Sharing: The Auschwitz Album at the Field Museum

Connie Fisher Newhan
For thouse of you in the Chicago area or who will be visiting by
mid-October, there is a temporary exhibit there called "The Auschwitz Album". On the day American forces liberated her concentration camp, a young prisoner named Lili found a photo album in one of the SS barracks. These images are now on display through October 15 at The Field Museum in Chicago. This exhibition was created by Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Authority in Israel. The Field Museum presentation is made possible by the American Society for Yad Vashem. For more information the link is: _http://www.fieldmuseum.org/exhibits/aus_tempexhib.htm_ (http://www.fieldmus= eum.org/exhibits/aus_tempexhib.htm) Best Regards, Connie Fisher Newhan (#1272) Corona, California

Posen, Prussia - BOF meeting / organization
#germany
Barbara Siegel
Attention: All those with research interests in the area of Posen, Prussia.
A Posen,Prussia BOF has been scheduled for the NY2006 conference on Wednesday, August 16 >from 9:30-10:45 A.M. The purpose of the meeting is networking; sharing of research interests and rersources; an opportunity to share successes, problems, etc.. We need to establish future goals, communication vehicles and strategies, and develop an organizational structure. This Posen,Prussia BOF group will NOT be limited to any regional Posen section, but will include all of Posen, Prussia. One of our first orders of business will be to construct a comprehensive database of all those with interests in the area of Posen, Prussia. Past efforts have had only limited success. In the interest of efficiency and economy I am suggesting the following: I would like for everyone who has research interests in this geographical area to send me the following information *** in the body of the message** before the Conference date,if possible. 1. I am/am not planning to attend the NY2006 Conference. 2. Your name. 3. E-mail address 4. Snail mail address 5. Tel.no. 6. Surnames being searched. 7. Town/s or Province in Posen,Prussia I have a volunteer to make an Excel spreadsheet of this data, which hopefully will then be ready to distribute to the attendees at the BOF. In any event, we will already have a head start and can add new additions as they come in. Please note, you do not have to be present at the NY Conference to have your data on this database. But it will be very helpful to get a ballpark idea of how many will be at the BOF so we can prepare enough copies, and arrange for enough seating space. Any additional ideas /suggestions are welcome. We would like to make this BOF as successful as possible. I am also looking for someone to volunteer as recording secretary at the session- any offers? Same Paternal ancestor, different surnames
#general
Steven Bloom <sbloom@...>
I was curious to see if anyone has had success in matching up distant
cousins with different surnames, but the same direct paternal ancestor (i.e., same father's father's father, etc.). Usually, someone such as this would have the same surname (or at least be born with it) but I am speaking of the time period just when surnames were only in rare use, but records were already being registered (such as in Kingdom of Poland in early 19th century). I will illustrate by example: My 4th great grandfather is Jankel BLUMENZON, son of Aryeh and Blima, born in late 18th century, and died in 1885. Through patronymic records (early 19th century records that usually refer to people just by name of father and not a surname) I was able to find Jankel's marriage record, and that he was originally >from a completely different town. Jankel was the first to have the BLUMENZON surname (probably in honor of his mother or something like that). So, what I am looking for is perhaps another sibling of Jankel that obviously has the same patronymic information. Then through some hard work and patience, eventually find this siblings family with the new adopted surname. I admit this is probably only doable with a database this is searchable by many parameters, not just first or last name. Just wondering if someone has had success. It could have some implications for DNA genealogy in particular. Steve Bloom Farmville, VA
