Re: Census Undercounts - A correction #general

In my post yesterday, all the periods disappeared after it was sent. The
undercount estimate >from the 1880 U.S. census was 6.4% (6 and 4/10ths%),
NOT 64%.
I still cannot find many of my relatives in the 20th century censuses. I
have searched using first names, ages, etc, and have found some relatives
with some interesting misspellings. One of the stranger ones was for some
Wolfe relatives in San Francisco. In the 1900 census their last name was
written down as Waf. They had been in the States for 15 years at this
point. Does anyone know if census takers were allowed to record information
given by the neighbors of people who were not home.

Re: Commemoration days in Hungary #hungary

Carol J. Robinson <caroljr@...>

Thanks to Gabor Hirsch for sharing the list of Hungarian Holocaust
commemoration information. As a reminder, if you are visiting any H-SIG
towns this summer, it would be helpful if you would photograph any
Holocaust memorials and cemeteries that have not yet been included in
the All Hungary Database. For Holocaust memorials, we need photographs
of the entire memorial, plus photos that include every name. For
cemeteries, we need photos of every stone.

We currently have an active project transcribing a large Budapest
Holocaust memorial. We could always use additional volunteers, so please
contact me at caroljr@... if you are willing to help or if
you have any questions about photographing Holocaust memorials and
cemeteries.

We send our thanks to everyone who replied to our inquery regarding the town
indicated on the Ellis Island Database as Dismoshowa. Even when we enlarged
the original manifest, it was not clear to us what the actual name of the
town might have been. We apparently do not have the experienced eye of some
of our JewishGen researchers to read the handwriting on these documents, but
we are learning.

It was our understanding that the town we were seeking was located near Pest
(1912). Now it appears the town was actually Diznoshorvat in Borsod, about
91 miles >from Pest, and is much closer to Miskolc. In the 1950's, this
town's name was changed to Iznofalva.

We appreciate the help >from all of the H-SIG members who took the time to
reply to our query. The mystery has been solved.

Best Wishes,
