Hersman Cape Town #southafrica

Saul Issroff <saul@...>

Looking at the Jewish Colonial Trust shareholders at
http://www.jct.co.il/english.html I came across two of my great uncles :
Samuel B. Hersman Cape Town 25678
Moses Hersman Cape Town 25677
Max Hersman Cape Town 25676

J.C.T - Jewish Colonial Trust Ltd.

Samuel B is Barney, Max in known but the problem I have is that I have
never come across MOSES HERSMAN before, and none of the family know of
him. He does not feature on any SA Jewry databases nor in the SA
National Archives database.

The name in Linkuva, Lithuania was Girs=Hersch=Hersman.

Any ideas?

Benjamin was born in 1911. Genendel died in 1922. In addition, would a man,
Benjamin, be given a woman's name, Pessie, rather than a male equivalent or
kinnui?

Pessie may have been a nickname for a real name Pesach.

Besides utilizing various search engines such as Google to find information
on a shtetl, it is important to look at the JewishGen web site and
references it provides. For instance, for Silmala, formerly known as Malta,
Latvia, there is a reference on the JewishGen Yizkor Book site. Further,
the Latvia SIG site, http://www.jewishgen.org/Latvia/ , has a map which
shows Malta, Latvia, closeby to Rezekne, Latvia. You can also check the
JewishGen Latvia Database for Malta, although it does not have the family
names mentioned in the posting.

In addition, don't forget to look at "Encyclopedia of Jewish Life Before and
During the Holocaust" and other such references.

In my family we have Christian who was born to a Jewish father and a Catholic
Italian mother(they met while he was hiding in France during WW2).

"I have screened the 153,000 Jewish burials in Vienna and can confirm
that there are no *Christof* but there is a single *Christian*:"
By your own admission, the mother was an Italian Catholic although I accept
that the son might have been brought up as Jewish.

In my family tree I have also quite a few Christina's. These are also the
descendants of a Jewish father (my grandfather's halfbrother) and a
non-Jewish wife (Christina).

They had a daughter, Christina, who was married in church.

I clearly wouldn't draw any conclusions on that basis that Christina was a
Jewish name.

Indeed such information as far as I am concerned would obviously suggest
their degree of remove >from Judaism.

(There is also a Christelle - son Chris)

But I wouldn't be so bold as to suggest that there was never a Jew with such
a name.
