Musical instruments played in early 19th century Ukraine

M. Chaffey recently asked ..."does anyone have any idea what
sort of instrument a musician would have played in the Ukraine in the late 1800s/early1900s and was it a poor living?" My great-uncle, when he went into the army and joined the band, learned the clarinet on the advice of a friend. He played that for the duration of his time in the army in the early 1900s. I don't think he made a living >from it after he left the army, but it kept him relatively safe while in the army. He also played the mandolin for pleasure. SKAIST in Natzrat Illit, Israel
#general
Shoshana L. Boublil
I may have posted some of this in the past, but I did not get a response
at the time. In the Yad VaShem testimonies I put together the following tree: (>from Bela Zlotkin's Pages of Testimony and >from Israel KRAVITZ's pages of Testimony) 1. Israel SKAIST Hinda 2 Henia SKAIST (1860-1940) m. Getzel EZRACHIENE -- in Ponodel 3. Reizel (Rose/Shoshana) (1886- m. KRAVITZ 4. Bella (1925- dec.) m. ZLOTKIN, lived in Hertzeliya 4. Reuven KRAVITZ (KRAVICIS) (1921-1940) died in WWII 4. Israel KRAVITZ, lived in Natzrat Illit Also, a cousin of Henia (nee SKAIST), Mrs. Rachel (unknown maiden name) m. Yaakov FRAZER and lived in Natzrat Illit. Many years ago, a lady >from this family visited my father and told him that they were related via my great-grandfather. They were descendants of the children of his 1st wife, while we were descendants of the children of this 2nd wife. Recently (thanks to the Rokiskis SIG!!!!) I obtained a listing that appears to be Hinda (nee Cotton)'s data, which places her as living 1843-1929. Unfortunately this complicates things for me, b/c my great-grandfather's children >from his 2nd wife were born after 1870 and if Israel is his son >from his 1st wife, that means he was born approx. 35 years earlier(!). Unless I go back another generation, in which case the dates, at least, work out <g>. To resolve the puzzle, I need to find members of the family >from Natzrat Illit. They have passed away, and people who now live there say the family may have moved to Haifa. Another possibility is the Zlotkin family in Hertzliya. He may have been a taxi driver, but I'm not sure, and I can't find his descendants. I tried the phone books, but wasn't successful. If anyone could help me find them - please contact me. Thank you, Shoshana L. Boublil (nee Skaist) Ramat Gan Israel

Chrzanow records
#galicia
Simon Srebrny <srebrny@...>
Lindy Goodman asked about Chrzanow records.
I visited the Urzad stanu cywilnego there in the 1980s and was shown the only two volumes of Jewish records they had: - one was a book of deaths in the late 1930s and 1940s compiled after the war on the basis of the testimony of survivors. I copied out lots and lots of records. The second was, I believe, marriages for a couple of years in the 1920s. I shall check my notes when I am home next week. Last week I visited the same office again and was told that a bunch of old volumes of Jewish records had JUST BEEN FOUND!!! And by this summer, they should have been restored. PLEASE don't all go and pester them straightaway. The director said she would let me know what is in these volumes and when they become available. Nowadays one will not be allowed to read through the records to search for kin. But one will be able to request copies. The discovery is - possibly - great news for Chrzanower families. I never understood why there was almost no material about our community. The director did not or could not tell me where or how come these volumes suddenly reappeared. Is anybody out there interested in some kind of Chrzanow records project??? I found good materials in Chrzanow and in the Katowice archives last week. Simon Srebrny (currently in his home town of London, but living in Berlin)
