Contribution to Belarus Yizkor Translation #belarus

Susan Goldsmith

Dear SIG,

Thank you to Dave and Irene for their gentle reminders to contribute
to the Belarus Yizkor Translation project. (I meant to give, but it had
slipped my mind until now).

Many of us will be with family and friends for Pesach, which gives us
the opportunity to mention the translation effort and encourage our
loved ones to give as well. The Yizkor Book is such a gift to us.
We can make that gift widely available by supporting the translation.

I have now searched the micro-fiche for JFS registers at the London=
Metropolitan Archive, and found that all 4 children of my Great=
grandparents who came over in 1893(?) did attend.

But I wonder if anyone can help me interpret the information?

In the comments section, the are the words "exempt" on one, and "exempt EBC"=
on another. Does anyone know what these mean (these were on the 2 boys, one=
girl has no comments, and the other girl, I think, has just 'Read')

Also, there are 7 columns for 'Standard Here', with Roman numerals in the=
appropriate column. I don't know if these represent an exam result, or the=
class they were in when they left, or something else?

One boy reached only a 'I', after having been there for 5 years. The other=
boy had a 'VII' after 6 years. The girls, after 5 years, had 'I' and a=
'0'

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,
Mark Lewis

Shelly, the phone doesn't seem to be listed, but the address on the Page
of testimony is legible and in Latin letters, so I suggest you just write
her a letter.

Israel Pickholtz

I am trying to contact Celina LEFELMAN-ROZENBLUM >from Israel. Last year
she filled out the PoT for a few of her ROZENBLUM relatives listed in the
Yad Vashem registry.

I would like to speak with Celina about her maiden name, LEFELMAN.

Jewish papers in Danzig or Bialystok during WW 1 #general

Sy Pearlman

Back in 1973 an Israeli cousin in Kibbutz Shoval showed me a newspaper
obituary of my paternal grandfather, Srul Pearlman. She said she
couldn't read it because it was not in Hebrew or English. But I could
read it, so it was either in Yiddish, German or Russian. I read it,
and I returned it to her because in those days I was not interested in
the family tree. My grandfather died sometime during or at the end of
WW 1 in Danzig or Bialystok or who knows where.

Who wrote the obituary? Maybe my aunt, because my grandfather was not
really famous, and she spoke Yiddish, Russian and German. Where did
the obituary appear? Probably in a Jewish newspaper published in
Yiddish, Russian or German. My aunt moved to Berlin during WW I and
worked as a translator. Could she have gotten the obituary published
in a German-Jewish newspaper there. Were there Jewish newspapers
printed Yiddish, German or Russian in Danzig and Bialystok during that
period. I know there was one printed in German in Berlin and I tried
to search through four years of newspapers. It was impossible.

Does anyone have knowledge about Jewish papers in Danzig or Bialystok
during WW 1 and whether any attempt has been made to put the names
into databases? Sy Pearlman

Re: location of Ekaterubiskav, Ukraine. #general

tom klein <jewishgen@...>

One of the handy features of the JewishGen Shtetlseeker is to
search for towns "that begin with".

Searching for towns in Ukraine that begin with "ekater" yields a hit
for an "Ekaterinoslav", which is an alternate name for "Dnipropetrovsk"
at 48 deg 7' 34 deg 59'. I suspect that's the town you're looking for.

But it's about 500 miles >from Pinsk.

My patnernal grandfather was Ezekiel Drongofsky or Ike Drongofsky who
married Katie Milman in Montreal in 1908
Ike or Ezekiel's brother was Morris Drongofsky and on his papers it
indicates he is >from Ekaterubiskav, Ukraine.
