Rabbi Moses Weiskopf of Paris #france

N.Landau@...

Does anyone by any chance recall Rabbi Moses WEISKOPF of Paris who died
in 1936 at the age of 99. (Stephane Toublance - see below - informs me that
he died just before his hundredth birthday)

He was my grandfather's great-uncle.

I told my father recently that he only died in 1936 and he was amazed as his
grandmother had spent some time with him as a child in the 1860's ie 70
years previously at school in Paris.

According to a family-tree on the Internet
http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/images/Images%20Bayern/WEISSKOPF.pdf he was
the father of Joseph Weiskopf who changed his name to Georges GOMBAULT who
was a socialist and journalist, and the grandfather of Charles Gombault who
was Editor of the newspaper France Soir.

I have been contacted by a number of people in response to my post on
JewishGen.

These include Stephane Toublanc:

"Do you know that there is a Biographical Dictionnary for the Rabbis in
France, that will be soon published. It is untertake both with the French
Commission of the Jewish Archives and our National Archives of France. And
of course, there will be a biography for Moïse WEISKOPF, espacialy his
activities as a rabbi in France.
Look at the site of the CFAJ (in French...) http://cfaj.club.fr/index.htm
[nothing for Moïse WEISKOPF, himself, yet]"

I have had another response >from Micheline Gutmann who assisted Rolf Hofmann
in compiling the family-tree that I mention above.

I have found that there is a musician called Jean-Claude Gombault who might
be a son of Charles Gombault. Does anyone know a contact for him?

Thanks for your time

PS I also understand French if you wish to write to me in French.

Help reading and translating marriage record from STRASBOURG, ALSACE #france

Dorothy Kew <dkew@...>

I have recently found the marriage record of my great-grandparents, which
took place in Strasbourg in 1842. I have scanned the document, and although
I can manage to understand the French I am having some trouble reading the
handwriting.

Is there anyone on the List who would be able to help me with this? Please
reply to me off list. I appreciate any help you can give.

problems w/ Yad Vashem database #ukraine

taxtroll@...

I was wondering if someone could help me. I've been trying for weeks to
search the Central Database to finish a summary of records mentioning
Opalin, Ukraine (formerly Poland) but every time I try to search, I'm
directed to a IBM Workplace Service Express window. I e-mailed Yad
Vashem a while ago about the problem but got no response. I just tried
it again and apparently my e-mail address is on a spam black list. I
was wondering if other people are having this same problem with the
search engine or if there's someone >from Yad Vashem on this
distribution list who can look into the problem and get back to me.

Thanks

Jacob Kopyl #belarus

Carol Graham <stukawife@...>

Ok people...i get the point about nicknames, but if
that where the case here why would he show his name as
Jacob Kopyl Frank on official documents. And he always
used all three names. I really do think there has to
be more to this than a nickname. But thanks for the
ideas.

Montifiore's Jerusalem Census #general

amrothman2@...

Hello,

It's been a while since I was on the list and am looking for information
about the Censae that Sir Moses Montifiore took in Jerusalem, I believe
they were taken before 1900. Am wondering if these records are searchable
and if so are they internet searchable?
Where do I access them? Please respond privately.

Thank you

Re: Has Anyone Filled Out FOIA Form G-639, If So Can You Help Me #general

Diane Jacobs <thegenie@...>

Dear Peter,

I can attest to the fact that NARA on Varick & Houston Streets in Manhattan
has the St. Albans lists incuding those for Detroit, MI, Buffalo, NY,
Niagara Falls, NY and possibly a few others. They are cards on microfilm
indexed by name but in many cases they are difficult to read off the
microfilm machines, difficult but not impossible.

Diane Jacobs

I Know that NARA has manifests and border crossing cards that accompany the
St. Albans Index. I found my grandfather there after some difficulty that
had me bouncing through a good many of them, both cards and ships manifests.
What I don't know >from personal experience is whether the NARA Branch in
Manhattan has those films, as I looked at them while visiting the branch
near Boston.

I am interested in the derivation of the surname "JANKELSOHN". The person I

several forms, such as JANKELSON, YANKELSON, IANKELZON.
