists his parents as Jacob
SHUCHMAN and Mali (he did not put the maiden name in). He was born 15
Mar 1886 and died Feb 1966 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He says on the
various census records and the Social Security application that he was
born in Russia/Poland.

To the best of my knowledge he did not have a military record. I have
already requested his immigration records and am awaiting that file. I
have also requested his marriage record, assuming he got married in
Chicago. His wife's name was Sophie.

I am trying to find out where he was from. I cannot find him entering
the USA and it is hard to read what the census records say. The first
census I find him in is 1920, but I think he came over in 1907.

I am not sure where to go >from here to continue this search or find
any information on his wife. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Visit to Bialystok #poland

John G. <jg2010@...>

Hello,
My family left Bialystok for England and America in the 1880s. Do any
records for Bialystok at this time and earlier still exist?

I'll be in Bialystok this summer for a few days, and am reading the book
Jewish Bialystok by Tomasz Wisniewski. Any advice on Bialystok would be
appreciated. I do not know Polish, Russian, or Yiddish.

Thank you,

John Goodman

Isle of Man Internments #unitedkingdom

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

In response to the comments regarding the WWII Internment of Jewish aliens
on the Isle of Man, I would add the Internment during WWI.

My grandfather and many others >from Manchester were taken to the Isle of Man
at the beginning of WWI. Numbers of other Mancunians ended up in other such
internment camps in various locales.

One of my grandfather's cousins was lucky and only had a six week stay
before he was released. He made friends with one of the guards and actually
remained pals with him his whole life.

On the other hand, my grandfather had to stay quite a bit longer as he had
served in the Emperor Franz Josef's Imperial Army despite the fact that he
had been forceably drafted into military service.

The removal of the breadwinner >from the family was quite a trauma for my
grandmother as she was left with seven children to raise on her own for an
extended period of time.

And no, the British government never apologised for the internments that I
know of.

Herman and Deborah Fox, Maurice Moses (Moshe) Flax #latvia

Margotfox@...

My great grandfather Herman FOX left Latvia/Lithuania in the 1880s and
settled in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1886. He eventually was named
Honorary Life President of the Belfast Hebrew Congration. We do not
know Herman’s original surname or where he came from.

We believe Herman was accompanied to Ireland by his second wife, a widow
named Deborah/Dora FLAX FOX >from Riga and their new-born son Bernard
Joshua FOX who was born in 'Russia' in 1885 and eventually became Recorder
of Belfast. Deborah had four daughters and one son >from her previous
marriage to Maurice (Moshe) Moses FLAX. We think at least some of their
children were born in Riga. We do not know her maiden name.

Family lore has it that Deborah's first husband, Maurice Moses FLAX, was
a Chazan in a Shul, possibly in Riga, and that he dropped dead of a heart
attack in the Shul on Sim Chat Torah on the Bima. I suspect that event
occurred in the early 1880s. If anyone has any connection with these
names or these events, I would appreciate hearing >from them.

Thank you, Margot Fox, New York
