I have been working on a family history project for the past 5 years and
have been unable to locate any information whatsoever on
our great-grandfather's family >from Hungary. Nossen-Nutte "Nathan"
Latterhraus left Lisk, Hungary with his father, mother and older brother and
migrated to Palestine about 1888. He was married in Meah She'arim,
Jerusalem in 1897 and worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company, the
Rishon Le-Tsiyyon Wine Company and the Ungarische Kollel in Jerusalem. He
received the title "Rabbi" >from Ha-Rav Kook before he came through Ellis
Island in 1923 at age 46. He returned to Israel with his wife in 1956 and
is buried in Tel Aviv. It seems he had family >from Hungary living in the
New York Area: MENDELSON in New York City and KLEIN in Westchester. Family
lore states that he was related to the famous R'Elimelech of Lezajsk.

Congratulations to Steve Lasky on his effort.
Does anyone have a list for Warsaw of synagogues. Chazzanim etc.
My GGF was Chazzan/reader/something like that in one of the Warsaw city
Shuls about 1880-86.
Any suggestions how to research that would be much appreciated.

Subject: [warszawa] New York Synagogue and Cemetery Lists >from 1910-1915

Greetings all,

I have put online a listing of many of the synagogues that existed in New
York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx) and Long Island in the years
1910 and 1915. Included for each entry is the name and address of the
synagogue as well as the name and address of the "pastor" or president.
Also listed for each, when available, is the year the synagogue was
established. I know that many have raised questions in the past regarding
many of the older synagogues in New York City, so I thought I would create
these lists for you. The first list is for synagogues in the Bronx and
Manhattan, the other for those located in Brooklyn (Kings) and Long
Island.

I have also created a list of Jewish cemeteries that existed in New York
City and Long Island in 1915. Listed are the names of each cemetery, their
addresses, the area (acreage) of each, along with the number of those
interred in 1913 and the total number of interments to that point. Did you
realize that Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn, established in 1861, already
had nearly 80,000 burials by 1913?

You can access these pages most easily by visiting
www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/erc-cr-001.htm .

My experience requesting US naturalization information has been mixed, but I had
one 1938 immigration where the information that I received included the visa
application and the 1905 Skalat birth certificate. The immigrating couple lived
in Vienna.

My parents received a visa to enter the US in April

Searching for Ellis Island Arrival Info (1906?)On JACOBSONS #general

Julius S Cohen 1

I still am searching for arrival information on my Grandmother, Bessie,
Mother Rose and Aunt Anna JACOBSON. According to our family's oral
tradition, they arrived at Ellis Island around 1906. They traveled with
Grandma's sister-in-law, Molly JACOBSON and three of her sons. They
were to meet with my Grandfather Max and his brother Joe who lived on
Ludlow Street on Manhattan's lower east side.

Consistent with the oral tradition on our (Max's) side of the JACOBSON
family is the oral tradition on the other (Joe's) side of the JACOBSON
family. This even though there has been little contact between the
sides for decades.

Any help that other readers of this site will be greatly appreciated.

I believe you did not. You have mention that "My mgrandmother only used
Petrograd in talking to my mother, and she arrived in the US in 1891, at the
age of 15", which was a bit of surprise.

My point was that the *use* of a city name by its inhabitants or some
subset of them may *precede* the official adoption of the name. I did not
doubt that the official adoption of Petrograd for St. Petersburg occurred
in 1914.
Thank you for clarification

Perhaps Alexander Sharon was unaware that Petrograd was well-known and in
use earlier than 1914. I quote >from Alexander Pushkin's The Bronze
Horseman (1831): "Over dim Petrograd November breathed with autumn
chill".
Alexander Sharon is perfectly aware of the Russophile Aleksandr Pushkin
practices, didn't he renamed Constaninopol to Tsargard?

(The original Russian is readily available on line.) It is true that
"Piter" was used colloquially by the lowest classes, but a reading of 19th
C. literature will find many other examples of Petrograd.
BTW, Miednyy Vsadnik (The Bronze Horesman) was published in 1833 not 1831.
In 1831 Pushkin was preocupied with Russians crushing Poland's National
November revolt
