Re: location of Ekaterubiskav, Ukraine. #general

One of the handy features of the JewishGen Shtetlseeker is to
search for towns "that begin with".

Searching for towns in Ukraine that begin with "ekater" yields a hit
for an "Ekaterinoslav", which is an alternate name for "Dnipropetrovsk"
at 48 deg 7' 34 deg 59'. I suspect that's the town you're looking for.

But it's about 500 miles >from Pinsk.

My patnernal grandfather was Ezekiel Drongofsky or Ike Drongofsky who
married Katie Milman in Montreal in 1908
Ike or Ezekiel's brother was Morris Drongofsky and on his papers it
indicates he is >from Ekaterubiskav, Ukraine.

Thanks for your assistance.

In 1905, my grandfather arrived in NY. The ship manifest shows the last
residence as Hulh (the second "h" is a best guess based on the "h" in
English for people >from England). Ellis Island has the town listed as
"Hulle" He is also listed as >from Hungary and Hebrew. On my grandparent's
marriage certificate (1908) and on my grandfather, BENJAMIN ADLER's death
certificate (1919), he is listed as born in Austria. I would appreciate any
help anyone can give me on clearing up the name of the town.

Hebrew name #general

Barbara Zimmer <bravo.zulu@...>

Thanks to all who offered their suggestions on how to determine
someone's Hebrew name if they did not know it or were not given one.

The suggestions included:
1. Pick a name with some significance (with the initial letter R)
2. Use Abraham --- the name often used to designate a Jewish man
3. Talk to your rabbi and decide on a name
4, Check with the moyel, look for the bar mitzvah record, etc.
