US census questions 1850-2000 #general

Shelly Weiner <shellyjag619@...>

Dear all,
I have found a website that lists all the US census questions asked from
1850-2000. For 1960-2000, instructions are also included. The site
can be found at

I browsed the site and found questions I can't wait to get the answers
to. For example,

(1940): Does this person have a Federal Social Security Number? (Yes or
No)

(1950): Was he living in this same county a year ago? (check box for Yes
or No)

(1960): Did he live in this house on April 1, 1955? (Yes or No)

Sure wish the Census Bureau had asked these questions on earlier forms.
Would have made all our searches a lot easier!

Lodz Ghetto hospital lists #general

lili susser <susserl@...>

Hello to all,

Does anyone know if there are lists of hospital patients in Lodz Ghetto who
were in the hospital during the evacuation (gesperre) in 1942?

My mother was a patient on Lagiewnicka St. at the time and is listed in the
database as deported. However she hid and survived the evacuation. We both
were then transported to Auschwitz during the liquidation in 1944 where she
perished.

Are there any lists of employees of the office of vital statistics where my
father worked in the Ghetto.
I'll appreciate any help. Thank you.

Please reply privately to

Topic: The Grand Duchy of Lithuania Project

When: Sunday, April 16, 2006,

Time: Doors open 12:30pm, Program begins 1pm

Where:
Berkeley-Richmond Jewish Community Center
1414 Walnut Street
Berkeley, CA

Speakers: Sonia and David Hoffman, Founders of the Jewish Family History

80% of today's Jews have ancestors who lived in the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth. The Hoffmans are translating and analyzing thousands of pages
of census-tax records >from the latter half of the 18th century, for the
areas which are now in Lithuania, Belarus and parts of Poland. They will
describe information found in these records about communities (kahals) and
families, and present historical context for these findings. They will
demonstrate how researchers have identified their families in these records,
though they did not yet have surnames. For more information, visit
www.jewishfamilyhistory.org

David B. Hoffman, Ph.D., is the President of the Jewish Family History
Foundation and serves on the Board of the JGSLA. He co-founded and is the
past-president of the LitvakSIG. Sonia Hoffman is President of the JGS Los
Angeles and coordinates the Grand Duchy Project of the Jewish Family History
Foundation. She served as coordinator of the Bialystok Shtetl CO-OP for
JRI-Poland. They have published numerous articles in Avotaynu and Roots-Key,
and have spoken at five IAJGS annual conferences and for many other
societies.

New items on Steve Morse's One-Step Website #general

Diane Jacobs <thegenie@...>

I see that Steve Morse has added several new foreign-alphabet tools to
his one-step website. These are in the "Dealing with Characters in
Foreign Alphabets" section.

The new tools include translating (real translations, not
transliterations) words >from Hebrew to English and vice versa,
transliterating between English and Greek in both directions, and a
virtual keyboard that lets you type any character in any Latin-based
alphabet (example, the slashed L in Polish).

And for the technically-minded, he's uploaded all the pages of "The 8086
Primer" which is a textbook he wrote many years ago. The 8086 is a
microprocessor chip that was used in the first PC, and over the years
has evolved into the Pentium processor used in modern PCs. As many of
you know, Steve was the designer of the 8086. The uploaded 8086 Primer
can be found in the "Miscellaneous" section of his one-step website.

The one-step website is at http://stevemorse.org Please direct any
questions to Steve rather than to me. Steve's address is at the top of
each page of his website.
