Dear Friends,
Having now tracked down the death certificates and cemetery locations of my GG Grandparents Shimshon Shmuel FRISCHMAN, and Mariam Ackerman FRISCHMAN , buried in Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY, I would like to try and connect with cousins descended from them. After speaking at length with my 82 year old father(may he be of healthy mind and body until 120!), I have been able to determine the following: 1. Hannah FRISCHMAN (1875-1947) married Sam (Shaya) KLEIN, had children and grandchildren, but unfortunately, the last contact we had with them was nearly 40 years ago. 2. Harry FRISCHMAN(1876-1939) married but no children. 3. Leo (Yehuda)FRISCHMAN (1878-1945) whom I was named for my father Robert FRISCHMAN's father, married the former Rose SCHWARTZ, daughter of Josef SCHMULOWITZ SCHWARTZ (he actually changed his last name, see a previous post for explanation) of Scranton, Pa. 4. Mildred FRISCHMAN (1880-?) no additional information available. 5. Morris/Maurice(Moshe)FRISCHMAN (1887-1945). I have a marriage certificate for him showing his place of birth as BEREGSZASZ, Hungary. He had two children, Seymour (Shimshon Shmuel)FRISCHMAN and Arnold FRISCHMAN. Arnie, A"H, has a son, Mark FRISCHMAN, who lives in San Francisco. 6. Ella FRISCHMAN (1889-1943) married Joe MOLNAR of EAST NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ. They had no children. 7. Dr. Louis (Eluzer, my middle name)FRISCHMAN (1892-?) ,a pediatrician, married the former Winnie Thompson. They had no children. 8. Matilde Celia FRISCHMAN (Tillie)(1896-1943) married Herbert Wilkes. He had a pharmacy in Chinatown, NYC. I have fond memories of meeting them as an 8 year old in 1960. They had no children. Any cousins out there? Yehuda Frischman Los Angeles

Has Anyone Filled Out FOIA Form G-639, If So Can You Help Me

Hello All
I had the opportunity to go to the New york Public Library over the weekend. Anyways I found my great-grandfathers name in the soundex of the St. Albans Manifest Of canadian port arrivals. The only thing it does is confirm that he indeed came through via canada first. I need to acquire the actual record or copy of it. On the soundex card there is written Ellis Island Registry File and there is a number. I called another facility and explained how I wanted to acquire that information. The gentleman told me to download the FOIA form G-639 and send it to the (INS) office in New York. My question is how do you fill out the form and what information is needed. So, if anyone has already sent in Freedom Of Information Act form can you give me some pointers. Its kind of confusing to me, and I am not sure what I am supposed to put down. The person I am acquiring the information on is deceased for many years. Any help is appreciated. Sarah Greenberg(USA) sacredsisters3@aol.com

Re: Translation Help - Difference between Karczmarz/Szynkarz/Arendarz
#general
Grzegorz Kowalski <gregg@...>
My earliest records of my SZMETERLING aka KALMANOWICZ branch are in KraszewoBasically, "karczmarz" and "szynkarz" mean the same, i.e. inn keeper. "Arendarz" was generally a lessee, i.e. a person who used to lease a property of the landlord, usually a mill or an inn, therefore, "arendarz" was also usually associated with inn keeper. All these words are obsolete >from the point of view of modern Polish language. Best regards, Grzegorz Gembala Krakow, Poland

ED Finder for 1940 US Census
#general
Diane Jacobs <thegenie@...>
I just learned that Steve Morse is working on a one-step ED finder for
the 1940 census just like he has for the 1930 census. That means we will be able to do lookups by address in the 1940 census. This will be very important because on opening day (April 1, 2012) we will not be able to do lookups by name -- NARA doesn't have a name index and the commercial websites will not be able to start building their name indexes until after the census is opened (they will have no advance peeks). Steve plans on having tables for about 200 cities in the 1940 ED finder. If you want to make sure that your particular city is covered, or find out what you can do to make sure it is covered, I suggest you send a message to Steve. His e-mail address is on the top of his website - http://stevemorse.org Diane Jacobs Somerset, NJ

Perhaps I can jump in and explain. I started this database last year prior to my leaving Cape Town. based at the UOS offices, I had full access and willing assistance to all the records of this office which go back many years. As there is a division in the CTown Jewish burial ''system'' I had full and free access to the Gardens Synagogue records, going back to 1880. Wherever I came across a grave where there was any doubt, I had contact with the municipal authorities. With these tools in hand and graciously equipped wit ha digital camera and top of the range HP laptop, I would photograph a row of stones, downloading to an Access database (which I setup and specified the fields) and spent endless hours in the office recording on this database the details on the matzevot. If there was any unclear detail, I would double check the next day at the cemetery. This is a slow process and I am sure Boris is doing a speedier job. I managed over 1000 entries of an estimated 30 000 Jewish graves. This UOS-BOD project is a great endeavour and I am pleased and proud to have initiated this. Hope this will be of help in answering some of your questions. The project should cover Pinelands 1&2, Woltemade Gate 8, 7th Avenue (Kensington) and Muizenberg. the original Woodstock/Salt River has been done as are some efforts in the aforementioned cemeteries. bivracha Richard Newman Program Co-ordinator Aleph Institue University of Denver

Dear Colin, I am not sure what you mean you you say "cataloguing all the graves in Pinelands". If you are saying that Boris goes to the Pinelands cemeteries and makes a list of the grave stones, then I think that he will not create a full list, because there are many graves without grave stones. I think that a more effective list may be gleaned >from the local authority's office in Whale Street. The fact that Boris has been commissioned to do this task begs a further question, namely, how were the lists of Pinelands 1 and Pinelands 2 for the S. A. Jewish website compiled? And surely the Chevra Kadisha must have some record system? Surely they can't bury someone without a Death Certificate? Where do they keep all the Death Certificates? Louis Zetler Hoshaya Israel

Berlot/Birlad research for Plitt Family history
#romania
jane plitt <jplitt@...>
Hi, all!
My adult son and I plan to journey to Rumania this Oct. to search out family roots. In preparation, wondered if anyone had had success hiring a local Rumanian researcher to do family research? Also are there any experienced trekkers who hired guides, and do you have names or any other advice to share? Names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, all welcome. According to my grandfather's naturalization papers, his European home was Berlad. Finally, by chance, are there any Plitts out there that we might try to connect? Most Plitts were German Christians, but there seems to be an interesting number of Jewish Plitts in Besserabia. Thanks to all. Jane Plitt 1612 Point Pleasant Ave. W.
