Polish names #general

Annemarie Jutel <jutel@...>

from PolishRoots, I learn that the endings "owicz" means "son of" and
"-ewna" means an unmarried woman.
Two questions:
1) does "-ewena" give me any information about the woman's father's name?
(Judelewena=daughter of Judel?), and
2) what if JRI Poland records "so-and-so ber X-owicz" - is this the son of
the son of X (I am presuming "ber" is, in fact "ben," but please correct me
if you think I err), or the son of X?

Many thanks,

Hello Genners:

Often a genner will happily say that such and such a site is offering this,
that or the other valuable information....and signs off.

It would so helpful , especially for newcomers, if they would include the

details or whatever with no clue to the website's name or location.

Please include the website's URL.

In searching the new Mt. Zion Cemetery database, I find 101 names listed
with the society as "Desfardin". One of them is a Hannah STRICK, who
may be my ggrandmother. I've never before heard the name/word
Desfardin, and Googling it turns up nothing useful, nor does a search of

Has anyone heard of this society? Can anyone help give me any info on

How do we go about getting a guarantor? Our situation is different than
what is outlined in the Ontario Vital Statistics website since these people
left Canada as very young children never to live there again. No, they never
became citizens of the United States, so there are no documents pertaining to
that. Can someone give us some direction to what we should do? Thank you.
I was just looking at this for someone else who posted regarding a death
certificate. According to information >from the Ontario Archives,
http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/interloan/vsfaq.htm#how

if you do not require an official certificate you can obtain the films
either through interlibrary loan or >from films held by the LDS.

Henrietta, b. 1878, married Joseph GIRSDANSKY Girsdansky. They had one daughter,
Barbara, who married, but I don't know the name of her husband or children.

To the best of my knowledge, Edith and Henry lived in New York City.

Obtaining Canadian Birth Certificates dated 1900's / AMCHISLAVSKY etc #general

Lin Mor

Last week a brick wall fell and my cousins and I need help in our mission to
obtain two Canadian birth certificates dated 1909 and 1911. One cousin referred
to the Ontario vital statistics website which states that one needs to have
permission >from the living or prove they are descended >from the person, (with a
copy of their death certificate), whose records are being sought. The site also
requests that a guarantor be a part of the process and the directions and
requirements are written for people who are living in Canada. Our situation is
different and I hope that someone can assist us.

Here is the story of why we need input and help:

My AMCHISLAVSKY grandparents married in Erie PA where grandma's uncle lived and
that original name was on the legal marriage records. They lived in Toronto for
several years before immigrating permanently to the United States in 1913. I
had been unable to find AMCHISLAVSKY in Toronto city directories or the census.
A few years ago before privacy and security were tightened, we tried to obtain
the two birth certificates and the response was that there were no births
registered under that name.

Grandpa became a United States citizen in 1945 using the name ANIS. On his
Certificate of Arrival (1913) he used the name ARONSON, one of several surnames
he used over the years. It stands to reason that it was accepted that this was
the same person.

Last week I was studying the 1911 Canadian Census and plugged the name ARONSON
on a whim. Of course, all of you would have known to try ARONSON long ago, but
it took several years for me to think of that. Anyway, in the Toronto Centre
area was a listing for Sam AARONSON, Fanny AARONSON and their son, Harry, (born
12/25/1909), aged 1. Esther was born in August 1911 after the census was taken,
therefore is not listed. The cousins and I agree it is indeed our grandparents
and uncle, the dates cited and other information matches.

Soon after becoming residents of Allentown, PA, the surname was changed again,
this time to ANIS. All of the paper trail generated in the United States uses
this final name.

My two questions are these:

How do we prove that Sam AARONSON is the same person as Samuel ARONSON and later
Samuel ANIS? Would the United States citizenship papers with the names ARONSON
and ANIS on the various documents be acceptable proof? The other birth,
marriage and death certificates we have for the later links do use the name ANIS.

How do we go about getting a guarantor? Our situation is different than what is

Dear Cousins,

Some time ago I wrote requesting translations of Yiddish letters
written by family members in the late 19th & early 20th centuries. I
had several willing volunteers, but it turned out that my cousin & I
couldn't digitalize them in a way that made them simultaneously large
enough and clear enough to read in an electronic medium. Now I'm
asking again, but this time I'll have to send xerox copies in the
mail. >from what I've been told, the letters are very interesting, and
some quite painful. There are 20 letters in all.
