Subject: Conflicting info in U.S. censuses

Hi all:
I have conflicting information >from three different U.S. censuses.
Any suggestions?

1900 Arrival date for (Joseph) Isaac FINKELSTEIN is 1894 and for Ida
and the kids 1896. They are both listed as Aliens.
1910 Arrival date for him is 1892 and her is 1898. He is listed
as having his Papers.
1920 Arrival date for him is 1898 and her is 1901. He is listed
as having his Papers.
1930 Arrival date for him is 1894 and her is 1897. They are both
listed as Aliens.

1900 and 1930 are the closest match for arrival dates. I have not
been successful in locating any immigration documents yet (
partially because I cannot figure out when they arrived).
Thanks for any suggestions.

NL's response:

Why don't you check the immigration documents for the different years? One
might have thought that the record nearest the events (ie the 1900 Census)
is likely to be the most accurate.

Clearly the 1901 date cannot be right because Ida wouldn't have been
recorded in the 1900 Census if that was the case.

If it was me, I would start (in Isaac's case) with 1894. If you can't find
it there I would broaden the search to the surrounding years. I think that
is all one can do in any such search.

Soldier in Napoleon's Army #lithuania

Eileen Douglas Israel <faithdouglas@...>

Dear LitvakSIGers,

Amazing. When I was researching the family history, I heard >from two
different Nadels, ..did I hear the story of the Italian soldier (one
version) and..did I hear the story of the Spanish soldier (the other
version.) Apparently this soldier deserted >from Napoleon's Army, I can't
remember if it was as the army was on the way to the Russian engagement, or
on the way back. In any case, the details are the same. He was taken in by
our Jewish family, fell in love with one of the daughters, married her and
stayed in Lithuania. Either we are related to the Volpes,..or this happened
to more than one soldier in Napoleon's Army. Eileen Douglas

I would like to echo Irene's plea for funds to continue the translation of
Dr. Smilovitsky's "Holocaust in Belarus". I urge all members of the SIG to
make a donation, small or big (whatever you can afford), so that you, your
children, your grandchildren and those that come after you will be able to
remember what happened to our families during a most tragic period in
history.

Minsk Very Early "Jewish Defense League" -1900's #belarus

Paul & Irene Berman <ikpjb@...>

A family tradition is that my husband's grandfather, his young wife and
children left their home in Minsk in the early 1900's for the US because as
a member of a Jewish self-defense group he was wanted by the Tsar's police.
Part of the story had something to do with the group's defense activities in
the forests outside Minsk.
Does anyone have any information on such a group? Could they have been
called the Birionim ( the tough guys)?
I wish everyone a happy Passover.

Hello,
I have posted 2 items on viewmate for the first time. They are two pages
from a letter that was written by my grandmother in German. The center of
page one bled through to the back and is difficult to read, but I would
appreciate any translation that can be completed. Here are the links to:

Miriam RAVIV/REBIBO-Submitter of Pages of Testimony #general

Lthorpe883@...

Hi All

I am searching for Miriam RAVIV/REBIBO who submitted many Pages of
Testimony for the families of RADZIUSZKANSKY and GRYNBERG >from Sejny,
Poland.

My RADZIUSZKANSKY family changed their name to RADEN and settled in
Glassport, McKeesport, PA, Chicago, Phoenix, etc. The GRYNBERG family
was also in MCKeesport, PA. I assume Ms. RAVIV lives/lived in Israel.
Unfortunately there is no date (that I am able to read) for her
submissions, so perhaps she is not alive.
If anyone is familiar with her or any of her descendants, please
contact me privately at

Thanks in advance for any help.

Gary Gershfield <gmgkpc@...>

I was wondering if anyone has ever contacted the Liquidations Bureau at the
NY State Insurance Department regarding information on defunct
landsmanshaften/burial societies.
I am aware that the NY State Insurance Department forewarded this
information to YIVO.
I would be interested to know if the Liquidations Bureau located
at 123 William St. in Manhattan, would have any records on landsmanshaften
that,perhaps,never got sent to YIVO.

Thank you in advance for sharing any experiences.
